Monster Hunter was a social phenomena before hitting the psp?
It is true that the MH franchise would not be this big if the PSP never existed, but all sony did there was release the PSP and watch it from distance. The resurgence of the PSP in Japan is thanks to Capcom's visionary move to put MH on the PSP (yay hyperbole).

Wonder if Demon Souls can take off in a similar fashion on the NGP.

Doubtful unless they change some things with the game.

Level restrictions mean ad-hoc won't be as commonly used and if they still have the soul form/human form shit then yeah.... good luck with it being anything but niche.

I'd still buy it though :D

Eh? Did an NGP Demon's Souls get announced?

Nope, but the creator says he'd like to do it for NGP.

Why the hell have they not announced a 2D Mario game yet? It's pretty fucking disturbing that they seem to be concentrated on the stupid Galaxy-esque game. If there has been a post-GameCube Nintendo console where I would say Nintendo has lost their way, the 3DS is it -- thus far, at least. I hope they can turn it around.

They haven't even announced the Galaxy-esque game yet. Hahaha. They just did a little two-shot teaser to an industry-only audience and said "for more info, wait until we actually announce it".

I mean, they certainly bungled their launch software lineup a little, but are you really expecting them to announce a ton of software that won't be out until fall/winter/next year before E3?

Because they have already announced a number of other big games, Mario Kart included.

Disturbing for making a Galaxy-esque game? We have no idea what they are doing with Super Mario 3DS, other than four screenshots and a comment from Miyamoto. We can assume quality akin to Galaxy, but I think Galaxy's "planet" aspect is not returning for this game.

They can't make a New Super Mario Bros 3DS if they are making a Pikmin 3. It's the same damn team, just about. And if they are making one, they sure as hell won't announce it until it is good and ready. It could be coming out August and we wouldn't know. That's how Nintendo works.

I doubt the 2D Mario team is working on 3DS right now since they would need that team on their next console to make the near launch lineup respectable.

Are you suggesting that the Galaxy-esque game doesn't exist? Really?

Not sure you're on about with the future-lineup thing, but the entire fact that they seem to be putting out a Galaxy game ahead of 2D game for a freaking handheld system is disturbing. Yeah, there may still be a 2D Mario game, but they're deciding to go with a Galaxy game before it. Poor planning, in my opinion. This isn't a home console, and the market has shown itself to like the 2D Mario games more.

They can't make a New Super Mario Bros 3DS if they are making a Pikmin 3. It's the same damn team, just about.
Well, if they are putting a Pikmin game before a 2D Mario game, then...lol

Whre did you remember that? That brand is dead.

I see PSP in stock at amazon after a very long time. Sony must have shipped many systems last week.

2D 3DS Mario is all but announced, and has been for longer than the 3D one. Unless you interpret this quote as meaning the 3D Mario will be really really oldschool and 2Dey.

From the Iwata Asks series around SMB's 25th anniversary:
Iwata: To the average person out there, it might look like you aren't exactly pursuing the most advanced technology, but in truth, you've always had a relatively strong attitude of insatiably adopting the latest video game technology. I think that may be why Super Mario Bros. hasn't grown old even after 25 years.

What's more, I think one reason that people who had started playing Mario with the Wii can comfortably enjoy playing the original Super Mario Bros. is because the foundation is well made, including the "pleasure components" that Kondo-san spoke of. I think that the secret to longevity may be the games' blend of old and new elements.

Miyamoto: That's the culture of Kyoto.

Iwata: Oh, Kyoto's distinctive culture.

Miyamoto: Kyoto lights up even really old temples with the latest technology. I think Kyoto's culture is one of keeping tradition alive by absorbing lots of new things. But it's not like we consciously think about that every day. (laughs)

Iwata: That culture is a clear influence on the birth of Nintendo in Kyoto and its continued existence here. I wasn't born or raised in Kyoto, but when I hear what you just said, I think it's true.

Miyamoto: Yes. So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system.

Iwata: The next stage for the Super Mario Bros. Preservation Society's activities is the Nintendo 3DS.

Miyamoto: Yes. (laughs) I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS.

Iwata: I'm really looking forward to it myself! Thank you for your time today.

If "new" was capitalized then yes I'd believe in it. However, the new Super Mario Game is the 3D one we saw with mario and the raccoon tail.

According to retailer blogs they sent out shipments for two weeks at once, aka Next Thursday(this Thursday, I guess) there is no new shipment

I know what you mean--but being picky on the wording another way, no Super Mario Bros. game so far has been anything but a 2D platformer.

Nintendo could do with cutting the 3DS price around Christmas - A 'relaunch', if you will. £129.99 / $149.99 kind of price is necessary for it to achieve anything like the kind of critical mass its predecessor did.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I think this time around Nintendo will release less console updates (à la Lite, DSi, DSiXL) but instead also lower the actual price of the 3DS.

