LTTP: F-Zero GX

In principle I can understand you, but the problem is, for me at least, that Wipeout at first looks a lot like F-Zero, but when you play, it's... slow, sloppy and boring. I'd so love Wipeout to be nearly as great as GX, I'd buy any PlayStation just for that - no matter what's the price of the console at the given time. Sad thing is: It just isn't :(.

So you've never played Wipeout. Nice.

I've had this game for years, and every time I think I'm finally ready to start getting into it...

...But then I pussy out because it really is the most intense racer I've ever seen. Nintendo does not give this series enough respect.

Having one on the Wii U would be amazing.

Best racing game of all time, and proud to say that I unlocked all the secret stages and most of the secret characters.

F-Zero has to return goddamn it.

Thanks to this thread I decided to give this game another shot and holy fuck! I just fell in love with it. I was able to beat all cups on easy and all on normal except diamond which is what I'm currently working on before going onto expert. I want to unlock all of the extra content in this game but I feel as though I may never be able to, there are some tracks where my priority isn't even winning but just to survive. As long as I have enough points to get 1st at the end of it all I don't give a shit. As for story mode that is going to be a bitch and a half to win, I can't even get past the second fucking mission. Goroh has like infinite boost what the fuck man.

Also what racer do you guys like to use? I was playing as the good old Captain Falcon in the beginning but I took a liking to James McCloud that I don't think I can use anybody else. Are there any tips that you guys have for a relatively new F-zero player?

I really wish you guys could experience F-ZeroGX the way I am experiencing it.....running is true 1080p hi-res, with 9xAA/32xAF graphics on the PC! I literally cannot find my jaw! It is around here somewhere. The game looks TOO good! I am serious. Words cannot describe what I am feeling right now. I have never been blown away by ANY game's graphics the way I am with hi-res F-ZeroGX on PC!!!!!!!!!

*shaking my fucking head*

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Kill me if you must, but I always found this catchy

^ This man has good taste!

I love F-Zero GX and like its music much more than that of X.

The difficulty of this game surely contributed to lower sales figures, but what a feeling of accomplishment when you finally succeed!

I was lucky enough to have an AX machine nearby (Akihabara ^^;) and got those ships that way. It is possible to play AX in any way at all these days, now that the arcade machines have disappeared? Emulation?

I may have already posted in this thread but idk.

F-Zero GX is simply the best racing game ever made...that's all I got.

Oh, one other thing. Did you know that the pilot theme songs make up an entire soundtrack by themselves? Be the 4th person to check out pilot profiles from the main menu and see for yourself.

There is still a japanese AX machine in the amusement park Mirabilandia, located near Ravenna, Italy.

I go there every summer with my friends only to play it.

This so much

I wish this game had come out a little later on the Wii, simply so Nintendo could observe the play time data and be able to more accurately gauge what a slow and steady following it built up over time despite the initial abysmal sales.

I would like for the next f-zero to be revealed at e3 to be more on the X side.
The game was limited by the hardware but it has a strange and raw feeling to it graphically, like you were in a place really far and some kind of isolation (hello metroid fans), especially in time trial, of course.
You lose that on gx with still some great ambient races and control wise too, there is something a bit more heavy in f-zero x that is so satisfying.

Hope you've enjoyed it man. You're not getting another one.

:(

WipEout did a great job at filling the void this gen, but it would be far better to have both.

maybe you could upload some screens? :)

If you guys like anime(yeah, I know) then all of you should check out Redline. It's basically F-Zero

Redline is awesome and so is F-zero I can kind of see the relation in that it's fuck crazy awesome races and yes people should watch it, but besides that there isn't much more in common. I was thinking of watching the F-zero anime just to see if it can satisfy my need to see mind-fuck inducing races but I don't think it will. :(

Not having skills to unlock 100% of the AX stuff is one of my greatest gaming failures, even knowing that this the "insane japanese bullet hell" of the racing games

So you've never played Wipeout. Nice.

