I just finished watching the presentation with English subtitles that's been posted on YouTube.

I've gotta say, at first I was a little skeptical, mainly due to the name of the game giving off this sense that this isn't really a direct sequel to the previous two. That, and the fact that the images they were showing were kind of boring without any real context to them.

But now the title makes sense to me, and I'm really excited to see what they can do with this game. The focus is on Lightning, and thus she gets the main billing. Also, this is a new direction for Final Fantasy, as it seems like they are trying out a lot of new ideas (character customization, real-time battles that affect the passage of game time, etc.). Whether it turns into a mish-mash of different ideas with no coherence and no tie to the previous games, or a great experiment on Square Enix's part remains to be seen. But by not calling it XIII-3 they are implying that this is a different experience, one that we may never see again for a console Final Fantasy game, and certainly not in the main series.

I don't know how it'll turn out, it could flop tremendously, but my hopes are high. Plus, I'm excited to actually play as Lightning again!

I enjoyed 13-2 but I don't own a 360/ps3 anymore so unless this comes out for PC or next gen consoles I will likely skip it. I can't see myself buying another console this late in the gen

Pretty sure this has been cancelled.

'Mainline FF game' doesn't mean much these days considering SE experiments with so many different styles. Versus didn't get the numbered sequel treatment. The gameplay mechanics are new, that's not a bad thing, it's good. Didn't the classic FF games of the PS1 era get nearer to 1.5 years than something like 4? What's the measure of a games length in production to it's quality?
Nothing outside of FFXV should scream mainline FF if you're going by your standards (provided it stays in development for 4 years amirite)
Yup, FFXV is the next mainline FF game. That's pretty clear, I hope? A mainline FF game is a game that creates a new world, new characters, new lore. There's a plot that revolves around the world and has you travelling around that world where you eventually meet the antagonist and spoil his plan for destroying/conquering the world. That is what FF titles have always been about the constant evolution keeps it fresh. You could even also say that every mainline FF game has a new engine as that's true too.

As I've already said in this thread, with the announcement of the collection yesterday Square pretty much confirmed that only the original numbered entries are mainline titles and I'm perfectly find with that. The drop of quality between things like FFX and FFX-2 or FFVIII and Dirge of Cerberus is huge so I'd much rather consider these as spin-off designed to purely make money.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

why do people care about versus? What has been shown to garner so much attention?
It's because of the hype it's been gathering up since the reveal of this generation consoles. We got to see a darker side of XIII, and the overall design of the characters looked really promising. Also, the latest trailer looked really good (although the gameplay seemed really rough, but it's in super alpha-stages):

So what then, would you consider the fabled Versus?
Is it a mainline FF game, or it it a terrible quality spin-off purely made for money?

My point is, don't make such a conclusion about this game before you know nothing about it, it's dumb.

Nomura is nobody's bitch.
Feel bad for the heartless.

I'm pretty sure Versus and Type 0 invoke more of the FF atmosphere then XIII has been. They got rid of the Victory fanfare. Who would do that?

At least Type 0 does it when you level up.

Versus IS a spin-off. It's given more time and development resources, sure, but it is a spin-off game. It's not a mainline FF. Just like Type-0 is not a mainline title (now the fact that Versus seems to and Type-0, by all accounts, is better than FFXIII only speaks volumes about Toriyama's 'vision').

And yet you just claimed spin offs to be poor quality compared to their mainline counterparts, and my earlier point was this is a stupid assumption, it's about the game itself, not the budget behind it.
So stop jumping to conclusions about this games possible quality, easy ;p

People at SE have been adamant about both Versus and Type-0 receiving the amount of internal attention that a numbered FF game receives, which is what really matters in terms of the final product.

I never said this game was gonna be crappy. I only stated that it is not a mainline entry, that I won't be buying it day one, that one and a half year dev time makes it questionable how the game will turn out and that as someone who enjoyed FFXIII and FFXIII-2 I am disappointed with this announcement.

I still can't believe they are ditching party members. They did say "end of lightning's story" So I guess its only fair we will get spin off games for Noel, Snow, Hope, Sazh? Who knows wtf SE is thinking these days.

True, they both are getting huge resources. That doesn't change the fact that they're not mainline FF games, but simply not being a mainline FF game doesn't mean that the game is automatically bad or that the mainline FF counterpart is automatically good. If you look at the previous few years than you have FFXII which wasn't all that great, FFXIII which wasn't all that good either and FFXIV which was atrocious as mainline FF games. Now you also have Crisis Core which was brilliant, Dissidia titles which were great and Type-0 which seems to be amazing from what people say.

I'd play a game with Noel. He was actually one of the few cool original characters in FF games since the start of last decade.

You said it. The end of Lightnings story - not necessarily the end of XIIIs story.

Noel is the best character out of this generation in my opinion. Should have fleshed it out with him and had Lightning support him.

That depends entirely on how you define what a mainline game is. If it just means "it has a number," then we'd have to call Birth by Sleep and KH3D spinoffs too of their series as well, which I think a lot of people would disagree with.

SE pretty much cleared this up yesterday, the mainline series is just the numbers, no sequels, no story related action games, no Tactics games, just the main fourteen so far.

As far as I'm concerned all 3 games are mainline as they are FNC mythos games.

But of course I'll have everyone and their brother saying otherwise.

How did they do that? Are you talking about the collection?

Not really, how would you realistically expect them to bundle every FF related game into one package? How many games would that be, and the price?
It's much easier to include only the numbered titles for very obvious reasons outside of which are deemed 'quality' enough

From the very beginning, didn't they say all the FNC games were XIII, not just FF XIII.

Type-0, Versus, XIIIetc, are all XIII...together.

It's a compilation.

All part of a grand package except that they each have different worlds and interpretations.

Having only played and finished FFXIII, i will go on record and say I actually like Lightning. She kept things together, was tough and kind of an ass, but entertaining. Hope and Vanelle were the weak links of that original cast.

But then i enjoy most of the main FF characters. The one exception is probably Vaan. And Cloud i'm indifferent on.

Are you suggest every FF related game is mainline? Then what does mainline even mean to you? How many mainline Final Fantasies which aren't numbered are you suggesting there are?

It's not just the collection either, Dissidia also only recognizes the numbered entries.

This is why the 'mainline' and 'spin off' analogy falls apart, because that would imply that FFXIII is the title of which the standard is set, and a representation of the others, when it's really not the case at all.

True and each franchise does it differently. If Nomura, the series creator says that BBS is KH0 and KH3D is KH2.5 then I'm willing to believe. Just like I believe that Peace Walker really is MGS5 etc.

I stated that in the past spin-offs have been there to make quick-buck and were nowhere near as good as the mainline titles. This is true. It is also true that from what was said Lightning Returns seems to be following this trend.

the 1up preview made me think the battle system is essentially this:

- not fixed ATB cost
- one ATB meter
- overclock clock (upper right)

just the commands are assigned to 4 face buttons now, like TYPE-0

also, apparently they are re-using job/costume system from FFX-2..which is very good.

No, I'm saying that with the introduction of FNC and SE's attempt to do annual FF releases, the 'mainline' numbered distinction isn't the only way for us to measure a game's worth.

The "mainline" designation is meaningless to me, anyway. As I mentioned, what really matters is how much resources and developmental effort went into the game, which reflects the overall quality of the product. Games like Type-0, FF10-2, FF13-2 very clearly received a similar amount of attention to other games in the series, so I consider them peers. Honestly, any other distinction is purely semantic.
