Media Create Sales 8/27 - 9/2 2007

Does anyone know if Nintendo will release any game at all for DS in December? Looking at past year's December charts, every game in the top 10 gets 100k+ sales. I really doubt Nintendo will pass up on these sales.

Seeing Wii sales dampen down a bit is a bit discouraging, but on the upside the Xbox 360 is now selling less than 2,000. When's the last time that happened? If the trend continues, it may cause to Japanese publishers reconsider putting their games on the platform. Cheer up.
God, I hate you.

DS Crossword and Advance Wars 2 DS are both on the "late 2007/early 2008 but no info available and no specific date". DS Novel as well, but that's dated in Japan now.

Famicom Wars is a bit declined in Japan, so I could see Europe/NA getting it first. I'm not sure about DS Crossword because I really have no idea how popular crosswords are in Japan and obviously from a localization/content point of view you basically need to remake the game for each region.

It will take some crazy OMGWTH hype to be able to do that - and it has to be a non-game as well that hardcores will also want to buy.

So yeah, might as well start looking for UFOs if you want to see that happening.

Nintendogs is a combination of four versions. The two version combination of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl should, and if you include the third version, it should handily beat out a combined Nintendogs.

Well I'n hoping they do because it's always fun to watch the sales ceiling get higher and higher.

New Super Mario Bros. Been out for less time, but has a lot of catching up to do. Nintendogs is spread among many SKUs, so maybe the comparison is unfair as some people have bought more than one, but we don't know just how many.

But then there's Pokemon.

Yeah a lot of those won't make it to 2007, just stuck with "Winter 2007" which probably means until April.

Ratchet and Clank 1 sold 500,000. The others sold less than 300,000. The PSP game sold 66,000. Ratchet and Clank Future will not make a huge difference for the PS3 in Japan.

Devil May Cry sold 570,000. Devil May Cry 2 sold 450,000. Devil May Cry sold less than 300,000. Devil May Cry 4 will not make a huge difference for the PS3 in Japan.

Neither God of War nor God of War 2 sold over 300,000 in Japan. Neither did Rygar. I realize Heavenly Sword is slightly different, but these are fairly comparable games. The three closest games (although they are still fairly different) to Heavenly Sword on the PS3 so far are Ninja Gaiden Sigma, which sold 68,000 despite launching with no competition on the platform, Genji which did 53,000, and Gundam Musou which despite two huge licences did only 275,000--a massive decline from all of the recent consoles editions of both licences.

None of the PS3 Time Crisis games broke 300k in Japan.

I'll give you Metal Gear Solid because it will likely break 500k. The two PS2 games sold 800k each. It's highly unlikely the franchise will experience growth in Japan because of the PS3's price (preventing the game from driving hardware) and the small userbase (preventing the hardware from driving the game)

I won't argue about The Eye of Judgment or Warhawk because there's really nothing at all to compare them to, but I sincerely disagree that they will drive the PS3. I feel Warhawk is very western-centric and I do not expect it to do well in Japan. The Eye might do well, but I don't really think so.

Why don't you write a letter to Sony asking if they could please cease production of that thing they call "PS3" ?

First party games. The DS has an awesome future right now, almost entirely due to third parties. While first parties jumpstarted it it really seems Nintendo's studios are focusing more on the Wii now. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as obviously it was the PS1 strategy as well.

They did make enough money to at least fund some 3rd party developers with some big projects like ASH while internal teams had to focus their efforts on the first wave of Wii games, instead they decided to go the cheap route with games like Kurukin and theta.

I don't see anything wrong it it just because the Wii needs more damn games. The DS easily has one of the best future game lineups ever and good stuff keeps getting announced every single day. The Wii on the other hand needs more variety and more games to push the market until 3rd parties wake up and start pumping stuff on Wii.

As for the "low 3rd party budgets" I really blame the DS specs. If the DS had specs like the Dreamcast and had much larger cartridge size you will be massive budget games. They don't look so massive just because the 3D isn't the best, and we haven't seen any big budget 2D games.

Is there a smear campaign against WII in Japan?

I just checked amazon.co.jp and not only is it available, it's ranked 88th. Now of course amazon.co.jp is no barometer of potential success, but considering much better ranking and constant unavailabilty on amazon.com, I find it very strange.

Izzy, haven't we learned about Amazon by now? Do we really want to unleash that vale of tears? Also you don't need to capitalize it, it's not a Sony product.