I have indeed played several Wipeouts, the last one being the Vita one (which I even reviewed favourably, I just personally think it doesn't hold a candle against GX). Of course I hadn't played that one on my posting you quoted, but I've played Wipeout HD, Wipeout 64, Wipeout XL and Wipeout Fusion before that. I totally love futuristic (arcade style) racing and I love speed, I would not give up on one of the few franchises in this genre without playing it thoroughly. What lets you think I had not played any Wipeouts?

The game certainly isn't slow on the highest speed setting. Wipeout and FZ are both good, I dunno why so many people seem to hate Wipeout for no reason ITT.

I'm not exactly an expert seeing that I've only played one game in both franchises but I enjoy F-Zero more because it just feels more fun, and I think that I don't know the tracks feel less claustrophobic.

They hate on WipEout so they can piss you off.

On topic, Shotgun Kiss was probably my favorite song on this game. The James McCloud theme also kicked ass.

the bolded is a complete lie. this game has rubberbanding that is very bad (not on the level of the original F-Zero but it is really bad. opponents catching up at boosting speed in lap 1? come the fuck on). it isn't in every track though but some tracks like the first big blue and phantom road are big offenders.
Sorry but only the first lap may seem hard, the game has no rubberbanding, it plays fair. Try the Master Cup, you can get minutes ahead of the second place and even if you crash they won't catch up magically.

If the game is hard, you only need to get better that's the only reason it is hard; that's why I approve GX completely :P

Fantastic racing game and probably my favorite of all time but I'll say this:

Story mode was unnecessarily difficult. Rage-inducing at times.

I don't feel that at all, playing this game now. It just feels like a good racing game that is rather empty due to the hardware limitations, and I really prefer the more detailed surroundings in GX.

Exactly. Story mode may actually have rubberbanding, but not in the normal Grand Prix. There are some tracks where I am easily 10 or more seconds ahead because I mastered them.

Wipeout isn't slow in absolute terms, but it is slow considering it is a high speed game, especially for Hd which definitely could be way faster considering the beast of a hardware it's running on.

I have F-Zero GX and it is a cool game, but it seems you don't really get WipEout.

What do you mean when you say I don't get Wipeout? What is there to get?

You say it is slow and sloppy, the higher levels of WipEout are very fast and require a lot of precision, as the tracks are pretty narrow. What seems sloppy to you is the ships having some weight to them and physics that make them interesting to master. For instance, with the first two WipEout games, the air brakes turn your ship without steering, you use this to turn the ship before a bend, to take the bend faster, you have to do this some time in advance, which makes the handling more interesting.

I was disappointed when the airbrakes in the later versions worked more like in F-Zero; adding extra steering during a turn. I also don't like the barrel-rolls and side-shifting of the later versions as they make it seem less realistic.

F-Zero has unrealistic handling as the ships don't seem to have any weight to them, the handling is much more direct. This is okay as the style is very arcade and the presentation is wonderfully arcade as well. The tracks are very wide, so the speed can be higher without requiring too much steering precision. You still need fast reflexes for the tight turns.

WipEout 2048 has wider tracks and added speed, but it has so much track detail and effects that it becomes too chaotic IMO.

F-Zero needs to be on the 3DS BTW, the 3D effect would look great.

I quickly ripped it to check out how it looks on dolphin, I took one pic but I can't run the game with the same amount of AA than what he's using, massive lag if I try. It's my 'Xenoblade' Dolphin I'm using so I didn't try to change many settings. Sorry if this doesn't do the game's justice.

Realistic? How do you measure it? As far as I know there are no such gliders and we know nothing about how they work, nor do we know what depends on the input of a driver and what is controlled by the machine. Regardless of that, realism is not what I value as a positive. I call it sloppy because the game feels imprecise and gives me less control over my ship. Of course it cann still be controlled, but even on absolute pros you can see that the game controls less direct.

Wipeout (especially before 2048, which imo is the best Wipeout I know, but even then that's still true) is way slower than F-Zero because its controls would not allow for such a high speed. Which is what I'm criticising.

