That wasn't always the case. Sega, Hudson, SNK, Bandai and other first parties had been relatively dominant on thier own platforms too. Really it's Sony and Microsoft being relatively weak that's more odd historically.

Do you think that speaks to their perceived quality, or more to the actual IPs being leveraged?

It is not exactly doing the jitterbug now. 133 weeks to reach a shit LTD for a handheld is pathetic.

So you'd agree that the system has been selling like shit since it launched and even reaching 3 million was expected to take awhile relatively early on, if it even made it there at all.

Tank! Tank! Tank! is a console exclusive, isn't it? The other version being for arcades.

Ah ok, I wasn't sure about that one. I knew there was another version, but didn't know it was for arcades. That being said, this game had a better first week than the W101.

Huh missed this thread today.

Freedom Wars seems to have opened as well as could possibly have been expected.

Vita numbers got a nice bump but yet to see if it will hold a higher baseline because of it

Wii U stabilizing at 10k? That'd be decent for the console

PS4 only getting a 1k bump from Watch Dogs? Seems to have sold mostly to those who already own it I would guess

Congrats Sony on 10M PS3 and 3M PSV sales

Mario Kart DS & Wii had very strong legs and kept selling for years while Super Circuit and Double Dash didn't sell much after first year.

Wow. PSV sales on Dengeki is much lower compare to the other two tracker.

Could you also post the LTD sales, please?

Super Mario Kart (3.820.000)
Mario Kart 64 (1.711.661)
Mario Kart Super Circuit (938.175)
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (825.894)
Mario Kart DS (4.002.914)
Mario Kart Wii (3.701.492)
Mario Kart 7 (2.227.684)
Mario Kart 8 (512.467) with DL sales (13.993) = 526.460

I remember when people said Mario 3D World would stop at 300k and never hit 500k (last update: 567,276).

Trying to predict Mario legs is not easy. I believe Mario Kart 8 will continue to sell past 1 million units. This holiday season will be very important for Wii U, more than any other. ITS EITHER KILL OR DIE!

And more info about Mobile games on 3DS, looks like Nintendo is on the hunt too:

These days, applications originally for smart devices have been made for Nintendo 3DS and there are million-selling titles among them. App developers are more willing to develop software for Nintendo 3DS because of the situation, and we at Nintendo are also looking at the popular smart device applications with the prospect of expanding our line of Nintendo 3DS titles. I hope you keep looking forward to our upcoming titles. Thank you.

Good to see Wii U with stable numbers. Also pretty good to see Mario Kart 8 selling well too, it will come close or surpass Super Mario 3D Worlds sales soon.
Even Kamen Raider did better than I expected and Yo-kai watch still in God mode, quite impressive.

Do you think that speaks to their perceived quality, or more to the actual IPs being leveraged?

I think it's because Sony and Microsoft make games that appeal to Western tastes and have Western art styles, while SNK and Bandai made games are aimed at Japanese tastes and have Japanese art styles. Which isn't the say that they companies can't luck out in a territory they aren't focusing on or can't change their target, but they're most likely to succeed where they intend to succeed.

Hmm, didn't they whine about Catherine's difficulty as well? Don't take me wrong FW seems to be brutal but not BS brutal.
Then again it can be just me taking anecdotal stories to heart of how the majority of the Japanese gaming community has become soft.

New Love Plus and JoJo All-Star Battle both crashed after the first week due to bad word of mouth. Since those two were due to more serious issues than difficulty I don't think it'll be a problem for Freedom Wars, but it's worth keeping in mind anyway.

Not really. It did well, but failed to hit 200k, which I believe someone mentioned was Sony's expectation. It also gave Vita a decent boost, but not decent enough to topple the 3DS.
Fair enough if you dont think its interesting. Personally, i think its interesting to see a game selling basically it's LTD expectation in the first week, and definitelly a more interesting point compared to the standard sales-numbers weeks :)

EDIT: What did Famitsu prove you wrong on by the way?

It's interesting to see Wii U outselling PS4 consistently in Japan. Not that either is doing terribly well, but at least Nintendo kinda understands their home country's market. Apparently.

So what are the chances that MK8 will outsell Double Dash at least? Seeing that there's still the holidays for this year to come I can see it getting a boost and strengthening the legs. Even more so if a bundle is announced for the holidays in Japan.

