So Biandudi stopped at a McDonald’s in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Sunday afternoon. She noticed it was nearly empty inside, save for a middle-aged man who had just gotten his order and was walking over to the condiments.
When the man saw there were no plastic straws, however, he got upset — and began walking back to the counter to berate a cashier, according to Biandudi.
“She told him that it’s the law now that they’re not supposed to have the straws in the lobby,” Biandudi told The Washington Post in a phone interview Wednesday. “He said there’s no such law.”
(The St. Petersburg City Council voted last month to ban plastic straws by 2020, beginning with a grace period in 2019 in which customers must specifically request plastic straws at city businesses.)
Biandudi watched as an insult-ridden, profanity-laced argument about straws escalated between the customer, a tall white man, and the employee, a young black woman. That’s when she pulled out her phone.

In her video, the man can be seen leaning across the counter and grabbing the McDonald’s cashier until she lurches forward. For a moment, the employee seems to stumble, then regains her balance and begins flinging punches at the man.
Other people can be heard shouting “Let her go” and “Stop!” After about 15 seconds, another McDonald’s employee walks around the end of the counter and pulls the customer back until he lets go of the woman.
The employee continues shouting as she is escorted away by a co-worker, while a man in a McDonald’s uniform steps up to the counter and addresses the belligerent customer. Moments after the altercation, the employee returns to the counter area to look for her phone.
The customer points at her and shouts, ostensibly to someone he thinks is a manager, “Sir, I want her a-- fired!”
This prompts the woman to retort, “No, you’re going to jail!” The man then screams more profanities at her.
At last, a McDonald’s employee tells the customer: “Sir, get outta here.”

...the belligerent customer was verbally accosting the manager — a part of the incident she didn’t capture on camera, she said.
“He came back in the store and went behind the counter and got in the manager’s face,” Biandudi said. “And another employee, a bigger guy, he actually grabbed the guy and put him outside the door and locked the door.”

Later Sunday evening, police arrested Daniel Willis Taylor, a transient man who had just turned 40 the day before the incident, according to an arrest affidavit from the St. Petersburg Police Department. There were no weapons found on him and there were indications he was under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Taylor was charged with two counts of simple battery, and ordered to stay away from the McDonald’s restaurant and avoid contact with the employee. He is currently awaiting trial in the Pinellas County Jail, records show.
Arrest records also indicate there was further violence not captured on video.
“The victim was kicked in the stomach by the defendant, and was complaining of pain,” police stated in an affidavit. “The defendant was being escorted out of the business by management due to him battering another employee, and causing a disturbance. The defendant kicked the victim in the stomach while she was standing near the exit door.”

Pretty good form on the first few strikes before she switched to hammerfists. She throws with ill intent, I dig it. If her co-worker didn’t restrain her I think the drunk guy was going lights out.

Pro Tip: don’t be the guy in this vid. Don’t go around grabbing and tugging strangers aggressively.

Im gonna assume she lost her job, but fuck that guy.

Edit:

It’s crazy the guy wasn’t thrown out immediately.

It also looks like this escalated from an extended verbal confrontation that someone (manager or supervisor) should have stepped in to de-esscalate before it happened.

As always, in a confrontation, the person that escalates it from verbal into physical is the instigator. The blame lies with them.

However, there is absolutely nothing to celebrate or admire in that video.

There's a lot to celebrate.
A woman defending herself from an attacker is a fantastic thing. What a spirit she has.

The male workers who didn't help her should be ashamed.

I’m sorry dude but if you grab someone and pull them across a counter, you’re fair game.

She is fine. I’m glad she defended herself. No issue whatsoever. She was attacked.

You grab someone, you’ve crossed a line.

You try to pull someone across a counter, you’ve put them in danger. Game On.

Violence is not to be admired and celebrated.
There's no real-world context that justifies such a mentality.

Understand that I'm referring to those celebrating the violence in the video, not the people in the video.

Violence is not admirable.
What is admirable is being bigger and knowing how to walk away with your dignity intact.

Endorsement of violence is endorsement of violence.
You can try and spin it as much as you like but you're still endorsing violence.

How could she walk away, he had a kung fu grip on her shirt and was trying to throw her across a counter. He never let go. She had nowhere to turn to.

In nature you eat the bear or the bear eats you. This woman doesn’t stand around waiting to be saved or waiting to die. She protected herself. No one was stepping in to help her anyway.

You’re wrong on this.

If she wasn’t being held by this guy I’d see your point but she had nowhere to go. She literally couldn’t walk away. No reasonable person could just let someone toss them around freely with no resistance.

Was she supposed to let this guy rag doll her?

Edit

I’d say the same for anyone. If anyone has anyone else in imminent danger the victim should absolutely fight to survive.