I would also love a new F-Zero based on Hedgehog Engine - provided they get it to run at a constant 60 fps on Wii U, I don't like that Unleashed and Generations are only 30 fps :(.

What build and settings do you use? I tried it on 228 and the latest revision but they both run really slow. Dunno why it's so laggy, I had no problems running Sonic Colors, Xenoblade or Skyward Sword on this PC.

Realistic? How do you measure it? As far as I know there are no such gliders and we know nothing about how they work, nor do we know what depends on the input of a driver and what is controlled by the machine.

To me inertia is more realistic than no inertia, the G forces would be insane. Airbrakes turning the ship seems convincing enough (though them not steering the ship probably not :^) Barrel-rolls giving you a boost make no sense to me, side shifts could be possible, but they still feel like cheating.

Regardless of that, realism is not what I value as a positive.

To me it fits the style of WipEout, they explain how the whole anti-gravity racing developed, the 2048 intro also shows that. It is also why I like Burnout 2, for instance, the mostly realistic setting and physics combined with the insane idea of causing accidents with the highest cost possible is what makes it fun.

I call it sloppy because the game feels imprecise and gives me less control over my ship. Of course it cann still be controlled, but even on absolute pros you can see that the game controls less direct.

This is not correct though, once you master the controls you can steer very precisely and it feels like a real achievement. Especially with a neGcon controller, there is one bend in 2097 in a completely dark tunnel (you can't see anything) where I can lock the neGcon in one position and take the turn perfectly, it is an awesome experience. You have to steer very precisely at the highest speeds or you will note win the race.

It certainly controls less direct, most people hate the game at first because they bounce around the track like a pinball. Mastering the controls is part of what makes it rewarding, like overcoming an unwieldy beast.

Wipeout (especially before 2048, which imo is the best Wipeout I know, but even then that's still true) is way slower than F-Zero because its controls would not allow for such a high speed. Which is what I'm criticising.

Looking at youtube movies of GX and 2048 the difference isn't really that big. 2048 tracks are still narrower and controls are indeed less direct (though 2048 has a ship class that turns more directly now, which I find less exciting to play).

I would also love a new F-Zero based on Hedgehog Engine - provided they get it to run at a constant 60 fps on Wii U, I don't like that Unleashed and Generations are only 30 fps :(.

Apparently F-Zero GX didn't sell very well, I still want new versions though. I don't think WipEout is a massive seller, but it still gets new versions.

I've seen a real life AX machine, but it was busted unfortunately. I have a force-feedback wheel for my Gamecube which works with GX, just like the arcade version.

Each iteration of Wipeout this generation (Pure, Pulse, HD, and 2048) have played drastically different from one another. Wipeout HD is the most technical and focuses more on racing technique than the thrill of racing; rather than being an anti-gravity racing game, it feels like an anti-gravity racing simulation. Pure was the first game in the Wipeout series to introduce barrel rolls and side-shifts, and as the series focused more on the technical side of racing and lost its "drifty" feel, fans of the earlier games were disappointed. 2048 returns the franchise to its roots with longer, wider tracks (heh) and focuses less on eeking rolls off bumps in the road. I'd say the F-Zero series retained the same feel across each iteration while Wipeout tried to offer a different experience with each game. WOHD is the least comparable to F-Zero GX while Pure and perhaps 2048 are better comparisons. WOHD is my all-time favorite racing game, but I like both WOHD and F-Zero GX for different reasons, and I like them both a lot.
And I'm great at both of them =P

Probably one out of like three games in my possession I haven't finished. (Excluding Harvest Moon and such)
I beat all the story chapters on lowest difficulty, but I don't even have the AX cup.
When I went back to it a couple of years ago, I at least beat the chapter with the street gang on the highest difficulty, which makes it the third (I believe) which I beat completely.

what's your build mayng? i tried it sometime last year and it worked pretty well, but the latest builds just run like crap for some reason.
