Which ones? Here in the UK (where the stories regarding lack of WiiU support seem to have originated), they have just struck a deal with Tesco (largest supermarket), although their situation with Asda (second biggest) is still up in the air.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/nintendo-teams-up-with-tesco-for-wii-u-fight-back/0121777

The largest games retailer still also has decent WiiU sections and various promotions etc, not to mention the online sales.

WiiU is selling terribly but it's not exactly the same as the Ouya etc. Yet. ;-)

/apologies for off-topic etc
Dude, the Wii U situation here is not looking rosy at all. Even in it's weakest month, the PS3 sells more software than the Wii U has sold all year. In it's strongest month, the PS3 sold 7 times more software than the Wii U had sold all year. The 360 makes it look even worse. Hell, even the Wii is shifting notably more (4x as much) software.

/also apologises for being slightly off-topic.

I agree, I'm not disputing that but it's not immediate danger of not being stocked by all retailers in any one EU country, that's what the post I was replying to said.

Someone on the N Europa forum said they picked up the Tesco Christmas gift catalogue and there is no mention of the wii u at all.

There is no comparison because the Wii was successful and Wii U is not, not by any metric or comparison. There is also no comparison between development time and development cost, with the Wii they worked with much of the same tech they developed back in 2001, with the Wii U they have already delayed several games and clearly have trouble with HD development.

The Wii did not bow out with a huge software range, its last 2-3 years saw a very spotty release schedule, its one of the most common criticisms of the company and one of the key reasons why so many are surprised that the Wii U launched with so little, the idea was that they eased off on development on the Wii in order to focus on the Wii U, instead the first year of the Wii U has so far been very barren.

They will finish their projects, hope for a turn around and wash their hands and drop the Wii brand next gen, for many obvious reasons as it has no pull anymore. It makes no logical sense to pull the plug now in 2013 when they already invested time and money into several projects, but after they are done and things havent improved they have absolutely no incentive to sink more money into it
The Wiis first-party software is great, that's what I was getting at. If you bought a Wii for Nintendo games, you got Nintendo games. I'm not disputing the release schedule was 'spotty' but, looking back, the first-party library is solid.

If they don't do that for the WiiU (and they haven't so far) then any future home console launch is knackered, simple as that. They need to keep supporting it in order to keep a future chance in the home console business alive. If they just abandon it after all current projects are released (say in 18 months time) then they might as well not bother with a home console again.

Hm? Japanese 3rd parties are all in on the 3ds, it gets all the genres the DS got plus the genres the PSP got. In the west dedicated handhelds appeal as little to 3rd parties as they always have of course.
All the genres? Nope. At least, not for some very niche genres. For example, the Visual Novel output on 3DS is pitiful at best, as it's one of the few things Sony managed to keep on its handhelds (take Danganronpa for example... which is kinda ironical, since Spike-Chunsoft made the Zero Escape series multiplatform, but not that one).

It's true most of 3rd-party publishers are on 3DS, but not all of them. And of course, there's all the publishers that jumped/are jumping into the mobile bandwagon

Currently, 3DS have 8 million seller game. So, there were 4 million sellers last year namely MK7, NSMB, ACNL and M3DL.
Does that mean that 2013 saw more million-sellers than both 2011 and 2012 combined? If yes, that's mighty impressive, and another proof that 2014 won't be nearly as good as 2013... unless Nintendo launched a new model or something along those lines.

I think 'stores will stop carrying it' is a very real possibility. That or give it such limited space that they might as well have stopped carrying it. It's already been marginalised everywhere that I shop. Still, this is a conversation for the PAL thread. On that note, I wish we had a monthly thread that looked at global sales (as much as is possible with the paucity of data available).

I don't get what this has to do with his post...?
Huh, I didn't think it was particularly tough to follow. Shit software sales increase the likelihood that retailers will reduce shelf space.

Hey, I haven't seen the catalogue, only the news stories (negative and positive), I was only replying to the idea that it's in danger of not being stocked on store shelves in some EU countries.

Im absolutely not disputing that it's sales are terribad all over (and so is any hope of recovery), but I am disputing that it's in danger of not being available country-wide in the UK.

9 actually:

AC ~4m (2012)
MH4 ~3m (2013)
Pokemon ~2m (2013)
NSMB ~2m (2012)
MK7 ~2m (2011)
MH3U ~1.9m (2011)
SM3DL ~1.9m (2011)
Tomodachi ~1.5m (2013)
DQ7 ~1.2m (2013)

Also Luigi (2013) will probably hit 1m by the end of this year (900k+ atm).

