I started this game hyped as hell, but the more I play I feel like this is the first Yakuza game I'm dragging to complete.
First the combat. Judgment 2 completely spoils it for me. It's not fair to compare both I know, but going back to old Yakuza games after playing that game is difficult. This is a step back, clearly. The bare minimum I was expecting was Yakuza 0 combat, considering what they were aiming to do here, but truth is it feels choppier and not near as fluid. The card system is not that interesting and it spoils the combat in my opinion. No taunt mechanic is such a fucking miss.
The narrative starts really good, but when they pull that twist... I wish they hadn't. It feels too familiar and to be honest, if you've been playing the series before you can see it coming from a mile a way. Plus, and that's on me, the new character's names don't help.
I'll finish the game, my passion for the series deserves that, but this is perhaps one of my least favourite Yakuza games.
I'm currently in the final segment and is insanely hard without no reason whatsoever.
EDIT: decided to go back on my decision to binge the ending on YouTube and ended up clearing the Tosa segment again. I'm glad I did, Ryoma's final speech is really strong and well written.
I'm just a little disappointed that Takechi ended up being the final Boss. It really felt like a re-edition of Yakuza 0 and I was expecting something way more different for a final boss (mind you the battle is actually good, but then again is Yakuza 0 all over again).
If you've never beaten Yakuza 0 I think the narrative it's a home run, but if you've played all the previous games, well, it feels different. At least for me it did. Since this is a spin-of some characters should have left their confort zone.
