Mario Kart 8 Deluxe confirmed 1080p60 1-2 local players, 1080p30 3-4 local players

I think your math is wrong. I'm too lazy to do diagonal length math, so let's just use logic.

Suppose 1 player @ 1080p compared to 4 players @ 1080p. The 4 players each get 1/4 the screen area AND 1/4 the pixels. So pixels/area == (pixels/4) / (area/4). Same PPI or whatever metric you want to use. There's no way you can cut the pixels in half and expect the same or more PPI.

I compared the ppi of one player with 1080p (singleplayer) to the dpi of one player with 720p ( 4player multiplayer).
So by logic it the first case would be: pixels / area
the second: (pixels / 2) / (area / 4)

I didnt think about the cpu load like garett hawke suggested, so that could be the reason why they went with 1080p/30

No, then you're asking for EACH player to have an INDIVIDUAL resolution of 720p, not 720p for the whole screen split across ALL players. Do you see the difference?

Ah yep, thanks. I corrected my calculation. But imo my point still stands, the loss in ppi isnt that high compared to single player.

Most of my Mario Kart sessions are in 3-4 player mode. It's getting annoying that they can't nail down 60fps there, just because the game feels so damn good with that level of smoothness.

1080p, bye-bye to the 59fps frame dupe glitch, full range RGB and local two-player anywhere are more than enough incentives for me to splash out on this game again. Can't wait.

For those who played 3-4 players local on Wii-U, how does Mario Kart 8 play in 30fps? Is it still responsive gameplay wise?

When everyone has their own Switch it'll be nice to have 2 players on the TV and everyone else on handheld in the same room, and everyone gets 60fps. I think I'd much rather do that then 3-4 on the TV at 30fps. But maybe it's fine?

It's playable, and the controls feel fine, but the drop is very noticeable. I hate it.

Good to see that the 59fps issue is gone. I'm actually okay with the native 1080p image but I'll mostly be doing 1-2 player 1080p so the game will be in 60fps.

Time to sell my Wii U copy!

Shoot, I was hoping for 720p60 in 4 player. Me and my friend racked up 400+ hours of play exclusively in 4 player. But it feels so much better in 2p and 1p, would've been nice having that feeling in 4player.

So why 1080p/30 instead of 720p/60 ? This doesnt make sense imo. The pixel density goes down by the factor 2 but the display size per player gets down by 4. So there is no big loss in pixel density for a player. (unless my math is false)
55 inch 1Player 1080p = 40,05 ppi
55 inch 4Players 720p = 32.64 ppi per player

Still not quite.

1 player @ 1080p = 1920x1080 over 55" = 40.05 PPI.
4 players @ 1080p = (1920/2) x (1080/2) over (55/2)" = 40.05 PPI.

This makes sense because like we established, 1/4 the screen and 1/4 the pixels total means same PPI.

1 player @ 720p = 1280x720 over 55" = 26.7 PPI.
4 players @ 720p = (1280/2) x (720/2) over (55/2)" = 26.7 PPI.

Same principle. So 4 players @ 720p is a (40.05-26.7)/40.05 = 33% decrease in PPI. Whether or not you think that's high or relevant is up to you, but don't get your math wrong :).

would 4 players with 60 fps and dynamic hd resolution would have worked? How can we be so sure that Switch's hardware is fully taken advantage of.. Especially if its supposed to be 4-5x as powerful as the Wii U?

All that we know is that the resolution increase from 720p to 1080p was confirmed for docked mode, which is a 2.25x power increase.. But there's still a bit room more.

Though since this is a wii u game, it likely can't be 100% optimized on the switch.