Right, they are awful, but what was the last piece of hardware to actually get dropped completely there? I agree it will probably be marginalized to the point of almost being non existent but I still think it will be carried. Also yeah sorry for the OT.

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
Among other reasons, Dengeki gives us sales numbers for titles that are too low to debut with numbers on Media Create / Famitsu. So, their liberal reporting allows us to track sales that we wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
No. All three trackers are inherently trustworthy. However, they have quirks that make some people prefer one over the others:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Tracks about 3,600 retail stores / chains
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

Stores not carrying WiiU is already happening on a minor scale and will continue if the situation doesn't improve dramatically during/after the holidays. GC saw a lot of stores drop support and it even had more of a presence than he WiiU has managed thus far. But yeah back to sales in the Japanese context:

Does that mean that 2013 saw more million-sellers than both 2011 and 2012 combined? If yes, that's mighty impressive, and another proof that 2014 won't be nearly as good as 2013... unless Nintendo launched a new model or something along those lines.
Yeah 2014 is going to be a lesser year than 2012/13 for 3DS...possibly even 2011. I like to think of 2012/3 as the prime years for the 3DS much as 2006/7 was for DS. DS saw a noticeable drop in sales (and Nintendo output) by 2008 and unless Nintendo still has a few tricks up their sleeves I expect the same to follow in 2014 -- especially when they get into the flow of HD development and try to salvage as much as they can from the WiiU wreck.

EDIT: Looking at Dengeki charts, looks like Media Create may have over-tracked GTAV sales, and Famitsu 3DS hardware?
Also that Disney game will easily cross 300k LTD.

ok looking at the dengeki chart is making me think, with not one of those budget vita rereleases making even the bottom end of the chart i'm inclined to believe to overwhelming majority of these 60k vita sales are not new vita owners but simply people replacing with the new model

can easily see that Disney game 500k+ when all is said and done, should be a lock for 400k by the end of the year

I don't think the absence of Best software in the chart means anything whatsoever. Best software regularly doesn't chart. Best software for the PS3 not charting doesn't mean all the people buying it are doing so to get the ugly new model.

Not sure why you're so reluctant to eat your crow like everyone else has. Yummy, yummy. It's not like it won't be back in the doldrums again soon.

Your schtick is tired, Chris. PSP still has a bunch of releases lined up for next year.
Until you get over your middle age crisis I won't argue with you. Do a research how much PSP software sales collapsed this year and how much more they' ll drop next year and we'll see if it will be dead or not.

I've already said i'm impressed by the numbers it posted, yeah best software doesn't normally chart but not even a thousand new vita owners thought they'd pick up such a flag ship title as soul sacrifice? implies to me there aren't as many new vita owners as the figures initially suggest

9 actually:

AC ~4m (2012)
MH4 ~3m (2013)
Pokemon ~2m (2013)
NSMB ~2m (2012)
MK7 ~2m (2011)
MH3U ~1.9m (2011)
SM3DL ~1.9m (2011)
Tomodachi ~1.5m (2013)
DQ7 ~1.2m (2013)

Also Luigi (2013) will probably hit 1m by the end of this year (900k+ atm).
Oh, yeah. I totally forgot MH3U. So that makes it, 1 for 2011, 4(?) for 2012 and currently 4 on 2013.

Dangan-Ronpa 1-2: Reload would have contributed to the 60K PSVita sales.
Yeah, even if the opening figures are lower than Sen no Kiseki, it's possible that just general awareness for the anime would bring in new buyers. But more importantly, I think the abundance of colours also helped a lot. I think there will be a sustained level of decent Vita sales for the rest of the year, honestly.

I dunno about 500k but 400k is very possible as it has shown impressive legs + should probably get a small boost in the holidays. Youkai Watch is also showing that a 300k LTD isn't out of reach. Wonder if the anime will give it a boost, but that's still far off iirc.

Or they picked it up second hand. Or some bought the 'best' release and some bought the original. Or they bought it digitally.

The second hand market is pretty big in Japan afaik. Not surprising at all.

Nintendo must be passed, all these WiiU bombs might have been potential games for their selling next gen portable.

Wonder what titles like AC will do for WiiU when they are clearly more popular on their handhelds. Was the right call to have Smash also on 3DS.

I must have missed it amongst all the repeated "well clearly these are just all just people buying to replace their fucked up OLEDs" pushing.

