Wasn't it an Apple II game first?
Yes the C64 version is a straight Apple ][ port, doesn't even use any hardware sprites. Speaking of Karateka. Ariolasoft distributed the game in the UK and did a tape version of it, unfortunately they didn't do a good job taking out the in-game copy protections first which pretty much made the tape version impossible to complete.

I decided to add a Remakes and Other Versions section to the Games Post (which I’ll put up later on today). If you know of any C64 remakes that should be mentioned let me know and I’ll add it.

if you wanna see the ending to your favorite game you could never finish on your own,

project firestart was my favorite (I finished it though :-)) hope somebody will make a remake sometime...

There was a fanmade Project Firestart remake, but it may not be what you’re looking for. It’s 1st person and in 3d, so it lacks the vivid art the C64 version had. Still, it may be worth checking out.

I also finally sat down and played the Amiga version of The Last Ninja and it made me feel very giddy throughout. Good music remixes, pleasant artstyle, and sticks very closely to the original design. Of course you will need an Amiga emulator for that so I recommend UAE or the Window's version, WinUAE. Check out The Last Ninja Remix Longplay Video to see and hear the Amiga version in action.

Ok, the game looked great and was good at the time... but holy crap did I hate these sections, requiring pixel perfect jumping.

Yeah, when I was playing it last night I quickly remembered the countless lives I sunk into trying to cross that damn swamp, but there was a trick to getting across them. For example in the swamp you just hold up each time you jump and you should be able to make it ok. Of course the swamp was nothing compared to how you were supposed to get pass the 2nd stage's boss. That nearly broke me when I was a kid.

The era around TLN I have fond memories of. I was 15 and in UK at the time, June-Sept 87, TLN was just released and for about 4 weeks I went to every gamestore I could find, specialty stores, WH Smith, Boots etc back when they all sold games. Not one shop had the disc version, only tape. I wasnt giving up and then the last week I was there I found it in a quaint little store in Cardiff, Wales. I read those instructions from cover to cover many many times until I flew back home in Australasia. I couldnt get that C64 set up quick enough (I used to share the telly in the lounge back then). I eventually completed the game after a week or two with no help and was, for the time period, one of my greats accomplishments. Mates at school were all stumped and I ended up coming up with a brilliant idea.

I set up the C64 through the video then to the telly. I played the game and recorded the entire game from start to finish and used to lend the tape out to mates. Didnt get it back after the 3rd or 4th person borrowed it, but I didnt care. Screw YouTube, this was 'YouBorrow'. :D

Funny thing was, I lived in Papua New Guinea at that time and in New Guinea there were no copyright laws. Piracy was totally legal, even videoshops used to buy one original video and then duplicate it 10+ times and rent out the dupes. They got lost or damaged, you just paid for a blank tape. Games at school were shared like an STD. Someone always had the latest version of Fast Hack Em, cracked games etc etc. You give some guy on the school bus some blank discs, next day he'd give them back packed with the latest games.

Oh, and who remembers the discs? Single Sided, Single Density, DOuble Density, Double Sided. Always bought the single sided double density and just cut a little square out of the right hand side so we could use the other side. When I eventually sold my C64 in 1989 I had close to around 500 games, although I did have a lot of originals towards the end of my time with the machine because I started to appreciate the boxes, manuals and understood that these programmers put time and effort into their products. Havent been into piracy since.

That's awesome. I too finished the game with no help. The part where you had to touch the stain on the ground for ninja magic and pass the statue with the bow and arrow had me stumped for a very long time. A lot of people talk about being stumped on the dragon on the first stage.. That's nothing compared to the last level puzzle... Jesus.

Yeah, that was the toughest part for me, the dragon on the 1st level, but it taught me that its trial and error with items at hand (or you havent found the item yet). Ive always loved this particular genre, I just get sick of generic puzzles 'do you want to put the square handle in the square hole'? type thing. Plus it feels like games are getting easier now compared to back then, granted, we need game saves though in this day and age for the bigger games, but it seems like most games everything is handed to you.

Still, when you think of what games cost 20yrs ago and what they are today we get pretty good value for money given the time that goes into them.

