Honestly, I expect that Xbone is doing worse than even MS expected, if only because I can't understand the justification for even releasing in Japan if that's the best they could do. Even late lifespan 360 did better.
Oh I'm sure MS initially expected it to do better, but obviously they have lowered expectation to extremely low number (I see no ads outside of stores still handling XB1).

When XenoX was originally announced I think Nintendo expected bigger sales too, but then lowered it later. However as for this we still have Western market to help it (I hope).

hiska-kun, your link to last week's thread in the OP is broken. You forgot the /forum/ in the url. I'm afraid to fix it because I'm not sure if you'll be adding more stuff to the OP later and might replace the broken link again...

Honestly, I'm not convinced that these Xbone sales aren't just excess stock that's been sitting in stores for months

The JRPG audience is firmly on Sony platforms, outside of stalwarts like Dragon Quest. No matter how well received those games may be on other systems, they practically do not exist if they're not on a Playstation.
Well there's Pokémon and Mario RPGs, the forgotten JRPG RPGs.

And Yokai heh

Does it? I was under the impression that only Smash and Kart 8 had a significant attach ratio.
Well if we compare to a successful console the attach rates are all pretty impressive given how low the grand total is.

That said here's the million sellers on the platform: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/wiiu.html

Notably things like Donkey Kong and Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2 aren't there, which is more the realm of this game.

Now, half that number? It's not impossible, but like I don't think the difference between 300K and 500K is all that meaningful in the grand scheme of things for the type of game this is.

Fixed, thanks

I did. I still don't see how this is that damning for X
Your assertion is that Xenoblade X is performing notably better than anyone could expect, or even notably at all.

I'm pointing out that there are everyday console games doing about these numbers on PS4, duckroll is pointing out that it's about the same as the last game, other people are pointing out it's doing about the same as you saw with Xbox 360 JRPGs.

The people who bought all these games didn't fall off the face of the earth. There is software crossing the million mark on Wii U in Japan, and the userbase at 2.3 million copies is around where the Vita was when it was having smaller games hit into the 200K+ range to boot.

Even if we just look at the Wii U itself, Pikmin 3 started at 102,188 and ended at 232,313.

Looking at smaller titles to establish a floor, Fatal Frame was a debut of 32,476 and an LTD of 52,360, with Bayonetta 2 doing almost the same. Lego City Undercover had an LTD of 74,734. This isn't miles ahead of them.

The reason you feel you're being made fun of is because there's nothing that's standout about this performance. It's not notably bad. It's not notably good. It's bowling pretty much exactly what people expected.

COD BO2 - 540k
BF4 - 355k

Splatoon is just what the WiiU needs. Watch, this will be a break out hit, I just have this feeling it will be....oh btw breakout hit means 70-100k FW given the circumstances

okay I'll stop now ;___;
What platforms are these numbers for? PS3/4?

I wouldn't expect those dudes to own Wii Us personally.

So Xenoblade bombed and dropped faster than I realized it would.

To the guy spinning and making this out to be less of a flop than it is idk how you do it.

Considering the marketing push in Japan and the surprising amount of Japanese people who seemed to partake in the Testfire I think your estimate might not be that unrealistic.

I think you are the one spinning this. Xenoblade basically just performed exactly as everyone expected. Not a bomb, not a hit.

Exactly. Xeno X is doing really well for pretty much any console game in Japan, let along a barely established IP on the Wii U. Success is very much relative.
I wouldn't say that though. It's doing what it can "all thing considered", no more , no less. There's nothing to really discuss here, save the "lol" and bland jokes. It sold consoles, it will sell its low initial shipment without price drop.

Definitely wouldn't say XCX was a "flop". It seems to be doing within expectations. But it did have a steeper drop than anticipated.
When you have quite a few vita games having higher debuts tho... Even some PS4 games sold better. When will we accept its not doing well? It can barely hit 200k

Puzzle & Dragons has been moved all the way down to #4 on the Japanese top grossing charts, this time due to Square Enix (Dragon Quest) and Namco Bandai (One Piece).

I'm not sure the last time this has happened. Might actually be a few years.
I still see P & D being played in commuter train every day. I wonder who will be next giant that can "overwrite" the current champion.

I feel like we need a weekly mobile ranking chart to partner with this data going forward. I'd be interested in the interplay because there's a lot of problems. I don't think mobile could have supplanted the entire market, it just doesn't cover enough of the same ground, but there's probably part of the picture there.

I forgot that WWHD did over a million, and I guess I took the attach rates of the Mario games for granted since it would have been extremely worrying if those didn't sell well.

Then again, I would have expected something like Lego City and DKCTP to be among the lines of something the userbase would be buying. X's opening was more or less what I expected, but I didn't it expect to drop so much for the second week.

Currently P&D and Monster Strike spend a lot of time trading the #1 spot, but P&D is no longer so unassailable that other games can't top it.

Similarly in the West we see Game of War overtaking Clash of Clans from time to time.

I'm assuming he was only talking about consoles, and not portables. Although it still strikes me as odd when it was 360 sales that were in question
ToV on 360 was definitely not putting up the normal numbers for the series, which was the point I was trying to get across.

It's doing about as much as the original Xenoblade release. How is that a "flop"? I guess every single western and small budget Japan title is also a "flop", if we go by your bizarre standard of only comparing LTD, and not doing the reasonable thing of setting expectations?

Do we know if this is because the average spend on the top games is decreasing or the ones below it are increasing to the same level? That is, the top line is moving up or down?

Poor Xenoblade :'(

At least it did better than Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 combined.

I feel like I've been living under a rock because I don't remember seeing drop-offs like these...

Comparing to XenobladeX, I think the drop-off for Bayonetta 2 was a bit better according to MC at around -80%?

Wonder what Famitsu has to say though.

It's difficult to gauge exact numbers for mobile since we don't get hard numbers for anything, only guesses based on correlating rank with IR reports and using download rank metrics from GooP.

Right, while there are certainly individual things to discuss, my immediate whole picture reaction to these results were that they were astonishingly terrible, especially given what time it was.
I mean an almost 80% drop to Puzzle Dragons Mario, and software results across the board being quite poor - it's quite bad.

Furthermore, there are almost 19 million 3DS' shipped in Japan in Nintendo's Q4 and hardware results are also weak, even in GW, quite bleak.

Calling it now.
Next week is going to be the worst week ever in the japanese game history.
Sad

In general the market has been going notably up, but in P&D's case they're making less money than they used to (though still a very healthy amount).

By comparison, Clash of Clans - to my understanding - is still going up.

The overall market is seeing very heavy growth at the top.

http://venturebeat.com/2015/05/06/why-kabam-is-shifting-to-the-deep-end-of-mobile-games-with-big-budgets/

According to market researcher App Annie, the top mobile game — Clash of Clans from Supercell — makes more than $80 million a month. In 2012, the top game brought in $4.6 million a month. That’s a 1,750 percent increase. Meanwhile, the top 100 game generated $1.2 million a month in the first quarter of 2015, compared to $311,000 in 2012. That’s a 295 percent increase.
For the Android market, excluding China, the top five games in the first quarter of 2012 had a 10 percent market share, or $42 million in revenue. In the first quarter of 2015, the market share for the top five was 22 percent of the overall games market, or $926.5 million. By comparison, the top five console games in the U.S. had 13 percent market share in 2000, according to market researcher NPD. In 2014, the top five console games had 24 percent of the market. That suggests we’re seeing the same movie play out in the mobile game business.
