Lucas is a stubborn prick

Does George Lucas realise the amount of money he would make on releasing the un-douchey cgi infected star wars orginals on HD?

He would make a billion dollars in 3 months. People would go insane. I dont need to see an extended alien mtv video in jabbas palace.

Smack some sense into his wallet, TatooineGaf!

Toss me to the Sarlacc if old.

Not much considering he doesn't own Star Wars anymore or Lucasfilm

Which is why it's also no longer his fault

I was just talking about this with my son yesterday. I actually respect the fact that he won't do it, even if the CGI is really fucking bad at times. Christ, watching Han walk on Jabba's tail gets worse every time I see it, but hey, good on him for sticking to his guns.

edit: lol didn't realize he didn't have the rights to the original films anymore. let's go Disney!

isn't the issue that the necessary reels of the original untainted don't exist to even convert them to HD?

Regardless, Disney should just use that one version of the films from fans online as a close second.

Do you realize he donated most of the money he got from Disney to charity? Guy doesn't want money for himself.

Besides, I'm sure the majority of current Star Wars fans don't care. Just an old and loud minority of uberfans.

George Lucas funded a 3D cartoon show that looked better than every other one in the medium's history, a show that was making a total of $0 in profits, because he cared about having a good star wars show. Literally while they were writing the show they were thinking of ways to reuse environments and George laughed.George Lucas sincerely doesn't need money, he's set for life.

Pretty sure it's up to Disney not Lucas, and they would make all the money.

And while I would like this too I don't see it happening at least until they feel they have burst the Star Wars bubble, they have always been one of those Nintendo like company's that use limited time offers and small production runs to inflate demand for their biggest properties.

I'd be ok with unedited version, with the exception of keeping in Victory Celebration instead of Yub Nub.

20th Century Fox still holds the distribution rights to the Original and Prequel trilogies. Disney isn't going to be doing anything anytime soon.

Ya know, now that this has me thinking, I hope Disney doesn't do it, even if the Star Wars bubble bursts. It would be disrespectful and an insult to Lucas. I'd like to think Disney has more class than that.

My guess is that Disney will make their own despecialized editions and get theatrical releases after the new trilogy is finished.

it's not up to him anymore, thank god

disney will release it next year for the 40th anniversary because it's easy money

It's not even the new edits that bothers me. It's the fact that most of the CG additions were from the 90's and have aged terribly.
Still would like a release of the unaltered version, but they didn't even bother making the CG in the Special Editions not look like hot trash.

Yub nub fucking sucks, and is a horrible way to end a movie, much less a trilogy. Say what you will, victory celebration was a way better ending.

Pretty much everything else was better in the originals.
It's the best part of Jedi after they leave Tatooine, and the alternative has Gungans in it and shows that the Galactic Empire's tyranny didn't affect Coruscant in any noticeable way.

This isn't really up for debate.

No, the Ewoks are a horrible way to end a trilogy. Changing the song doesn't make the scene any better. Why the fuck would Lando and the X-Wing pilots land on the moon to party with some stupid backwoods native race? God I hate the Ewoks SO MUCH. I'd rather have yub nub and not see Hayden's stupid mug and dumb Naboo. The trade-off isn't even close to worth it.

Nope, just the originals. Lucas retained distribution rights to the prequels. Disney gets the distribution rights to Empire back in 2020 and Jedi in 2021, but Fox owns the distribution rights to the original film forever, unless they sell the rights to Disney.

lmao seriously?

that's freaking hilarious. How the hell do these contracts keep being made where studios can't fucking buy everything.

Marvel, Star Wars, whatever.

Existing contracts don't magically vanish when one of the two parties is acquired.

The other problem is that while Fox holds the license to distribute Stars Wars Episodes 1-3, 5, and 6 only until 2020, they hold the license to distribute Episode 4 in perpetuity.

So unless Disney is planning on releasing a set with Episodes 1-3, 5, and 6 only they will need to negotiate with Fox to reacquire the rights to distribute 4. I have a hunch that Fox will not be willing to part with 4, which means Disney has to license 4 from Fox someday.

Fox and Disney have had a warming relationship recently though. I think Fox will eventually come around to the fact that they can make more money with the X-Men involved in the MCU, although how making standalone X-Men films outside of the MCU will work could become pretty hairy if that ever happened.

Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up.

None of these things you guys complained about existed in the 1997 version.

Yes, I believe this is the most likely outcome, as well. Especially since there are some pretty impressive unlicensed hack remaster versions of the Original Trilogy out there in the ether, it's kind of silly for them not to make a tidy profit from those people who would just as soon stream or buy a legal product that is more convenient to acquire than the filthy, infected pirate stuff, anyway.

I'm actually kind of surprised Disney didn't re-release these in theaters leading up to 7. Would have made a shit load of parents bringing their kids to get caught up for 7.

I wish they had just blown Coruscant up in The Force Awakens, what the fuck is the 'Hosnian' system and why did seeing billlions and billions of people die become a 5-second non-event in that movie? Did they even understand why blowing Alderaan up in the original film needed so much building up and also denouement to create emotional impact?

Well the song is worse too

I agree but I don't think they wanted people cheering when the planets blew up

I've come to accept that the original versions may never ever come out, but at the same time Disney's running things now, so who knows. I also have have the Despecialized Editions, so I'm not too fussed right now.

An ideal Star Wars set for me would be the theatrical versions of the OT remastered, plus an "updated" version that has effects updates, but without the Lucas additions (e.g. lightsabers effects fixes).

What might be a huge roadblock to a new set next year for the 40th anniversary is that A New Hope's home video rights are tied to 20th Century Fox.

Well this is dumb.

Pretty sure he makes $0 on Star Wars sales now. Too lazy to check though.

He's one of Disney's largest shareholders (if not the single largest) so technically he does.

It's entirely possible (and likely) that Lucas may have signed a contract stipulating that I-VI are set in stone and are not to be tampered with.