NOTE: Due to the sheer amount of information provided in the 2nd Post it actually caused it to implode. So to continue on with the updates I had to cut the post in half. All the game reccommendations are in here and everything else can still be found in the 2nd Post.

This is an awesome thread, and for some reason I've missed it until now, so will read through later.

I'm going to try to emulate it with a 'better' Speccy thread though, the other one died of death some time ago.

This thread brings back good memories (Bard's Tale 3 on the C64, MM2/Wiz6 on the mac), and very bad memories (dying literally an inch or two from the ship on the surface in Zillion on the SMS. piece of shit game jewrkjwrelkjfdshkalf)

Unfortunately, while I have Wiz6 on the PC (in like... 3 different archives), I no longer own my mac version (I actually bought that and the guide when it came out in... 91?)

Finding the mac version of Wiz6 online is bloody *impossible*. I can't find it to buy, as abandonware, or anything else. The pc version is easy to find, but that's pretty useless, I have the pc versions from the wizardry archives, and wiz gold, etc, but not the elusive mac version. Bah!

I don't really have a ton of fond gaming memories on the C64 though, around the time I was messing with it, I had access to ridiculously good macs, and they were almost absurdly better than the Apple, PC or C64 games I could play. I am sad I missed out on the Amiga's lifespan though, that system had some amazing games.

Man, the controls in Last Ninja were so bad. I really loved the game, mostly for the scale and atmosphere, but the controls were dreadful. It's little wonder he was the last ninja if that's how they fought! ^_~ The stupid jumping puzzles were bullshit as well.

neat thread... I never even noticed it before though!

in the late 80s and early 90s (I'm showing my age - I can't remember when I was in grade school!) at my primary school we had about 20 C64s in the "computer lab". We had computer class every other week - but what we'd do (after the ridiculous haunted house math game we were obliged to play) is get in a corner and play California games and Winter games and a couple of football (soccer) games.

Did anyone else use Logo?

I think the most advanced thing I learned to do was make coloured blocks - but it was still fun

Man, I even remember writing an essay on it, and it printed out in all caps. :lol I ended up rewriting it on a typewriter.

Some of my favourite games were Artillery Duel, Archon, Mario... man I can't even remember most of the names. There was this text-based RPG that was really awesome. Oh, and I hated Maniac Mansion because it spooked me out (hamster in the microwave!?).

If you end up making it let me know and I'll link to it from here. I never owned a Spectrum but have seen a lot of interesting games for it. Go for it, I would love to see what comes from it.

Playing the game again was a little awkward at first, mostly due to how the turning was handled. If you are facing right you can only turn upright and downright but can't directly turn around. A little strange but workable. Once I got used to it the controls didn't bother me as much. The rock jumping segments are very tricky at first, but like everything else in the game it's a puzzle. Once you know the button combinations you can get past it with no problem.

Anyhow, here are today’s game suggestions. First is the final sequel to Druid called Warlock the Avenger (not to be confused with Warlock Armageddon starring Julian Sands). It basically has the same structure as the first game but with more polish and smoother controls. The other game is Cybernoid, a futuristic shooter that holds up better than most C64 games in both controls and graphics. And last is Zak McKracken, the second adventure game from LucasArts.

Welcome to Turrican!

Today's update will focus on the Turrican games. Inspired by A Black Falcon's tribute thread I decided make this post solely devoted to one of the best C64 action series out there. Word of warning, out of all the games tested in this post the only one I can't seem to get working is the first C64 game. If you can find a way to get it going, let me know.

Also in some unrelated news, Cybernoid is hard as hell! Dear god has anyone here finished this thing?

The original Turrican games on the machine they were originaly developed on, the C64, are the best of the entire series. Turrican 2 being still in my top 10 games of all time. Manfred Trenz is an absolute genius, I can't believe he made the entire NES game himself. The credits are hilarious because it's all one guy! You don't see that anymore these days.

Been working on it since my other post - it's gonna be a belter!

Turrican = One of those few games that despite being buggy as shit, we looked past it and enjoyed it for the phenomenal game it was.

I did....

On the NES version with a Game Genie.

