Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

For new page :P

Don't know how Nabbit could drive one handed with items needing to be held in hand, lmao. They'd probably ditch the sack for Mario Kart. Similar situation with Goomba and Fuzzy with them being handless. It may have worked in baseball for Goomba, but I think it would be a bit too odd in kart, heh.

There so many types of bundles for this game it's crazy. Look for the bundle that has the cure for cancer being announced tomorrow!

Rejoice, Guys :)

EDGE final score from Mario Kart 8: ---- 9!!

from the EDGE content thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=815074

I don't think Edge is anything special at all but they tend to give lower scores more often than other places so it's cool to see the game off to a good start but you can pretty much tell how good the game is by all the videos.

I'm glad they have kept the craziness but at the same time, have made a concerted effort in balancing the very unstable franchise.

Anyone else disappointed that there is no Gamepad + TV splitscreen? It's great that the game runs at 60fps in standard two player split screen after MKWii, but I was really looking forward to having my own screen in multi. It's such a great feature on Wii U for stuff like CoD and it's disappointing that Nintendo isn't supporting it. I would have at least liked the option even if there would be a dip in resolution or framerate.

Anyway can May 30th just get here already?

Question about the promotion and the WiiU. If I register my game on my fake Nintendo Club account (I live in Sweden) and use the digital code I get on a second UK based account/user on my WiiU, will my main, Swedish account be able to access that game? Like you do on the Ps3/4 with one US and one EU account?

They probably tried it and it wasn't ideal performance-wise and they are picky about that so it didn't fit their vision for the game.

The option, like you mentioned, would be welcome for a lot of people but if the framerate got all messy, Nintendo wouldn't be able to live with themselves.

I wish it was there but oh well.

This game really needs DLC, I'm super excited for it, but I just don't like the new roster additions and the lack of staple Mario Kart characters. Maybe they'll announced something at E3.

Also MK7 & MK8 have the exact same score from EDGE which is really strange.

Yeah, MK7's score is strange.

Are you sure Sweden is eligible for the offer? Nintendo UK website only mentions United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, South Africa, or Russia.

Nope, Sweden is not but I could use Borderlinx or something for a UK adress and do a workaround for a Nintendo club membership. But Im not sure if the WiiU works the same way as the PS4, where you can have one US account and one EU on the same machine and no matter wich account you buy a game on, you can access it from both accounts.

Absolutely. This are the type of games you already know it would have top quality content and lot's of fun. But every other new mechanic/addition into it is totally crucial to keep this franchise relevant and fresh and obviously MK8 brings more than that. Yet, there's still lot's of people who decide their game purchases based on reviews, especially on EDGE reviews so it's nice to see MK8 getting an excellent score there.

Still 3 weeks left... :'(

.
CVG picked out a few quotes, starting with the following:
“Even 2011′s effervescent 3DS outing, Mario Kart 7, feels somewhat lifeless by comparison. The new HD visuals are gorgeous, but Nintendo has also built on 7′s neatly interlaced mechanics and introduced a nuanced handling model to create the greatest Mario Kart yet.”
EDGE had some criticism for Mario Kart 8′s Balloon Battle mode’s arenas, but the publication still said that the game “is as essential a purchase as Super Mario 3D World.”
“The Mario Kart series’ battle arenas were designed to funnel players into each other, but now you’ll spend long stretches of time without even catching sight of a potential target as you trek round the circuit.”
“But even this isn’t enough to detract from an otherwise-joyous follow-up to the series’ excellent 3DS outing. That it offers as much of its own innovation again speaks volumes; Mario Kart 8 is as essential a purchase as Super Mario 3D World.”

I hope we get an update/patch so we can have an option to put the map on the tv screen instead off or as well as the gamepad. And on the gamepad when playing off tv.

This is a somewhat big deal for me.

I guess I am spoiled from Mario Kart 7 seeing where the other racers are/what they have.

It's a pretty huge convenience for tactics.

I played almost all the Mario Karts but for some reason, it seems like this feature would be essential or greatly enhance the games but looking back, did any of the older console games have anything like it???

I think I kinda understand now why they don't put a small transparent map on the main screen:

With anti-gravity, the maps don't make any fucking sense in this game :lol

Just a random question.
Did they confirm that all those characters that they showed are all there is to is for this MK?
No secrets or leaks ? LOL

Some EDGE review snippets for those interested. Changed slightly in case I'm not supposed to copy verbatim.