MK8 needs some Summer DLC what is taking so long to get this stuff announced? please don't tell me DLC for MK8 will wait for Amiibo

It's interesting to see Wii U outselling PS4 consistently in Japan. Not that either is doing terribly well, but at least Nintendo kinda understands their home country's market. Apparently.

It has nothing to do with that and everything to do with the Wii U's having a much stronger software library with its head start and its biggest game, Mario Kart, just released recently, while the PS4 has been going through the post-launch drought.

WiiU has notable software....like I dunno Mario Kart while the PS4 has a pretty barebones release schedule. So does WiiU mind you but the titles WiiU has appeal more to the Japanese crowd right now. It must be noted that the WiiU is a year older so its software pipeline is ahead of the PS4's.

Do you think that speaks to their perceived quality, or more to the actual IPs being leveraged?
I think it speaks to focus. Microsoft and even Sony are essentially western publishers at this point, they can barely be bothered with considering the Japanese market anymore.

That said I do think SCE was a strong publisher on PS1. Not as dominant as Sega or Nintendo on their platforms but they had a lot diversity and success with games like Parappa, Xai, Arc the Lad, Tomba, Minna no Golf, Gran Turismo and plenty more. Each successive generation though SCE's Japan focused output seems to have just gotten weaker and weaker.

They don't. But they actually have games while the PS4 is still a wasteland in terms of Japanese support.

So what are the chances that MK8 will outsell Double Dash at least? Seeing that there's still the holidays for this year to come I can see it getting a boost and strengthening the legs. Even more so if a bundle is announced for the holidays in Japan.

I think that it stands a chance to outsell Double Dash during this holiday, if people actually pick up more Wii Us for the upcoming games and choose the MK8 bundle.

Fair enough if you dont think its interesting. Personally, i think its interesting to see a game selling basically it's LTD expectation in the first week, and definitelly a more interesting point compared to the standard sales-numbers weeks :)

EDIT: What did Famitsu prove you wrong on by the way?

Famitsu says Vita outsold 3DS this week, which I think is actually pretty darn interesting.

New Love Plus and JoJo All-Star Battle both crashed after the first week due to bad word of mouth. Since those two were due to more serious issues than difficulty I don't think it'll be a problem for Freedom Wars, but it's worth keeping in mind anyway.

Oho, well never underestimate the word of mouth then. SCEJA should address it ASAP. Probably hold a mini conference on the issue.

Huh, this is interesting:

Chain Chronicle, a popular F2P mobile game from SEGA, is getting a Vita port. The PSN version launches on July 15th but a retail version (with content you'd otherwise have to pay for) will come out in September.

From what I'm hearing it's more of an issue of expectations rather than actual unfair difficulty. Some Japanese players went in expecting a Monster Hunter clone, whereas the game is more of a Third-person-shooter/Monster Hunter hybrid.

Just imagine if Sony didnt lost Monster Hunter. Granted, we probably wouldnt have had any of these Monster Hunter esque games, but I would wager the Vita would be a bigger seller in Japan if it had Monster Hunter.

What exactly is the bargain edition of GTA V? Is that Rockstar trying to snub Ubi's Watch Dogs sales by re-releasing the same week?

I don't think he means the Vita would have outsold the 3DS. That was never a logical outcome. I think with Monster Hunter on Vita the system would have sold at the very least an extra two million systems since launch however.

Is it true Vitas are selling out? It's probably mostly Japan if true.

The Vita TV is perfect for Japan. It's funny how they're embracing that little console and shunning the PS4.

I think PSTV won't be quite successful in the west because of the blockbuster AAA game playing nature of the western market.

I want it though. But it does kind of defeat the purpose of the Vita doesn't it.

Anyway, I'm all for it. Anything that can compete with mobile in Japan and starts convincing Japan devs to support the Vita is a-ok to me!

Yokai Watch 2 Direct in about 10 hours

Monster Hunter manage the 3 million goals I wonder if YW2 can beat the first game

these are the types of hits Vita needs

people forget that Vita was deader than anything during its OLED version days now it is selling very well and steady maybe those hits will come over to Vita soon

Exact opposite for those first two points. The Vita shortage is only in America (maybe Europe) and the Vita TV has been a huge flop in Japan for the same reason the ps4 isn't selling well - it's a home console that you can't take with you on the train.

Vita sells decently one week after selling badly for the past two months, and almost all of its lifespan, and suddenly selling 'very well?'