Expecting a $100 price drop and so soon after launch seems a bit steep though. You can be sure the sales will pick up once there are more games, reaching the sales numbers of the DS is another question - yet it seems to be what most are expecting therefore calling the 3DS a failure or similar things.

There's no need to drop the price within the first year of it's existence unless the console does not sell at all, which isn't the case with 3DS.

I know it's not going to happen, of course, and I like my 3DS a lot (five hours of SSFIV and 17 on Ridge Racer says that it's ticked the right boxes) but I do think it's going to struggle being comparatively expensive - And I suspect the same of the PSP. They'll sell well, but the DS in particular is used to doing mega-sales, and you need more than the core who'll pay over 200 for a handheld to reach anything like that sort of level.

Very optimistic. 200$ unless Nintendo is dragging their feet and keeping the price at 250$.

As long as they release a 3DSXL geared toward 3-D movie support, I'm fine. Gamed on GBA+Afterburner two gens ago. Regular DS last gen until DSi came out (new screen + new games = worth the double dip, to me). I'm not jumping in to 3DS until the XL version comes out for watching movies. 3-D movie support is my killer app. :lol

so this list of PSN accounts by country has been circulating (i think the source is Mark MacD but who knows). i think it was released as part of "our shit got hacked"-gate.

AOnFs.jpg

so 113% accounts to consoles sold ratio in japan. might be interesting to compare with the same ratio in the us (i don't have an up to date ps3 ltd on hand) and any other countries with known ltds and the ratios are similar would be neat to extrapolate elsewhere.

Media Create 2010 top 100 (from top 500) used game sales

Last column is used/new ratio

085. [PSP] Phantasy Star Portable (Sega) {2008.07.31} - 77.065 / 625.727 (78,45%)

PSP Phantasy Star Portable - 671,443 (Media Create through same date)

I don't understand the ratio value.

so this list of PSN accounts by country has been circulating (i think the source is Mark MacD but who knows). i think it was released as part of "our shit got hacked"-gate.

so 113% accounts to consoles sold ratio in japan. might be interesting to compare with the same ratio in the us (i don't have an up to date ps3 ltd on hand) and any other countries with known ltds and the ratios are similar would be neat to extrapolate elsewhere.

Saudi Arabia - 651,018

Having lived almost all my life there, I can tell you that the PlayStation brand there rules over everything else, but I had no idea it was this strong.

Sucks that I left the country right after the PS3 released :(

I don't understand the ratio value.

This year's used sales/ total used sales/ Percent of used sales vs new sales(if used sales are 99 copies and new sales are 100 copies, the ratio is 99%)

Also Tale of the last promise creator's twitter comments:

First day sales were good enough for them to continue the JRPG project,
First week sale-through are very high

Since this is from whatever made the weekly Famitsu Top 30 lists it's necessarily incomplete, but hey. Another thing that makes 3DS look like PSP.

Total software sales:

First party software sales:

Third party software sales:

Does that make it 25% off launch rrp? And a free Nintendogs?

Shops must have severely overstocked on Nintendogs, can't say I blame them though.

I don't know any japanese but my guess is that those pics must be desperately screaming "BOMBA!! Please take this software away from us! "

Estimates from azalyn

[PSP] Final Promise Story - 65.000
[PS3] El Shaddai - 65.000
[PSP] Patapon 3 - 50.000

Final Promise Story did better than I thought, although it most likely won't reach its 150,000 units sold goal...

Ouch, 3DS is in VERY bad shape right now...

It can certainly be turned around but it still is pretty disastrous, gonna be interesting to see how it's doing by the end of the year!

Kinda Important this correct this misinterpretation:

That's 1000 yen off of nintendogs so it basically means you can get a used 3ds and used nintendogs for about 20,800 (or a used 3ds and new nintendogs for 21,300). This is still absurdly cheap,

- This also is not just a one store promotion, a large game store chain and from my calls it appears to be at every store in the chain.
- Sofmap(Major major large electronics store) has almost all of the launch 3ds games(and blazblue) now priced at 2900 yen new, this is close to 50% discount.
- Sofmap's trade in prices for 3ds are now in the 13700 range, I can't find a store anywhere that is taking 3ds in for more then 15,000 trade in value.
- Geos has a a buy 3 used games get 20% off promotion. they have all 3ds launch(besides dinosaur and puzzle bubble) games priced at 2980. This literally means you can get a 3ds plus 3 not so bad games for around 26,000yen.

I'm starting to worry about the damage to the brand value of the 3ds, the fact that people are now willing to give up their 3ds at this point for close to half of what they paid for them is amazing.

Thanks, although by the prices I think it means 1000 yen off both 3DS and Nintendogs.
But I didn't even realise it was used sales at first.

No it clearly states that from the sub total you get 1000 yen off

edit: Oh, I now see how that can be confusing, yeah the 3ds is specially marked off, then they have the promotion if you buy a 3ds and nintendogs you get 1000 yen off.