It's going to be difficult to return to previous Mario Karts after this...Nintendo has built on 7's neatly interlaced mechanics and nuanced handling model to create the greatest Mario Kart yet

On Drift / Spin Boost:
While 7's drift was immediate....8's will see you likely to sail off the track the first few trys. Fear not. You'll soon get used to it. Deeply and rewarding system. Spin boost more controversial addition. Far from a balance ruining disaster. Must be strung together with other techniques in your repertoire to be effective.

Controls
Options increased. D-Pad control. Handle throttle and break via right analog stick if that's your fancy. Motion controls well implemented. Gamepad feels slightly less responsive due to its weight

Tracks
Retains 7's liking for alternate routes. Anti-Grav has done for Kart what Galaxy's rejection of gravity did for Mario. Spectacularly imaginative track designs are the result. Great updates of old circuits. If MK7's re-interpretations made old circuits feel planar, MK8's makes them feel positively one dimensional. Some tracks offer branching routes. Choice between tarmac and anti-grav. Toad's Turnpike still wide but most tracks relatively tight and frantic

MKTV
Highlight reel can be sped up / slowed down with sticks. You can tweak settings to make it focus on different things, like items, drifting or hits. Can choose which drivers to focus on. Can choose 30, 45 or 60 second clips or play out entire race. Algorithms driving MKTV are amazing pieces of wizardry with keen eye for drama. Example: Camera focuses on banana skin held by Mario. Once thrown, camera sticks with the dropped peel as Mario disappears from frame, cuts to Peach pulling into focus as she runs into it. Highlights can be saved, watched in a theatre accessed from main menu. You can also view friends' clips from here as well as most recent or most popular globally. Progressive approach to internet. When create a tournament, associated MiiVerse community is automatically created so you can stay in touch during the tourney.

Local Multi
No noticeable drop in quality or framerate for 2 player split screen. Wii U starts to wheeze a little in 4 player local splitscreen. Not unplayable but neither is it particularly stable. Decision to drop battle arenas is a confusing one. This is their main criticism of the game really. Tracks don't work as well. Spend long stretches encountering nobody.

Visuals
MK8 takes things even further than 3D World for Wii U visuals. So much detail. DK fur glistens after being in water. Dat mustache movement. Dose shiny chrome bumpers. Crowds gather at side of tracks. Throw coins on track. Driver reactions are great and entertaining to watch.

Conclusion
Joyous follow up to MK7. As essential as 3D World if you have a Wii U. Unsure as to whether it will provide a significant sales uptick. Shows promise for Nintendo's online / community asperations - beyond MiiVerse with Youtube uploads. Whatever happens, MK8 is a hugely powerful argument for Nintendo's idiosyncratic design sensibilities.

“Wii U starts to wheeze a little in 4 player local splitscreen. Not unplayable but neither is it particularly stable.”

inb4 framerate analysis reveals it's actually rock solid 30fps

I would love more impressions of 4-player multi. I have no idea what "the Wii U starts to wheeze a little" means or what "stable" means. It's locked at 30fps, right? Do the visuals take a significant hit? And what is it like in comparison to MK Wii's 4-player mode? The same? Improved?

It looks perfectly playable from videos and even the visuals look good.

I can't tell exactly but the framerate is obviously worse but it doesn't look all over the place to me.

Nice new details.

In MKWii splitscreen, CPU-demanding elements were removed such as the giant TVs on DK's Snowbord Cross / GCN Waluigi Stadium, and other elements were altered like the Piranha Plants on GCN Waluigi Stadium that stay static instead of moving their mouth. Numerous effects were also removed such as the boost effect (white lines around the screen while doing a wheelie or any other speed boost).

Here's a vid of MK8 4P splitscreen
I can still see the big TVs, the helicopter, the boost effects, even the freaking drift tire marks are on the road. The ONLY difference I notice is that there's no “motion blur” effect during boosts.

Wait. Creating a Tournament = creating a Miiverse community just for it?

...User-made Miiverse groups plan, is that you, more or less? O__O

I thought it would be a good idea to record a simple clip of the Mushroom cup showing a lap of each track with good ol' Mario.

Mushroom Cup - 150cc

Requests are being taken care of :P
Shout out to ohohdave for recording and editing.

Already happens with Wii Fit U, so don't see why not. :)

...Ah. Still, great to see such a thing again in MK8. I want more games giving users the possibility to create Miiverse communities.

I'd love to get an "User original" page of Miiverse, where users can create their communities quite freely (with sub-cathegories, like Gaming and Off-Topic), but this is a start.