Infinite lives and ammo FTW. Genocide, baby!

Also, there was one place in the game where a single map tile didn't line up with the map next to it, (i.e. there was a tile in a place it shouldn't be.) so if you entered the second screen from a certain point, you would get stuck in the wall. I played that game so much back then I eventually memorized where that place was and avoided it from then on. Still, I enjoyed the game immensely.

Tsk tsk tsk... where's the fun in that. Adding infinite lives and ammo just turns it into a tech demo than an actual game. Regardless the game is balls out hard. I could barely make it through the first level. I'll give it another shot after I play through the Turricans.

Which, by the way, I really like Turrican II. I was only familiar with the SNES versions but was aware of the older ones. Since I was off of work yesterday I decided to make it a Turrican Day. While the first game has its problems, the second one is pretty addicting once you understand how to play it. It's like the bastard child of Contra and Metroid only this one is exceedingly more difficult than those two. I can see why people like it so much.

Also Hurrican and T2002 are really good updates. T2002 is essentially a remake of Turrican II but with new areas and bosses. Hurrican, however, is amazingly fun. It takes a lot of ideas from each game and creates its own identity with it. That one is well worth checking out. T4 Funeral, despite its nice artstyle, is buggy and needs some serious polish. I see a good game in it, but with the unavoidable deaths and a stupidly annoying boss the game is practically broken.

Much love for the C64!

For many our first touch with home computers and along with Amiga a golden era of amazing game music and sadly the best years for crazy game ads and stunning boxart. Now on to my list, some of these have been mentioned already but you all need to play every single game on this list! :D

Yep, simply an amazing game and has only been beaten in the genre by Super Metroid in my opinion, and only just. Wait until you get to the shoot em up sections, they, at the time, were the best shoot em up sections I had ever seen and completely blew me away. I won't spoil what happens, but when the bosses enter, the music starts, and the music accompanies the twin gattling guns a pixel away from your face... Just incredible.

You know I never liked Boulder Dash all that much, but I used to enjoy watching my parents play. They loved it. What I did really like though was Boulder Dash Construction Kit. I spent hours and hours designing the coolest levels for my parents to play through. Some of them I swear were genius. Unfortunately I kept making them too hard for my parents and so instead would make my friends play through them. Great times.

Another game that I didn't really like to play myself, but loved watching my parents play. Was the Mirrorsoft version of Tetris.

The reason was that it had one of the best pieces of music ever to accompany a game, still to this day. It's an amazing electronic piece that goes for around 25 minutes without looping. I'd just sit there and zone out while my parents swore at blocks on the screen. You might be able to listen to the music here on lemon64, but I can't test it at the moment because my java has crashed.

Also, I'm not sure if you guys are aware. But the Play! symphony that toured the world recently (last year) played The Last Ninja level 1 music in Stockholm. Unfortunately for me, they didn't have it on the play list when they came to Sydney. I still enjoyed Akira Yamaoka playing Silent Hill though, so it wasn't all so bad. Here's a clip of Last Ninja at Play! Stockholm. I'm so fucking jealous:

Yep, simply an amazing game and has only been beaten in the genre by Super Metroid in my opinion, and only just. Wait until you get to the shoot em up sections, they, at the time, were the best shoot em up sections I had ever seen and completely blew me away. I won't spoil what happens, but when the bosses enter, the music starts, and the music accompanies the twin gattling guns a pixel away from your face... Just incredible.

You just did.

:(

I'll still push to finish it through to the end. One thing I like about the huge levels is that the further and further you get into it, the more tense and into the moment you become. It really gives you a sense of progression especially when you reach a boss only find out there's much more to the stage past it.

I did end up playing Turrican III. Even though it looked great, they did turn it into a straight foward shooter. Not a bad game, just very different. I think my biggest gripe is that the first two stages are stuck in metal corridors instead of an alien world. I do look foward to playing it through once I get done with the second game.

That's just too awesome. Never thought I'd see the day where The Last Ninja theme would be orchestrasted. I need a CD of that stat!

