Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Smash Direct was actually advertised beforehand and livestreamed.

Plus it aired like a month ago.

Online yes, but I don't think those numbers represent overall popularity for these reasons

-Smash direct has been out for longer
-Covered 3DS version too
-Hardcore online fanbase primary viewers
-Was arguably a better, more concise direct

-MK8 sells a lot to casuals outside the internet who don't watch wacky 40 min directs
-MK usually has long legs as views and sales increase over long periods
-MK8 direct came out of nowhere without notice[/QUOTE]

You guys are right, especially the bolded.

No, the one bolded part was wrong. The direct was directly aimed at casual players, as opposed to Smash.

I couldn't find this info in the OP elsewhere but does anyone how playing online with friends is handled? I know there's private lobbies but I was hoping there's a way to party up with friends and then play with randoms. Or at the very least a non-painful way to get all my friends in the same lobby with random players.

I meant there's a large majority of people that will buy it who don't watch directs. You average consumer type who makes purchases based on tv ads, short trailers or recommendations.

Only that there is none.

I believe this would cause some score drops once the reviews are out in some websites. I still can't believe Nintendo didn't include this feature precisely when Iwata was talking about using the Gamepad features at full from now on on it's games. Maybe time constraints were the cause...

Or performance constraints.

Just like in MKWii/MK7, one of you guys join a random Worldwide/Regional room, and then other friends join him via the Friends option.

As much as I'm looking forward to Mario Kart 8, I'm so disappointed at the lack of modes in the game. I mean, is it so hard to come up with some interesting/fun non-racing diversions besides balloon battle? That was one of the things I loved most about Sonic Racing Transformed - there were several different types of gameplay that were just as fun as racing. Traffic, boost, drift challenges, etc. Hell, the game even had bosses (they were not super well designed, but still fun).

I get that Mario Kart has been mostly about the racing (although for my friends and me, we played battle mode more than racing most of the time tbh), but I don't see why they don't experiment with different gameplay types. They did this somewhat in MK DS with the mission mode, but they haven't really brought that back in full swing since then.

I'm hoping they've implemented basic matchmaking like this because it would be a joke if not, since I've played a free-to-play game that has a similar feature.

Yeah, you're definitely on point there. Sonic Racing Transformed had a GREAT, DIVERSE campaign.

It's a shame because while I love Mario Kart, it could be sooooooo much more if they put in more effort or at least had more time. I have a feeling they kind of ran out of time (lack of modes, lack of arenas for battle mode, etc) which is unfortunate.

You might just be playing Mario Kart for the wrong reason.

Is there really a "right" reason to be playing Mario Kart? I enjoy the racing, but there could still be more to it than that. I blame SRT for making me feel this way. :P
Don't get me wrong. Extra features and modes is always a great thing for any game, but when you're strapped on time, it just doesn't happen.

Disappointing for some, but I'll still be enjoying the game regardless.

Oh I'll still be enjoying the game for sure. First time I've been really excited for a new MK game in a long time actually. I just wish it had more, but.. to be fair, I say that about most games. :P

Ok but me and a friend playing split screen could play in an online tournament ?.

Yes.

It's got GP, time trial, and VS (race & battle); right? As well as online play for 1-2 players. That seems like all of the modes they've ever had? Except the coin-based modes in MK7, I guess.

I think the battle mode on tracks could actually be a nice change, personally - at any rate, I think it's been blown way out of proportion by the internet. I guess no one will know for sure until we play the game ourselves.

MKDS had mission mode, MKWii had online special competitions (which were basically the same thing, just time-limited). Battle mode since MKDD featured more modes than just standard balloon battle, and while they cut that back in MKDS, there were at least two rulesets in each. Battle Arenas are a notable loss of content, since every game in the series had introduced some new ones up to this point.

There's actually a lot missing if you look at how much the series had added until they started cutting features in MK7. MK8 looks like more in comparison, but it's still missing a fair bit of stuff. I don't think they skimped on the important stuff (like the actual courses, and those end up being the real star of the game), but it's fair to say that it's missing a lot.

Hopefully the game is tight and excellent in the areas where they weren't strapped for time.

Anyone who watches a nintendo direct is far from the stereotypical 'casual.' Anyone who watches them is a pretty hardcore nintendo fan to be willing to put up with 40 minutes of information on one game alone. Sure, there are varying degrees of the 'hardcore nintendo fan' spectrum, and the presentation was geared toward the more 'casual' side of that spectrum, but they're still hardcore nintendo fans.

Average soccer mom + kids who will buy a wii u for mario kart did NOT watch that direct, nor do they know nintendo direct is a thing.

You can't play cups online, unless you're setting up a tournament that way.

This has probably been answered, but if I set up a tournament online, and wanted to race a "cup" with say three online friends, but then fill out the rest of the field of 12 with CPU drivers, could that be done?

I'm assuming yes.

Just set up a private tournament lobby and invite the three friends into it with CPUs turned on.

The tracks as battle arenas is disappointing, but in MK64 we did sometimes stop racing and just turned a section of the map into a battleground for shits and giggles, especially Royal Raceway and (funnily enough) Yoshi's Valley. So dunno, it might actually work out as something people did anyway.

But I might also be biased because I feel there hasn't been a good battle mode since 64. They've all been so meh for me since then.

Of course, there's always the chance they release battle arenas as DLC. Never say never these days.

Good score. I still think it's a bit early though; I hope they gave the game enough time. Didn't they skip the online mode or something?

Servers werent up for them to try online. They had to publish their magazine, before they could.

Apparently they dont usually give high scores, and that the highest score they've given out is a 97(from what i read).

They concluded with saying that this is the best fun racer currently available, so thats good. I believe a 90% gets a platinum award.

I think the lack of arenas will be the most common negative with reviewers. This can be rectified with DLC. It doesnt bother me, though.

Cool. A 9/10 without even trying online is absolutely respectable.

I don't want to say that DLC should be used to "improve" the game because it should be great and complete from the get-go. That said, I kind of hope Nintendo prepped the game for DLC so that they could get some feedback and develop compelling content to keep the game fresh and fun for years.

And yeah, if it's discovered that something about MK8 is "lacking" then post-release content could certainly complete the package for certain people.

I'm interested to see how things turn out for MK8 in the long run.

I'm expecting at least sustain in terms of exploit patches and bugfixes. You can't do online competitive games without patching them anymore, because it's like a thousand monkeys that are complete assholes typing at once, they find the exploits that you can never catch with a test program.

I'm on a semi-blackout, only letting little details about the game reveal themselves to me.

That said, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of preview content. I know we're only a little over three weeks to release but man, I guess there's already a lot that people have seen.

So many gameplay and analysis videos.

I can hold off, honestly. Those of you who are watching all of the stuff, I hope it's getting you even more excited. I personally just want to go in somewhat fresh.

Glorious Piranha Plant trick.

Thanks, that makes sense. Missed that video.

EDIT: Related question; the easy/medium/hard settings; do we know how that equates to the general difficulty of AI in single player grand prix races?

I think the standard AI in single player is medium. You can't change those setting unless you're in VS mode.