It just reminds me of all those silly comments about how the 360 is only selling well because of RROD'd systems.

All the absence of those games implies is that the people who bought the Vita this week didn't buy these old game re-releases in any significant quantity at retail.
It had new releases this week that one could buy with their new system.

That doesn't mean it won't drop like a rock next week, and see itself back down in the sub-5K zone either.

i'm not saying absolutely none bought it, i'm not saying there are absolutely no new vita owners, but I would've thought if there were really 60k new vita owners that I could've managed to hit 1k copies for the best version

personal guesses here but i'd think about 20k new 40k "upgrades"

be interesting to know if anyone in japan can tell us if there's been any noticeable increase in the number of vita's in 2nd hand shops?

well we do know there is a problem with OLEDs going dodgy (how widespread though who knows) so that may have contributed at least a bit, with any revision there will always be a significant number of people replacing rather than new buyers i'm just inclined to believe its a higher proportion than normally (not that we know what the normal proportion is)

and also while yes the RROD comments about the 360 were a bit silly but it would also be silly to suggest it didn't have a noticeable effect on the systems hardware sales, same as with the ps2, don't think I know anyone that didn't end buying multiple of them over the years

This is hilarious.
We know. It's not widespread.

People are not upgrading because OLED screens are going bad, because they aren't.

SMT X FE would also make far more sense on 3DS especially with SMT4 and FE:A being on the system...

Well with the low WiiU sales I foresee a lot of re-releases of its high profile games on future systems and indeed the handheld*

*fantasizing mode* *(Which should be, as mentioned by others here in other threads, a hybrid handheld / console, since it just makes too much sense for where Nintendo and the market is now. A handheld system (per def a better sales pitch at the moment for Nintendo) with a dock that hooks it to the tv as well (would cover the need to be in the living room, local multiplayer with controllers.) The next-gen handheld will provide HD of course, maybe Wii U level graphics, and since Nintendo stopped participating in the graphics race that will be good enough for the big screen then. All resources into one system that covers two grounds and is likely to at least get a grip on the Japanese market).

I will say it again: Why would anybody in Japan buy a Wii U right now when there are bundles being advertised to be coming out in the future? The Wii U is not doing well by any standard, but this week's result is not a cause for concern.

the only thing I can imagine is its people that really don't want those games and have found retailers selling the system a bit cheaper (or basic models)

otherwise are there really 3.5k really dumb japanese guys

I'll need to look more before making any conclusions, but...

There are a ton of used vitas at the book-off and Wanpaku stores near my house and the amount of money they will give you for selling one has dropped. Same with the WiiU. If retailers have more stock than they need they pay less for hardware.

You would get almost nothing for trading in a 360 or OG Wii for example. Stores already have more than they can sell in the near term.

I'll need to talk to some of my friends who work at the store but I would guess there were a lot if people "trading up". Considering the screen is not as good on the new handheld that seems strange to me, but whatever.

Same thing happened when the DSLL came out. Stores were flooded with DSi units and they weren't even offering to buy regular DS lites or OG DS units.

Just my 2 yen.

Because they are not being advertised well. Unless you go into a specialty shop or belong to a gaming forum I doubt you would know they were coming.

Biggest travesty was this...

27./17. [PS3] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle # <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.08.29} (¥7.980) - 2.173 / 452.585 <80-100%> (-28%)

...But I suppose they'll be happy with over 450k sold.

Because they are not being advertised well. Unless you go into a specialty shop or belong to a gaming forum I doubt you would know they were coming.
It's obviously not the same with the 3DS, is it Viink? Iwata and co. have basically put the console side of things off until "further notice..."

It IS a cause for concern. It's reached that point where no one thing can "fix" the problem and I have doubts as to whether the bundles will do any good. It's going to take a combo of good shit for a good couple of months to get the WiiU out of its rut.

Nintendo will probably finish all currently started and annouced Wii U games but i doubt they will greenlight any new projects and studios that finish working on them will be moved to 3DS or working on next gen handheld launch.
This is completely unrealistic. I think franchises like Animal Crossing or Mario Party are a dead cert for Wii U releases and after the fan reaction to DKCTF I strongly suspect we'll also see a new Metroid from Retro down the line. If Nintendo did what you're suggesting they'd have no Wii U games after 2014 except for Zelda. They'd have a pretty empty 2014 too really.

Well of course - after all this is scenario of quietly discontinuing Wii U while saving everything that can be saved from costs sunken in software development.
