It says while in a room(lobby).
This video does confirm we can select any course, while playing with friends(can only choose from three random, with strangers).
They should make a commercial where a baby is in the back seat of a car, and a mom is driving to the grocery store or something. And then the world around them starts turning into Mario-themed stuff. and then like, the car they're in turns into a kart! And then the Mom turns into Peach! Peach is a girl. And then the baby turns into Baby Peach! It turns out the baby was a girl too, huh. And then the groceries turn into bannas! And then an announcer says "Mario Kart Wii," even though they're in a kart from Double Dash and even though a 7 appears in the logo on screen. And then he says "Only for 2DS. You heard me."
This is strange... I'm the only one that noticed "1st" disappear before they got to the finish line? it was gone for like a second between camera switches.
What could it be? a bug?able to turn off the HUD
Good catch. Must be a HUD option. Maybe you have the option for your place to appear on-screen for a moment, when your position changes?
edit: nm, should of watched all the gameplay, and not the end. As stated below, seems to do something with crossing the finish line.

I believe it's an expansion of MK7's system where once you crossed the finish line, your position disappeared for a short moment until your console was sure of your actual position (by comparing your finish time with other players). In MK8 they push it further by hiding the position when the player approaches the line.
In MKWii often you'd end up at a position different from the one you saw while crossing the line due to lag.

Probably some sort of release event at the store. The whole "flip your world upside down" thing is just a cutesy phrase to connect with the anti-grav element of the game; I doubt the Nintendo World Store would ever be the one to drop a significant bombshell concerning an upcoming game. But we'll see.

Between this and the possibility of getting Crazy 8 in 4th as seen on the Mount Wario video, it makes me laugh to see people call MKWii unbalanced item-wise on the other thread.
I thin your best bet is wait to mk8 OT and wait for the google docs with id's? Thats what im doing.

Warning, characters handling gets severely affected, when upside down. This is due to Cranky's beard covering his eye's.
I have no idea what we've seen so far lol I think I already recorded Battle in Toad Harbour, Yoshi Valley and Moo Moo so far.

Yoshi Valley, Moo Moo, and sherbert, have been shown in the drivers perspective. More of moo moo and yoshi would still be nice. Is toads turnpike any fun?

Also, do you know if you can switch characters/vehicles in between online races? It was pretty annoying to have to exit out of an online matchmaking group just because I wanted to change characters/vehicles.
I see no problem with that. So you are trying to say only last place should get those items?
People in 4th need items too to catch first. Having 1st to 4th fight helps 5th to 8th catch up. I see no issue with this. If 4th or whatever never got items then 1st would never be caught since he only has to fight with 2nd and if 2nd is not even close 1st is as good as gone.
Mkwii was a broken mess.

yes, that's the point of items that make you invincible.
For comparison purposes, in 12-player races Star was only available from 8 to 12 in MKWii. Now you're in 4th and you get a Crazy 8.

I would like to see a video featuring the retro Pipe Kart (Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart 7) if it's in the game. Also Yoshi's Valley.
