i keep losing track - someone around here was arguing it -was- a mainline entry? CVX?

(i assume "mainline to the story" rather than "it's actually RE6")
As far as gamedesign, production values and canon are concerned, it might as well be a mainline title, but Capcom is obviously not committed enough to actually number it like a mainline game. Similar to how Konami didn't call Peace Walker MGS5.

I think you're quite high on all of those except Gundam, which is really low.
I know I'm high on Armored Core 5. I believe there is an increased perception of From Software's brand name in Japan now, and it will help push the sales significantly. I could be wrong though. I don't think I'm high at all on Idolmaster. In fact I'm really confident that it will sell 14-16k. Gundam is not an action game. It is a really low budget RTS on the PSP with zero hype. It looks like this:

Many hard landings on Nintendo side in the lower part of the charts too. If I may allow myself something totally heretic, I would mention that the average drop for the average Nintendo titles (lots of average beware) from last week is around 70% which would give us a score of 5k for One Piece, and maybe also Skyrim.

By the way, Chris, you did that on purpose in last wek's thread, right ? ;-)

Preference of game design, marketing, retailer confidence, gaming habits of the core audience for the title, etc. There are many factors here and comparing one thing to another thing without looking at the details is not really a meaningful examination.

Regarding game design, isnt it pretty much similar? I mean, that PW is similar to MGS4 in gameplay, while Revelation is similar to i.e RE4 in gameplay. Or was it something special in PW that made many people buy it that wasnt interested in MGS4? I have no idea about how the marketing and retail confidence was compared between the two games though.

what is the meaning of this reaction????? is there hope for SS?

I mean... can it still possibly sell somewhere near TP when everything is said and done?

Are Japanese somehow discovering SS, now that the Holiday craze is over??

The meaning of this is that the remake of a 14 year old game is selling better than a new Zelda game that was in development for 5 years.

There's no hope for SS. It's mega bomba.

I assumed having a heavy co-op component on the system that had sold 6m+ Monster Hunter games was part of it.

Nah. Now that the holiday craze is over, being in the 30s isn't much of anything. SS can leg it a little, and its start isn't so different from TP's, but it won't be riding a monster wave of new Wii owners like TP had throughout 2007.

Peace Walker was released at a time when the PSP already had a very healthy userbase that was open to this kind of core game.

The 3DS's userbase isn't very small anymore either, but the system still lacks a history of successful core franchises. MH3G and other games are good first steps, but the platform is not quite there yet.

PW is designed from the start to be a portable experience. All missions are bite-sized and longer ones are broken up into separate missions. The entire game has co-op in the campaign, 2-players for normal missions, 4-players for all bosses. There were also tons of communication features like item trading, soldier trading, etc. The base simulation stuff which you do between missions is also unlike anything in "normal" MGS games.

In many ways, PW took the base design concepts of MPO, improved them tremendously, and added mainline MGS polish and production values on it, with actual direction and writing by Kojima. Let's not forget that Konami basically did every single thing right in Japan with regards to the announcements and marketing in PW.

They had the Monster Hunter tie-in where you could unlock missions where you fight Monster Hunter bosses, they had major tie-ups with every fucking product in Japan from soft drinks, junk food, t-shirts, etc actually having product placement in the game, you could buy MGS t-shirts from Uniqlo and use the DLC codes on the shirts to unlock that actual shirt to wear in the game itself, etc.

I don't think PW's release is remotely similar in any way to RE:R, in terms of a worthwhile comparison. But even if we ignore all that, let's not forget that PW did not manage to outsell MGS3, which is the real benchmark here. MGS4 on the other hand is the lowest selling mainline MGS.

Yeah, the 3DS userbase is also very healthy now indeed. Not just by size, but also the huge momentum (weekly sales) that it has now as well. I'm not sure if history of core games matter that much when it is selling so much (because then a lot of people own a 3DS). But of course, it depends exactly on who that owns a 3DS and who that is buying one, if they are interested in games like RE:R etc.

It does. Just because a plattform is moving a good number of units it's not guaranteed that it also sells to the particular audience that likes a particular style of game. For example, the average Mario player won't be very interested in a RE game.

Ah ok, i see. Do you know how RE:R compares to RE5? Is it missing something, equal, or have additional stuff?
It's kind of hard to compare because RE5 was greatly different in structure compared to the other REs. It also in many ways was seen as a downgrade in content since the single player was about half the length of RE4's and that RE4 had additional single player scenarios already included while RE5 had seperate single player scenarios offered as DLC instead.

