Major Nelson: "We Are Listening!"

So just in case they scrap all their shitty policies, what does that mean for EA? Will they stop supporting the Xbox1 just like the Wii U. And if Sony does the same, will they support any console at all??? LoL!

No, they aren't that stupid.

The inevitable digital console future is coming, the industry will get their no used games always online console someday. It just depends on when consumers will accept it.

Honestly, what can they do?

If the system does require every game to be installed on the HDD in order to do that fast switching between The Price is Right and your game; not using some kind of CD-Key authentication will lead to rampant cases of people just lending a game to someone else or buying and then returning the disc while keeping it on their HDD.

They could make it so that you must install the game, but it requires the disc to boot (like PC games did before Steam).

But you can install your games to the HDD on the 360... This isn't anything new.

The biggest problem is that most of their primary markets need drastic internet infrastructure changes to really see this digital future as a reality.

It's possible that in the next decade or so we might see things improve enough for it to be a reality, but it sure as hell wont be in this generation and possibly not the next.

If they were truly listening the Xbox one wouldn't have gone past the conceptual stage.

The problem is they are marketing it as a lifestyle device for everyone, and at that it works to some degree...it would of made more sense for them to focus on gaming then roll out a TV that focus' on their own programming.

It's the same as the PS4, they don't require the install for fast switching - they require it because Blu Ray read speeds are too slow. Both consoles have the same mandatory 'install while playing' function.

But that doesn't get them a cut from retail though. A more sensible option is "oh you have the physical disk - well if you pay us £10 we'll give you a discounted digital license. So you don't need the disk in the machine to play the game."

And where did you get that from that tweet? This is more damage control to keep fans calm and the bashing to a minimum.
Indeed. If they wanted to put the issue to bed they'd actually fucking say something straight up, rather than waste time telling people they're listening to them.

And with Kinect, they'll always be listening.

I'm sure they are listening.....

....to EA and other publishers.

If they reversed their position on this, they would get this news out right away. You don't wait to spread good news, especially after the beating they took over this.

I am thinking they finally figured out a way to spin this to make it sound like this is a good thing.

yup. simple way would be 'we are not doing it folks! no strings attached. everything is like it has been this gen'. and bam. done.

instead we have this

we are listening.

They gave answers. Too much of them, and it is a mess because of it.
Why do you think Sony looks so clean right now? Exactly, because they did not talk about that topic.

I'm curious to see the details. Most likely to laugh at whatever "concessions" they're making, but I'm willing to hear what they have to say.

I never considered those self-contradicting, vague comments as 'answers'. =X

Listening doesn't mean changing their mind. It just means there's a very vocal group of people expressing their dissatisfaction and hoping they don't go through with it.

Change will occur if they think the sales they will lose from the demo that is complaining vocally will hurt them. If they think Sony plans to roll out the same thing too, then they can listen but the higher ups are going to still say no.
