When the digital sales start hitting impressive enough numbers to really make a difference, we wont need to speculate, trust me. Sony and the developer/publishers will make it known.
I think it depends on what "impressive" is. From what i know, we very rarely get DD sales numbers across the board (not just regarding PS Store). But i'm sure that many games still sell great on DD (this is not an arguement about PS Vita DD sales).

I think based on the info we have I think it:s far more ridiculous to assume that [they aren`t even a statistical blip]

Without reliable numbers it just can't be part of the usual sales age discussion so it's factually non-existing to said discussion. You can start an own thread about it though.

Edit: caught you editing your post. ;)

A "real" XV is a game that's designed from the ground up to be a mainline Final Fantasy, with consideration of the features and depth expected in such an entry, the amount of visual pizazz expected, and sufficient hewing to the genre conventions of the series to play to expectations. (Arguably the entire problem with XIII is that people don't feel like it met all of these conditions.)

Versus obviously doesn't meet the first and its gameplay is very straightforwardly not what the gameplay of "Final Fantasy" as a series is -- it's not even the same genre of game.

(But also, on top of that, a "real XV" would be a game created and announced after the whole FNCF, with full knowledge of where SE started going wrong by their fans, rather than a repackaged effort conceptualized right in the heart of that whole disaster.)

Versus was announced like this

The concept and thinking behind Versus would not be possible in a standard numbered Final Fantasy title, Nomura responded. However, Kitase jumped in, assuring that Versus is not just a side-story, as it has some of what makes a numbered FF game what it is. However, he added, "With Versus, we are trying out a type of adventure that we couldn't do in the numbered series."

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/710/710761p2.html

Maybe that's what they need right now. We have seen so little about Versus that I don't think renaming it to FFXV would be a bad option. They could've even changed the battle system to make it closer to "mainline" battle systems

And talking about FFXIII-2, perhaps S-E shouldn't have released two full-priced (7700-7900Y), not mainline but bigger scale than typical spinoff FF games less than two months apart.

Well, putting aside my expectation that Versus will come out as half-baked as the last three numbered FFs... that quote also specifically says "this is game we couldn't do as a numbered entry." If those differences are good, I don't think it'd help their cause to shoehorn traditional mechanics in their place. (And if they're not good, the game itself probably shouldn't be made any more prominent in the first place.)

I'm actually pro-renaming the game, but it'd be much more sensible to follow the Agito -> Type-0 route there. Call it Final Fantasy REQUIEM or something, don't rework it to be more traditional, sell it as a standalone game, and then find out how people respond to it disconnected from both the expectations of the mainline series and the millstone that is the XIII branding.

And to expand on my point here -- has any other videogame series ever announced a spinoff game and then retroactively upgraded it to "main series"/numbered status with a pre-release rename/rebrand? I couldn't think of a single example.

Wasn't Final Fantasy IX like this? Perhaps it wasn't announced to the public as a spinoff though.

You're way off base here.

I am sorry to disappoint you. My read is that they achieved decent (mediocre) sales, half those of their most substitutable competitor, and it took an aggressive BF bundle. This may have been a surprise on the upside relative to disastrous expectations, but it's nothing to remember fondly. It's also somewhat likely that PS3 will be the only console to experience M-O-M declines for December, since they've stubbornly avoided any meaningful discounting this month, and have not restocked the BF bundle. Anyway, that's a topic for next month's NPD thread rather than this month's MC thread.

I've been in Europe where FFXIII sold 2 ml copies, and I've noticed in NA it selling other 2 ml copied (shipped or not, we're close to that). I've seen also a spin off like Dissidia on a dead console managing to do great sales in both territories, and it was called Final Fantasy. I've seen also mediocre games like DAII surviving. The point is: we (westerns) buy everything, thus how can a Final Fantasy flop so hard here too?

Btw, as a super fanboy I'm actually concerned lol. Especially because I love the new Final Fantasy (XII, XIII and so on) and the direction they're taking with the series. God, it'll be so bad if it really bombs T.T

Every Japanese Square Enix games (FF games or not) that was released this year and the second half of last year bombed real hard. Dissidia 012 and FF IV bombed so hard to a degree that SE is considering not to bring Type-0 to EU and NA.

I can see FF XIII-2 bombing real hard.

The problem here is inherent in the fact that doing that is a statement that Square-Enix can't even produce a real Final Fantasy XV.
What is a real FFXV though? XIII already had very little in common gameplay wise to the most popular entries in the franchise.

Okay I can buy that.
62% of shipment? Ouch...
It sounds like Used Copy Christmas is gonna be early this year!

9 and 10 were announced simultaneously (10 at the time had the PlayOnline crap all up in its grill) and IIRC the tone of the announcement was something like Final Fantasy IX is the summation of the classic Final Fantasy series, while Final Fantasy X is the FUTURE OF FINAL FANTASY!!!

The closest thing that comes to mind immediately is Assassin's Creed 3DS being turned into Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

I'll think on this a bit more though, since I think it's an interesting general question.

I feel like if DD sales become the majority, we might start getting statistics from them on a more regular basis. That could just be wishful thinking though.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan CEO Hiroshi Kawano spoke briefly about PlayStation Vita sales during a press conference for Gung Ho Entertainment's Ragnarok Odyssey yesterday (see Famitsu.com's report here).

