The bolded is the core of Nintendo's issue though, right?

If core gamers are only really buying a Nintendo system to play Nintendo games, and treat other devices as their primary gaming machines, then why would they pick up the Wii U versions of third party core games?

They're already heavily invested in another platform. If multiplayer is of interest to them, then presumably all their friends are on that platform as well.

Then, if the core audience for these third party ports isn't buying them in significant number, there's no point in third parties making them, and thus they don't go out of their way to develop them, which further reinforces the notion that Nintendo consoles are only for Nintendo games.

Either Nintendo needs to make and release games that keep the core audience constantly using the Wii U, or they need every third party game available (presumably through notable monetary incentives since many publishers are assuming it's not worth their while otherwise) so at least a core consumer has the option of making it their primary game machine.

As soon a drought sets it, it just sends people right back to their other machines instead of getting more invested in the Wii U. That's the biggest problem with having them in general.

To tie this more to Japan, if I was thinking about buying a Wii U, looked at upcoming console games, and decided what I really wanted to play was One Piece Musou 2, Dynasty Warriors 7, Lightning Returns, Dark Souls 2, and Metal Gear Solid V, my only option would be to just keep using my PS3, since as it stands none of those are actually on the platform I was thinking about getting. If that was the case, it's very plausible that I would just decide to stick with my PS3 and not bother picking up a Wii U until it had what I really wanted. If the Wii U had all of those games on the other hand, it would probably seem a lot more attractive than it does right now.

So I ultimately feel that they either need to A.) greatly increase first party output both in volume and variety to substitute third party support or B.) nail down across the board third party support to achieve what they seem to want to achieve (a system for Nintendo, "casual", and "core" audiences).
My point was that the first party offering is fine for now, with a good mixture of "casual/hardcore" and a diversity of genres.

The third party issue is there and always has been (and I see it's being discussed in the NPD thread) Tell me, do you buy Nintendo hardware? If the answer is yes, why? If you want all the games you said and you already have a PS3 what would you make to buy a One Piece 2 Wii U version? It's up to the developers to make a difference between versions, not up to Nintendo. Maybe we can fault Nintendo for the hardware, slow CPU and all that but in the end it's up to Ubisoft and co. to make the difference. If you rush a port and put a 60$ label next to it it's very difficult for a hardcore gamer to spend >400$ to get the console and the game if you have a cheaper alternative. It's no surprise that Zombie U is the best seller (from the third party games) right now because Ubi made a difference with the game.

About your solutions I think Nintendo is never going to do some games like CoD, Fifa... etc. to substitute third party support so they have to keep on talking with them and make sure that their next flagships titles get a Wii U version (and fund/publish exclusives like Bayonetta 2 and Lego City) but we'll see if they go this route for the second half of 2013.

So Vita is just a paperweight? I don't get it, how can it sell relatively no software. I guess off-the-charts numbers could add up to somewhere around 30k.

They're already heavily invested in another platform. If multiplayer is of interest to them, then presumably all their friends are on that platform as well.
What strikes me as having the scope to make a big difference would be if Nintendo were able to produce an online game where - for whatever reason - you'd want to be on the Wii U even when not playing that game (through notifications about friends' actions in it?). Animal Crossing *could* perhaps do that, although it's always performed much better on handhelds, so that may not be a good choice.

I'm surprised about Mario Tennis Open actually.

Is there any way of clearly demonstrating that audiences have transitioned from consoles to handhelds?

We can obviously tell that one is current bigger than the other. I'm specifically talking about console owners moving on to handhelds rather than new audiences buying one or handheld systems.

I've tried looking at the number of titles with high sales numbers on each platform and the sales history of certain franchises, but I'm not sure if they demonstrate the right thing.

It's Taiko, so it's always awesome to me, i just don't know why this got more sales than the others. It's really derivative from Taiko ketteiban. The only new addition is a 4 player game that i've only played a couple of minutes.
It's the final Wii game, and it has as many songs as arcade versions (100+) alongside console exclusive songs.

It's a regularly occurring list generated from reader response, isn't it? It should be valid enough, but there should probably be a disclaimer with it.

As far as I know, it overly represents certain types of games (readers of a gaming magazine would be gaming enthusiasts after all) and it overly represents games that will soon release (they're on the front of people's minds).

1) It's a Famitsu most wanted list.
2) Layton is more casual based, whereas Famitsu tends toward the RPG/hardcore (i.e. the real hardcore) reader base.

Anyone wanna guess what 3DS will end the year at?

Remember Pokemon X+Y are coming, Monster Hunter 4 is coming, and there are still a bunch of releases we don't know much about yet...

I wouldn't be surprised if the week Monster Hunter 4 launches, the 3DS sells 600 or 700k

1) It's a Famitsu most wanted list.
2) Layton is more casual based, whereas Famitsu tends toward the RPG/hardcore (i.e. the real hardcore) reader base.
Fair enough... but seeing PLvAA's performance, coupled with how much higher AA is on the list than PL -- it doesn't inspire much confidence.

edit: actually wait, maybe I misunderstood you
Yeah. DS might've hit 600K the week it did 598K, if it weren't for the onset of shortages, but that was like a perfect storm with Brain Training 2 releasing after the DS had been building momentum all year with Brain Training, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart. PSP did its highest week ever at over 300K with the release of MHP3, so probably something around that (or maybe even 400K) may be more reasonable.

Well my only reasoning for the 600k number is that --- MH4 is like Call of Duty Modern Warfare for Japan... It typically attracts an audience that does not play Nintendo products (as much) but more the PSP... It is the most anticipated game in Japan right now on Famitsu's Most Wanted... I think it will sell a million units the first week of release and will probably be Capcom's biggest game sales-wise ever (will probably easily eclipse Biohazard 2 on PSX)... I think a modified Monster Hunter 4 specific 3DSXL (perhaps with second stick?) and packed-in game could set records... Knowing Nintendo/Capcom I'm sure they are trying to do a limited edition bundle... if they go the second stick route, I can totally see people double-dipping for that

As for 6.5 million number... that is a good guess actually... For Nintendo to sell 10 million units of hardware it would need to average 200k per week for 52 weeks... 6.5 million is about 130k per week for 52 weeks which is aggressive but reasonable... Given the lineup and the past success of the DS... I imagine anything <5 million in hardware sales this year would be a HUGE dissappointment... If Nintendo gets a stready stream of innovative first-party content out throughout the year... I could see them hitting up to 10 million units which would be remarkable