He is lucky, some people working fast food live for the day they can take out their frustration on a customer who goes too far. You see "Reggie" is fresh out the pen and loves to fight. Had "Reggie" been there that day it might have been a different story.

You’re wrong on this.
Please read my edited comment.

Note also that I haven't specified any one individual in my criticism - but others have made a leap of logic when rushing in to celebrate the violence on display.
The zeal to advocate and celebrate violence has eclipsed the ability to pay attention to the details.

There are definitely some vids out there of customers trying something like this and it going much worse for the customer than it did for this guy.

thats fucked up.

on topic, i went to a McDonald's the other day and now you order with a computer screen and pay with a credit card. there wasn't even a need for a cashier.

we truly living in the future

Weird video. They should have stepped in better though because things could have escalated fast, you never know. But at the same time they value their jobs.

I honestly don’t understand what else she was supposed to do. Her freedom of movement was taken from her as she was aggressively yanked toward a larger man by a grip on her shirt that the man refuses to relinquish. In that moment you don’t know what this guy is capable of. Is he gonna bite her? Spit on her? Claw at her face or strike her with the free hand that isn’t death clenched on her shirt? Is she supposed to just wait and see what’s gonna happen?

Clearly no one else was stepping in to help de-escalate the situation (which I find odd, honestly). This is my biggest issue in the vid. There has to be a way to get this guy off her without losing your job. Best way would have been for a cooler head to step between them before it turned physical to begin with.

But it turned physical, and then it’s either let this strange drunk man throw me around like a rag doll or fight for my safety. When he let go finally they separated and it was over.

There are videos of much worse outcomes for crazy customers in fast food places.

Lol that guy is a moron.
Especially considering he doubled-down and attacked her again on the way out...

“The defendant was being escorted out of the business by management due to him battering another employee, and causing a disturbance. The defendant kicked the victim in the stomach while she was standing near the exit door.”

Dude tried to take another shot at her while walking out of the door. Hope it's worth the jail time bud.

It's self defense. The corporation should see it that way, hopefully.

I pointed out the error, you keep ignoring it on your repeated efforts to endorse violence.
The term is apt.
Problem is, defending yourself from someone who's putting your life and physical health in immediate danger is not the same as what you are referring to as "violence". If someone rear ends your car and sends you careening toward a pole, you swerve to dodge the poll.

I honestly shouldn't even have to post this, and I feel like you are partially trolling or being intentionally combative.

Sorry, but I admire the way she defended herself against somone almost twice her size, instead of becoming more of a victim. If she doesn't start swinging who knows what happens.

Imagine if she was a lone attendant at a gas station or some small shop and this guys pulls the same stunt. It could have literally been a life or death situation.

So yeah, I do admire the violence on display, good for her.

It's remarkable that, even though I've pointed it out multiple times, people still seem unable to halt their endorsement of violence to actually pay attention to specifics.

Shoot first, ask questions later.
What can possibly go wrong?

I have a little sister and if any man grabbed her like that you better believe I would hope she would knock his ass out or have someone knock him out. Im not condoning violence im stating facts that if you grab someone like that then you better expect to catch some fists as retaliation. If someone were to grab me like that and if they were bigger than me and pulled me towards them I would be terrified im gonna get stabbed or punched etc. She reacted normally and the extra punches after she was being restrained were just "I cant believe this MFer" Bonus Punches.

And to make this worse... She was fired!

Edited: I was fed false information saying she was a high school kid. She's 20 saving for college to become an RN.

He was arrested with simple battery... She lost her job for DEFENDING herself...

And the manager just served dude like the girl was in the wrong?!

Where's the Justice here?

Unfortunately it seems like companies tend to always fire the employee in cases involving any physical contact even if it’s jusfified. That guy from Walgreens who stopped the armed robber a few weeks ago was fired, for example.

Probably something to do with trying to avoid frivolous lawsuits.

Sucks but just seems like that’s how it works.

And yeah, it really bugs me how people didn’t intervene immediately and the guy wasn’t booted out right away.

Did she for real lose her job?
Hope some employer sees this and gives her a shot.

That guy deserved a beating. What are we against violence when someone comes after you first?

He fucking grabbed her shirt, that’s assault. She was 100% self defense here.

I’m honestly surprised none of the other employees attacked this guy. He better have gotten arrested after this.

I threw people out of my Blockbuster immediately for less back in the day. I'm surprised it took them so long.

If she was fired she should sue. Clearly self defence.

Edit: Paid leave makes more sense. She should have some time off after an incident like that anyway and it's good to front her some pay for taking that shit from a customer.

Really wanted to see that guy hit the floor.

She won't lose her job. A little paid chill time maybe. The video is straight-cut proof of self defense and she could have them all in a court if they play games.