To be completely realistic (no sarcasm here), I think the reason why is because supply finallly caught up to demand in Japan. This, combined with the traditional lull before the holiday storm with a weak 3rd party lineup meant that this was going to happen.

I could imagine that once the holiday season ramps up it will be the same as always, but I hope that this will be a barometer for Nintendo fans to tell them that the next gen battle is still raging. There is no need to be complacent because the war has just begun.

Complacency/Dilligence on the part of Nintendo fans shouldn't affect much more than GAF's total post count.

How much Nintendo fans defend a game is directly proportional to how well it ends up doing. Everyone knows that.

Advance Wars DS megabombed. Like, less than 50k. I'm sure Moor Angol's site (japan-gamecharts.com) has the actual number. Both the GBA ones faired rather poorly in Japan as well, but I think part of that could be due to the fact that one of the GBC ones released like a week before one of the GBA ones.

At this point it's pretty much impossible for Nintendo to announce a mega-seller for November or December; so they have two options--either leave things open to give DQ4 and FF4 room to breathe, or fire off the B-level titles they're working on.

Izzy said:
What was the first week shipment number for Dirge of Cerberus - does anyone know?

Moor Angol has it selling 365k in its first week--Media Create has it selling 392k. So the shipment would have had to have been 400k or higher... and no one posted first week numbers in the week before that's thread.

Sinobi has early reports of it at 93% sellthrough selling 420k which puts first week shipment at around 450k.

Wow that's really surprising, after all this work they ain't going to capitalize on the holiday sales, very odd.

Were you people in a coma during the first year of the DS? It was the worst lineup of software ever. We had the launch and then tech demos like Yoshi Touch & Go. And then... nothing. Until finally Meteos and Kirby Canvas Curse came out that following June. PSP had more games on the market at one point for fuck sake, despite being released like 5 months later. The DS didn't start rolling until that August when Nintendogs (which blows) and Advance Wars DS came out. And then finally software arrived that holiday season.

The exact same thing is happening to the Wii. We had our launch. We had Super Paper Mario. Then we had nothing. Until Metroid Prime 3, and now we're finally over the hump and into the holiday season.

It was the exact same thing with the Xbox 360, they had Oblivion, a little GRAW and nothing. Until Saints Row kicked off their first holiday season. This is not a new problem consoles go through. THEY ALL DO.

TBQH if you look at what they released over 2007, you'll see that their direction is pretty much 15% casual/non-games, 70% B-level games, and 15% megaton games.

January 18th - Wario the Thief / Wario: Master of Disguise, January 25th - Hotel Dusk, January 25th - Picross DS
February 8th - Jet Impulse / DS Air
March 8th - Yoshi's Island DS megaton, March 29th - English Training 2 casual
April 12th - Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2, April 19th - Wi-fi Clubhouse Games, April 26th - Panel de Pon DS / Planet Puzzle League
May 17th - Ouendan 2, May 24th - Kurikin Nano Island Story (like pokemon except you fight viruses against each other), May 31st - Observation Training / Flash Focus casual
June 7th - Suujin Taisen (puzzle game), June 23rd - Zelda: Phantom Hourglass megaton
July 5th - Chibi-Robo DS, July 12th - My Housekeeping Diary casual
August 2nd - Face Training casual, August 2nd - Slide Adventure Mag-Kid, August 9th - DK Jungle Climber
September 6th - theta, September 13th - Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon 2 megaton
October 4th - ASH

3 megatons, 4 casuals, 15 other games.

At 22 games over 9 months, they're averaging around 2 and a half games per month. Assuming they keep that up for November and December, we're looking at five new games. We already have two with confirmed dates: DS Novel (which apparantly Nintendo is calling "Literature Collection DS"), and Mario Party. That leaves four slots for games, and we only know about two in development--Advance Wars DS 2 and Nintendo Crossword.

So we can expect at least a few surprises unless Nintendo is really going to let DQ4 and FF4 have their space.

Thank you for pointing this out - it's exactly what I've been thinking. I think a lot of people have forgotten that the DS was not an immediate success and that it took quite a while to really ramp up in terms of software, sales and popularity.

I'm not sure Wii will ever match the insane popularity of the DS, but I think it will definitely surprise people this holiday season and next year. Metroid, SSBB, SMG, Wii Fit and Mario Kart are really going to give Nintendo the boost some believe it's been lacking the last few weeks in Japan...
