Witcher up top? Wow. Good for CDPR.

Yikes at everything else after that. Square needs to hurry up and put some more PS4 games out; Sony as well.

The witcher doing that well gives me hope for Japan. Maybe most of their gamers are just not impressed with the systems releases so far?

Dang, those hardware numbers...good thing there's the Ice White New 3DS XL coming in two weeks, Nintendo should release more colors in the next months...and hopefully drop the price too.

Still, that's a FANTASTIC debut for The Witcher 3, honestly.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Likely one handheld next gen so should free up some cash (I expect people who own a Vita mostly also own a 3DS or have one in their household) to give some survivability.
Probably wont be enough - Vita market is very small anyway. Whatever they put out - all upcoming Nintendo software has to be playable on NX. The market need one really strong Nintendo platform...they cant divide resources between console and handhelds anymore.

Unless Nintendo wants to take hundreds of millions of dollars, put it in a pile, and burn it, I doubt they're going with a separate ecosystem dedicated console for Gen 9.

I think that's the plan and if not it should be. NX should also have all of Nintendo's mobile games.

End of an era....unless NX can somehow revive somehow the traditional market.
3DS is the one that has the lower amount of responsibilities for the current situation: it sustained the market alone (more or less) for 4 years, now it has entered its fifth year, while still selling good amounts of software. It certainly should be higher, but I don't think 3DS is the main problem here (or the upcoming successor, at least in the first few years)...it's the rest that has lagged behind dramatically. and is still lagging behind

EDIT: And still, as said by others, next gen should be the beginning of a different era for Nintendo, with games shared across devices too (which...highights how bad the non-handheld market is doing, if the way to stay is sharing games with the handheld).

New release with almost 70k units sold and still no noticeable jump for PS4 and in the 10k units territory, despite a rather low userbase, which normally makes spikes quite easy to achieve.

PSV almost <10k despite new releases.

3DS also in a questionable state, starting with RhythmHeaven+ and white 3DS it will get to more healthy sales starting next month though.

I thought the Witcher 3 was probably a better bet for the Japanese market than previous open-world WRPGs, if only because the defined main character, strong central plot-line, and Eastern European mythic atmosphere seemed a bit closer to where some JRPGs have tried heading albeit with Western game-play. Will be interesting if it gets GTA V style legs. It is quite long, which should depress used sales a bit.

Also I think this is a preview of the future in Japan. Rather than funding large-scale Japanese AAA projects, you'll see budget ones, while Japanese-friendly or potentially Japanese-friendly Western AAA titles will get big pushes. That sort of approach would be a low-cost way of keeping the market on life-support for Sony, much in the same way they have kept the Vita on life-support elsewhere and let third parties carry the burden.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Unless Nintendo wants to take hundreds of millions of dollars, put it in a pile, and burn it, I doubt they're going with a separate ecosystem dedicated console for Gen 9.
I think that's the plan and if not it should be. NX should also have all of Nintendo's mobile games.
True - the benefit for Nintendo are clear, but the current display also confirms that the market will be screwed beyond repair if they dont deliver with the NX. Most publishers dont really care anymore because of that mobile money and Sony is focusing on the western market.

I never said that the 3DS is the main problem or at fault. The system does what its supposed to do and sold as much units and software as the current market environment allows.

Actually the 3DS is even doing better than expected considering how strong the mobile market in Japan is and its lackluster hardware.

Well, at least Xenoblade X was able to crack 100K in about a month...hopefully strong word of mouth will help it keep selling just like the first Xenoblade...with a little luck, it can probably still reach 1 million globally at full price.

I'm legit curious about its digita numbers, especially considering how it was available for months as pre-load. Not expecting anything amazing, but still quite curious about that.