However, there are a few things that are different to be more handheld oriented. First of all it has been broken up into a more episodic structure. While the main game occurs on the Cruise ship it will occasionally take a break and explore other characters/settings and then return back to the Cruise Ship scenario. It also will have a new special Co-op raid mode. I think they also said Streetpass would be implemented as well.

Other than that though this game appears to have the content, length and gameplay of a standard RE game. The pacing will be a bit different though by being more of an episodic structure making it easier to play bits at a time.

Amazon Watch: RE6 preorders already started. 360 version 20th. And while the PS3 version can win against KH3D (3rd), it can't do ANYTHING against the massive load of otaku preordering Super Robot Taisen Z2-2. No one can defeat it. NO ONE.

Now that NCL has the emergency re-release of SS at the end of the month the game is guaranteed to sell 1 million.

I see. It sounds like RE:R has some things going for it. If it sells less than RE5, then it shouldnt be because of game itself, at least that is the picture i get from reading this.

Thanks for the info everyone :)

I think a more reasonable comparison would be with Portable Ops, which in fact opened just below 200k and sold 355k LTD (though the deluxe version sold about the same).
Any reason why you want to compare it to Portable Ops instead of Peacewalker?

3DS's huge momentum sure helped Ace Combat, and SD Gundam...

Fact of the matter is this, PW was a game designed for handheld play through and through. It was from a franchise that already had a decently received portable iteration in recent history (Portable Ops), focused on multiplayer, a userbase larger than 10 million to draw from, and had an incredibly strong marketing campaign. Resident Evil: Revelations has absolutely none of this going for it.

It does. Just because a plattform is moving a good number of units it's not guaranteed that it also sells to the particular audience that likes a particular style of game. For example, the average Mario player won't be very interested in a RE game.
But will the average Monster Hunter player be interested in it?

I think a more reasonable comparison would be with Portable Ops, which in fact opened just below 200k and sold 355k LTD (though the deluxe version sold about the same).
Revelations seems to have higher production values but if it does ~350/400k LTD I think it would be a great result.

Personally I think the game has the potential to sell at least 1.5/2M WW

MPO+ is not a deluxe version. It is an expansion pack with additional multiplayer content released a year later.
And no single player mode if I remember correctly.

It looks like this:
you see, here's the thing - most gundam strat games look like absolute turds, but from last weeks famitsu it looks quite nice to me (and maybe to the odd PSP fan, i dunno?)

I'm guessing from the "it looks like this" you don't think it looks nice (?)

what is the meaning of this reaction????? is there hope for SS?
a fair few places now have SS on reduction with 2000 yen off as a day deal if you bought with a motion+ (going back to 1000 yen off this weekend)
second hand copies in abundance now at 4800 yen though.

Yeah, the 3DS userbase is also very healthy now indeed. Not just by size, but also the huge momentum (weekly sales) that it has now as well.
I keep seeing this but the 3rd party sales have been worrying outside of Capcom recently - i'm hoping the fact RThief was sold out is a sign that things are going in the right way, but all this talk of huge momentum is really for 3 games. We need that to start expanding out to other games. If Thief and BtL pull shitty numbers then that's going to be a worry.

By the way, Chris, you did that on purpose in last wek's thread, right ? ;-)

What did on purpose?

Now that NCL has the emergency re-release of SS at the end of the month the game is guaranteed to sell 1 million.
Is there anything else besides the bundle with the white motion plus?

And does anybody know why the game is 6.800 yen instead of 5.800 like other Nintendo Wii games? (I thought that was the limited edition but seeing that the white version is going to cost 8.800 then the 6.800 yen version is the single one... right?)

Many Nintendo games for Wii cost 6800.

IEGo is doing well...and above all, it's still selling. Probably, it'll have legs and legs for at least other two months.
Gundam is at 125-130k probably, and it also obtained to not fall completely out of the charts this week; it's selling.
The very, very little games with legs (Shin-Chan, Nicola,...) probably are still selling as Nicola.
Just Ace Bomba bombed hard so far.

About Rhythm Thief R...eh, but we have to see its shipment, since also Shinrei Camera was sold out, but the shipment was very low XD

pass - big budget last hurrah Wii game but more likely to make the price of the 8.800 bundle look a bit better (?)

5,800 yen game plus 3,800 yen controller = 9,600
6,800 yen game plus 3,800 yen controller = 10,600

OH DAT VALUE PROPOSITION! or something.

If you're not willing to say Inazuma Eleven was a bomb with a 35% first week sell through, why are you condemning Ace Combat? Is it because it debuted worse than a PSP entry? So did that Gundam game. Hell, that Gundam game debuted lower on 3DS compared to PSP despite the latter having the smaller install base at the time of its first SD Gundam release.

I think IE Go is a disappointment for Level-5, but Hino's crazy.
