Media Create Sales 11/19 - 11/25 2007

Console sales? I never mentioned games, it's much less of a price difference there anyway.
Well they were talking about games. Surely you can't compare the situation of SB on Wii and PS2 with the situation of Wii hardware vs PS3 hardware?

Except one is a casual game and not "buy an expensive console to play the latest version" game.
Famitsu PS2 hardware from weeks of games' launches... though really this isn't nearly as helpful as I'd hoped, due to the wildly varying circumstances and times of year having their own effects.

Gran Turismo 3, week of 2001-04-22: Unfortunately hard to say, as it's two weeks combined to make 148,320. Doesn't seem much up from the 66Ks and 72K of the previous three weeks.

Hot Shots Golf 3, week of 2001-07-23: 103,263. This is actually down from 156K the previous week, when FFX released.

Hot Shots Golf 4, week of 2003-11-24: 94,328

Gran Turismo 4, week of 2004-12-27: 196,480

I can probably do them on Thursday nights, since I'm usually updating the Media-Create spredsheet at the same time anyways.
That would be good. Since in the last few weeks I've started putting the new Famitsu software info in my database, I've been using your version of the names for most of the new games. Until they're available I temporarily stick in the awful Babelfished results, leading to things like these...
21. God 2 Metropolitan Police case file software
22. DANJONEKUSUPURORA covenant door
23. ANATAWOYURUSANAI

EDIT: Though I do sort of enjoy "Armored Cavalry Bottoms" more than "Soukou Kihei Votoms".

Ive always wondered. How do publishers make any money when they only sell like a few thousand copies of a game? OR are they losing money on it?

Publishers sell to retailers, so what sells to the consumer is not an accurate picture of what the publisher has earned from the title. Also, sometimes we don't see titles that sell below the top 30 and guess they don't sell anymore but that isn't entirely true. I'm always surprised by how much a title actually sold compared ot its first week. Some of them do lose moeny ofcourse, or they make money but a waste of time for the development resources. I think a lot of the Trainer DS games have a very low budget though, below the 100k dollars.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
By the looks of it only really prominent franchises like DQ/RE/FF will do well on Wii third-party wise, everything else is bombing horribly. It's sort of like PSP in that regard, at least in Japan.

P.S. Awesome Layton sales.

where is the ps3 version?

Maybe it's coming out a few weeks later, like Oblivion?

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 version outsold the ps3 one, because that's excatly what happened with Oblivion in Japan (360 owners like Western games, even in Japan confirmed?). Yeah, different release dates and stuff, apples and oranges, etc...

I doubt it would day and date. What the Hell is with Ubisoft releasing it on 360 first?

Then again, Tony Hawk, another western game sold better on ps3 according to that list.

Agreed. But I also remember that the DS before Brain Training was somehow similar. Maybe it is just an impression, but the first games that came out on DS outside Nintendogs and Jump Superstars (this last is comparable with Dragon Quest Swords) sold less then expected and many bombed horribly (Yoshi's Touch and Go, Another Code, Pac Pix, Harvest Moon DS, Egg Monster Heroes, Kirby's Canvas Curse, Naruto 3, Bomberman DS, SD Gundam, Pachi-Slot, Naruto RPG 2,.....).
And remember that at first, even Nintendogs and Brain Training sold very slowly, but they sold for years.

I'm not trying to say that Wii is DS or bullshits like that: just noticed some similarities and I wonder if Wii Fit could really be the "Brain Training" of the Wii. Maybe at first it will not sell much (not millions), but its lastability is what really matters at the end.

The PS2 version of Sengoku Basara costs 4,900 Yen on Amazon (the MSRP is 5,500). While you have to pay 8,500 Yen for the Wii game. Thats quite a difference for one and the same game. The Wii versions price is actually on par with Wii Fit.

Holy shit. They really are charging for the original, and the expansion, separately. Yet bundling them together. Odd...

Nobody listens to the price argument (at least not when considering Wii vs. PS3 sales. :\)

Not sure how it is in Japan, but here in the US, a $10 difference is quite a bit smaller than a $30-$40 difference.