Kawano described the system's first week sales of 321,407 units as "a figure in accordance with expectations." However, he added, "Games and peripherals are selling extremely well. Sales of the download versions of titles are exceeding expectations."

Media Create yesterday reported that Sony and its third parties had sold around 300,000 units of software over the first two days of the system's launch. This equalled a 0.92 attach rate (0.92 games per system sold) which is lower than the launch attach rates for 3DS and PSP. However, Media Create's sales figures do not take download sales into account.

Without reliable numbers it just can't be part of the usual sales age discussion so it's factually non-existing to said discussion. You can start an own thread about it though.

Edit: caught you editing your post. ;)

Something incredibly obvious I was missing; Media create themselves do this Fluffy discussion in this week`s analysis, they say that based on DD sales the tie ratio is probably similar to past launches.

This is the media create thread, if the media create weekly report is talking about dd sales, makes sense to discuss it here.

What's there to talk about? "Games are available online. Some undisclosed number of people are buying games from there."

What else?

I am sorry to disappoint you. My read is that they achieved decent (mediocre) sales, half those of their most substitutable competitor, and it took an aggressive BF bundle. This may have been a surprise on the upside relative to disastrous expectations, but it's nothing to remember fondly. It's also somewhat likely that PS3 will be the only console to experience M-O-M declines for December, since they've stubbornly avoided any meaningful discounting this month, and have not restocked the BF bundle. Anyway, that's a topic for next month's NPD thread rather than this month's MC thread.

You think the PS3 is going to sell < 900K in December NPD? That's absolutely crazy.

If an extreme hw scenario becomes reality next week we will laugh for years.

It looks Orochi 2 suffers from Musou saturation

Nothing about SD Gundam? Or Inazuma?

What's this extreme hw scenario you are talking about?

Which scenario ? 3DS outselling all other plattforms combined ?

That has already happened last weeks...especially the one before this.
The only really extreme scenario would be...

...Outselling x2 all the other consoles.
If he's talking about this.

Famitsu had a feature on Nintendo's potential holiday performance

3DS Hardware Predictions
There are also 3 people making predictions for 3DS hardware sales in November-December. One guy from SMBC Nikko Securities thinks that 3DS can potentially sell 2.0-2.5 million in 2 months. Expects Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and MH3G to perform strongly. Zelda SS and Just Dance Wii will be the Wii's big titles to pay attention to.

Someone from Bic Camera in Yurakucho (Tokyo) has more realistic predictions of around 1 million and expects MH3G to do very well because of the big sales of the PSP games and the fact that Tri G preorders have exceeded MH3 Wii pre-orders by quite a margin. Inazuma Eleven Go is also expected to do well.

Finally, a professor from Ritsumeikan University thinks 3DS hardware will sell around 1 million. The first 4 months of the system saw sales of 1.3 million. For systems like PSP, first year November sales usually rise by 1.3-1.6 times, while December ranges from 3.5 to 5.76 times the normal amount. That leaves 200K in November and 800K in December for 3DS (a rough estimate). He also expects the 2 Mario games, MH3G and Inazuma Eleven Go to surpass 500K each.

Actual sales so far (Media Create): Oct 31 - Dec 18 (2 more weeks still to go)

3DS - 1,390,346

It looks like the professor and the Bic Camera guy will both be off by more than a million units. Pretty horrendously bad predictions.

The SMBC Nikko guy looks like he was right on though!

Cannot wait for your stores impressions report, Chris.

The only thing missing from The Revenge of Sales-Age, I think, is Vinnk's triumphant return. He teased a month or two back, but I haven't heard anything since. Did I miss any Village posts?

Also that Mario visual chart -- isn't 3D Land big enough now that we can start regularly seeing it?

I feel like if DD sales become the majority, we might start getting statistics from them on a more regular basis. That could just be wishful thinking though.

that obviously wont happen for a long time... change takes time. i guess it was lucky for sony to try out PSPGo, or they could have made some really stupid decisions with Vita, based on all the smart analysts predicting how traditional physical media will die.

I'm not suggesting DD is boosting Vita software sales, but I don't see why it is out of the norm to think DD might be taking up more focus. If I had a choice, I'd rather buy Vita games off of PSN than at retail. Of course it depends all upon pricing.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

This was before the Vita release though. But lets just wait for Chris's response.

sure.. it is probably not a lot more than 10% though, at least in Japan.

The problem here is inherent in the fact that doing that is a statement that Square-Enix can't even produce a real Final Fantasy XV.

You understand that FFIX wasn't supposed to be a mainline FF at first either? They weren't even able to make a real FFIX! Although the decline started here...

Thirteen flew over the cuckoo's nest
Every Japanese Square Enix games (FF games or not) that was released this year and the second half of last year bombed real hard. Dissidia 012 and FF IV bombed so hard to a degree that SE is considering not to bring Type-0 to EU and NA.

That's PSP fault and only PSP's one. To a degree that CAPCOM will not take Mh3rd here. In Japan though, both 012 and FF4 Compilation sold well considering the first is just an expansion and the second one the usual re-re-re-re-enhanced.

Type-0 is already confirmed for western release anyway. Probably not for PSP though, cause as I pointed out before you're doomed to fail if you produce on one. Guess what? Even if your not Final Fantasy!