Tsk tsk tsk... where's the fun in that. Adding infinite lives and ammo just turns it into a tech demo than an actual game. Regardless the game is balls out hard. I could barely make it through the first level. I'll give it another shot after I play through the Turricans.
Well, back then I wasn't as good at games as I am now. I'd love to see it on the VC. I might download it and try to see how well I can do after all this time.

When I first got my C64c it came in a "Powerplay" bundle that came with a NES style pad without start and select and a 3 in 1 cart that contained Rick Dangerous, Microprose Soccer and Stuntcar Racer. I used to play nothing but those three games for months until I got the tape deck and a few, ahem hundreds of games. The great thing about game publishers back then was the price of games, a Taito or Ocean 12 pack cost under $10 and single games were under a $2.

Speaking of Paradroid, here is the development blog of Paradroid Redux. The idea is to take the original, optimize the code, fix all bugs and carefully implement some new ideas (and some of the features from Paradroid 90). Some added features will be different ship layouts, smarter doirds (that tries to flee and recharge if needed), game statistics, raiders and maybe enviromental damage, here is a list of some of the fixes. The game is still in beta.

Beisdes stating the obvious (eg. The Last Ninja) some of my favorite SID music were:

Aliens: The Computer Game
-So atmospheric and creepy. The music which plays during the opening stage really helped build the tension.

Temple of Apshai
-The opening theme was legendary for me when I was a kid. The music that played when the monsters attacked the player creeped the hell out of me.

Mail Order Monsters
-This, Apshai and The Last Ninja, no matter how many years have passed by I can still hum the tunes.

Batman: The Caped Crusader
-Another fantastic use of SID music to create a moody atmosphere

Also I found this while doing some searches for the music. Nothing spetacular but it's been awhile since I've seen some C64 packaging, especially that of Temple of Apshai. Seeing that floppy brought back some nice memories.

HERE'S the video.

After watching this, it becomes very clear (once again) that the C64 is the best videogame system ever! Nothing beats C64 music!

And to contribute something more useful to this thread, I think the term "longplay" was first used by this fantastic German mag:

Alright, another group of suggestions. First is Impossible Mission, probably one of the most well known games for the C64 next to The Last Ninja. Next is the sequel to Cybernoid for the masochists out there. The controls on this one is buggy in CCS64, so you might want to try it out on VICE. Last is Bruce Lee...which is a game about Bruce Lee.

Due to time restraints I'm going to cut back on the game suggestions to about once a week. This will give me more time to polish up other sections of the thread and focus my attention on other things from the C64 era.

ENJOY!

Unless my memory fails me, wasn't Impossible Mission randomized each time you played?

Love this game. The war cry of the green sumo haunts me to this day. Funny how people complain about game length these days, yet this, one of my top three C64 games, takes about 30/45 minutes to beat! Unless you hit the glitch around the middle and have to start over :lol

Did you guys know a lot of Timbaland/Danja produced songs use C64 Sid music in them? Listen to these, you'll hear it:

50 Cent - AO Technology You can hear the sid sound VERY clearly in this!
Britney Spears - Kiss You All Over (unreleased demo)
Nelly Furtardo - Do It Sid starts at 0:18

There's probably other Timbaland related songs with bits of Sid in too, but I mostly only hear the singles. I bet there's bits in Justin Timberlakes album.
Actually the last one isn't his own SID composition. It's stolen from GRG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFD2LKt18m4
A lot of SID music is of really, really high standard. Much higher than your normal poptune of today.

This thread gets better and better!! GREAT STUFF!!

I'm still praying for an XBLA (or even PSN) update to this game!! That would be sweet. I've been salivating since the Prince of Persia remake......

I thought it was cool that he used some Sid music initially, but have you heard his response to the accusation? OMG, what an arrogant prick. He admits it, basically says it's fine because the person who made the original isn't a famous face and because Timbaland is American. Respect for Timbaland -100

I wonder how he found the song though?! It's not even from an actual game.

He probably searched through the HVSC like anyone else can. I have plenty of composers suspect of that, just like Disney knew about obscure anime before anyone else and pillaged it in the 80's and 90's (Lion King being the prime example).
I suspect at some point that the greatness of SID music is going to come to wider public attention.