Mmm, if I'm not mistaken this is Wii 52nd week on the market so.... JoshuaJSlone, can you do a comparison between top10 best selling 3rd party games on PS2, PS3 and Wii for their first year? I saw one at 2ch but I don't really trust charts coming from someone I don't know.

its not a $30-$40 difference, some 3rd party seller @ Amazon marked up price of the Wii version, and besides its just an excuse cause the PS2 version of other games also easily outsold the Wii version

On the Assasin's Creed matter, the PS3 version will be released on January, the 31th. Yes, the same day as DMC4 and Disgaea 3.
http://www.ubisoft.co.jp/assassinscreed/ps3/index.html

Btw, some might remember similar case with Call of Duty 4 (being scheduled for PS3 and not for X360). Well, not anymore, both versions will be released on 12/27.

I have updated my list with such news:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8379282&postcount=454

11/29 was crazy...but 12/6 looks even better, we should push MC in a NPD way to force them to give us numbers for top30 or something (scratch that, push Famitsu for top50).

Assassins Creed PS3 version will die and serves Ubisoft right.

As for COD4, hardly matters in Japan. The sales will suck no matter what console it's released on.

Famitsu being a week behind MC, the data I've got online only goes through 51 weeks. However, for purposes of a list here I can add in the early Famitsu data; only Umbrella Chronicles should be different.

Total PS2 software through week 52
Total PS3 software through week 52
Total Wii software through week 51

Comparing PS3/Wii and PS2 by a specific week count will always be a bit wonky. PS3/Wii got a holiday season first by basically launching into it, but PS2 got the first holiday season with a multi-million userbase stocked up. If we redo this comparison 10 weeks down the line, PS3/Wii will have grown a lot more than PS2. Also, some of the PS3/Wii games should be higher now, but we won't know how much they've grown until the yearly top 100/500. BUT, as things stand for now...

PS2 top 10 third party releases through week 52
1. Onimusha (Capcom) 737K
2. Ridge Racer V (Namco) 612K
3. Gekikuukan Pro Baseball: At the End of the Century 1999 (Square) 482K
4. Tekken Tag Tournament (Namco) 457K
5. Kessen (Koei) 363K
6. Dead or Alive 2 (Tecmo) 341K
7. The Bouncer (Square) 325K
8. Mobile Suit Gundam (Bandai) 314K
9. Power Pro Baseball 7 (Konami) 314K
10. Dynasty Warriors 2 (Koei) 302K

Sony software wasn't exactly lighting up the charts. Their highest game was... Fantavision at 17th place, with 173K sold.

PS3 top 10 third party releases through week 52
1. Dynasty Warriors Gundam (Bandai Namco) 278K

Awwww, poor Pangya 2.
As someone that enjoyed Pangya 1 quite a bit despite its rather ho-hum quality and strange artstyle I mourn these first-day numbers. 3K is a bit... meh.

I'm guessing it's the curse of the first game (Burn me once, shame on me,...).
On the other hand, there are only so many golf games you can sell to the market in any given timeframe, regardless of quality.

JoshuaJSlone, thanks for the 3rd party comparison. I may not like what I see, but it's awesome to have that comparison.

Just commenting on Wii Naruto first day..didn't the games do much better on GC?

Oh and the numbers for Basara Heroes..wow..I think developers need to get smart and release the Wii game earlier or either not make a Ps2 version.

Innotech said:
they want people to buy it?

You are exactly right. If they release them together people will buy the Ps3 version instead of the 360 version. This is exactly what has happened to Basara Heroes on Ps2 and Wii.

Well as the current generation's console leader by a wide margin, the PS2 is what it will be compared to.

of course, that's not quite fair given that the ps2 was the successor to the ps1, while the wii is the successor to the gamecube. comparing second year sales will be more interesting, as everyone (ie: publishers) have had a bit of time to survey the new landscape.

i do think occasionally (thankfully) quality games sell better than shite, and the third party wii situation isn't smellin' of roses quite yet.

i also think that it's overly optimistic to think that wii game sales in the first few years are going to match what the ps2 did given the target markets involved, but the first year comparison is bad on several levels.

CrisKre

Even though its true that comparisons could be drawn between wii and ps2 first 52 weeks for 1st party games, it is also disingenious not to draw some parallels with DS. Id even venture to say it may be even more logical to do a wii--->ds 3rd party comparison at this point. If you do that, then the next 12 months would be very telling as to wheter or not wii can mimic the success story that is DS within development houses other than nintendo.

Your right, the Wii didn't have a chance of getting the big third party games initially. The only thing Nintendo could do is innovate and expand there gaming audiance and hope for the best. They succeeded and now they can talk with third parties. Would have been hard to do so if they didn't have the sales to back it up.
