Sorry for the delay in response, I read your messages hours ago but some experiments came to a boil and now its many hours later, lol.

Generally you want to spike pretty high.

With the exception of a very, very small number of games, almost nothing stays in the top 20 constantly, but the more time you're spending in it and the higher you are, the more of the "big money" you're making.

Like Quiz RPG is still a big earner for COLOPL, but when it's not in the Top 3-5, it's often below #100, because the monetization there is almost entirely through events, since everyone still playing knows the most optimal times to spend money.
Right.

What I was aiming more at is, what defines the "sustainable" point of bouncing in and out of the top 20. Think of it as a question of ratios: time spent in the top and time spent not. Obviously, this ignores the "how much money do you make while at the top" which is naturally a further degree of freedom and one that could easily make a title that spend little time in the top 20 but makes that time count in orders of magnitude more than any other title, a success.

The COLOPL is a good example of this, actually, and it goes to show that such oscillations are sustainable so long as they are understood and planned for/around. But if the title is not built as smartly or managed as smartly, oscillations may not be "good enough" to keep it afloat.

The issue most series that mass produce run into is that they can't maintain either of these things. The more games you demand get put out per year, the less you tend to experiment and the more the schedule itself rules the day instead of the quality of each individual product.
I figure (hope) it's due to the 30th Anniversary celebration. Prior to this year, brand new DQ games have been relatively scarce, outside of remakes. Either way I'll be curious about how each title performs. The DQ franchise has shown incredible brand strength over the years, but it hasn't had quite this much exposure in a while, if at all.
I don't disagree. But Dragon Quest has, to me, seemed to be fairly same-y in its spin-offs. Its always some element of "RPG and...". RPG and action combat? RPG and Minecraft? RPG and Pokemon (RPG)? RPG and... well that's it actually. After that its just remakes of an older RPG. And all of these games follow the tried and true DQ design paper work in what/how the universe behaves.

What is, at the end of the day, the difference between DQJ and DQV? Its effectively the same thing with a different story, a J rather than a number, and party member heroes replaced with party member monsters. Same combat, spells, abilities, and, even, gear down to a T in the older games. (And mind, I'm not saying this is bad. DQJ, DQJ2, and DQIX came out year(s) apart from one another, and the rest was remakes with at most two titles per year.)

The usual saving grace to this, with respect to DQ, in the past has been that outside of the occasional remakes per generation, the number of titles is actually largely sparse and spread over time. The current blitz, though, is on a level that even Zelda doesn't tend to experience with us seeing a "Dragon Quest and..." mix-up with a large number of titles within a year or so.

Splatoon keeps on going, if there is a bump with the school holidays - the trend will mirror MK8. That leads to speculation of another bump in December. Last year MK8 was selling 20k-40k in December. By than Splatoon could be catching up to SSB's total sales in Japan.

Nintendo probably should start thinking about more content for Splatoon in December if they want to really reaffirm and fulfill this prediction. Another major update to bring extra buzz just in time for the holidays.

Should we expect a good PS4 boost this week since it has 3 games coming out and the PS4 now comes bundle with Bloodborne?

I think that DQMJ3 announcement pretty much confirm that SE and DQ haven't abandoned the 3DS as a viable platform (not meaning that DQXI will be there), that the 3DS, for being such an "old" and "saturated" hardware is still receiving a very solid support from Japanese third parties, due to its unbeateable success in Japan this generation, and that its 2016 (don't think MJoker3 will be a '15 title, but who knows?) is shaping up pretty nicely.
All of those aspects imho could (everything can happen) bold well for the NX launch (if it will be "at least somehow" a 3DS successor launched in the second half of 2016 in Japan)

Why would anyone think that SE abandoned the 3DS as viable platform for DQ ? Because they also release DQ games on other systems ?

it was a topic last week: not only that, but due to DQ game release also on the PS environment, the entire third party support to 3ds and NX (meant as a 3ds successor) was heavily jeopardized

SE support of 3DS is no indication of future NX support.

To be perfectly honest, all DQ 3DS games have been under development for quite a long time, ie before any likely agreement between SQEX and Sony. A new DQM game was announced to be in development more than one year ago and DQVIII might have been under development since a couple of years (after VII was done).

01./00. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: White Dog Squad <ACT> (Level 5) - 427.005 / NEW
02./00. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team <ACT> (Level 5) - 276.344 / NEW

Dengeki is reporting a 70% sell-through, but it seems an average of both versions...
Probably Red Cat version sell-through is lower and White Dog version is higher.

Well okay...though i dont understand why people are so narrowminded....there is a state between all or nothing-

...so ? Its not like they just started development on Playstation DQ games - these games have been in development for years as well. And which kind of Sony agreement ? There is nothing prevent SE from putting DQ games on other systems.

Yeah the "It's all for Sony!" argument I don't get.

Yokai Watch sold a gigantic number of copies. DQM:SL is one of the biggest mobile games in Japan. It's the perfect time to roll out DQM and try to push the series to be as large as humanly possible.

This is the type of game they should be pushing to move from a 1 million seller to a 3 million seller, and the target platform for that is self evident.

By comparison, the target platforms for Minecraft and Musou are also already drawn for Japan (though you would expect Builders to be ported to mobile and PC at some point), and they're simply following the trend there as well.

They launched a new mobile game a month ago as well (a new version of Monster Parade which is definitely a best fit as a social title).

Musou yes, but I'd hesitate to say that much consideration has really gone into which Japanese platforms specifically Minecraft should be targeting for the region itself. Using this logic only a year ago the target console in Japan for Minecraft was Xbox 360.

Musou yes, but I'd hesitate to say that much consideration has really gone into which Japanese platforms specifically Minecraft should be targeting for the region itself. Using this logic only a year ago the target console in Japan for Minecraft was Xbox 360.
Given the amount of memory games like Minecraft tend to use, the 3DS would be problematic.

Consider how torn down Pocket Edition had to be when they were using low memory phones.

I wasn't really speaking to 3DS specifically, although Vu Bui didn't indicate any technological hurdles keeping Minecraft off 3DS. He said there's no real reason, it just hasn't happened yet.

With the way the anime looks it wouldn't suprise me if it gets a pretty hefty bump. I Expect GE2:RB PSV to manage to outsell GE2 PSV when all is said and done. Resurrection will also help by bringing newcomers.

Well, when they ported it to phones at first, they simply tore out a ton of features and heavily limited the world size, so they're pretty open to changing the game for each platform they go to.

I'm not sure what the actual design spec of Dragon Quest Builders is though.

Do you feel there's a better platform fit? Mobile seems obvious given the game is always a best seller on the Japanese paid charts, though they probably don't want to sell a $7 version immediately to compete with that.

PC is also a well known home for Minecraft, though I'm under the impression this market isn't super large in Japan.

As silly of a statement as this is: WiiU.

Why? It has no official minecraft equivalent to actually compete against (especially if you factor in global considerations). Large family audience (see: Disney, Skylanders, and others; globally applicable). Suitable hardware (unlike the 3DS) and the GamePad would actually be useful for once (see: Mario Maker). [PC and mobile, are down the road inevitabilities if you ask me.]

But, again, a dead console doesn't help to serve the narrative of "reviving consoles*" in Japan.
