Metal Gear Solid V PC Performance Thread

What's there to explain? The Evil Within is an outstanding looking game.

Ground Zeroes and MGSV in general just look okay, its cross gen roots shine through. Which is why I'm disappointed a 280X doesn't easily run it at 60fps without any hitches.

Well amd got fucked on this one. Poor performance and optimization for the red team :(

i guess my pc wont handle a smooth gameplay, i was torn on whether to get it or not

AMD FX- 8320
geforce 650 1gb
16gb ram
The game offers an option to lock 30fps if you don't have the performance. Your pc should be able to manage that on close to max settings.

As expected from the OP, maxed settings on my 970 and 4690k (both stock) worked wonderfully. There was a moment when the game lagged up badly for a few seconds but that was most likely due to some background stuff. I found GeForce waiting for me when I ended the game. HEY, WE FOUND SOME SETTINGS FOR YOU

i5 4670k (no oc)
450 GTS
8GB ram
Win 8.1

Mix of medium and high settings("out of the box"-settings) at 1080p - runs around 30-40fps.

Pleasantly surprised- Didn't expect my old budget gpu to run it at anything other than low.

i5-4690k
8 GB RAm
GTX 770 4GB

Running everything on high at 1080p, very satisfied

You could really go for everything on Extra High. I have the same card (the 2GB version) and I get 60 fps on 1080p with everything at Extra High..

Personally I DSR from 2560 x 1440 to 1080p and cap my framerate at 40 with everything still set to Extra High, but that's personal preference.

why are you dropping down to 50fps with a 980? That's pretty weird. Is that bad when you're not recording? I only have a 970 and it never goes that low.

Yeah the guy who has the 980, my 770 outperforms that. Something's up there. I get 55-60 in the same scene overlooking the base and you're getting down to the low 50s. Try the new drivers if you don't have them yet.

he should try disabling if the steam overly while running fraps, I think it fucks up with the performance somehow. it helped with mine when I was getting constant drops to 55fps.

No idea, I'm overclocked with temps under 70c. Everything else runs fine too.

Sounds like it might be your Overclock, typically if you see a decrease in performance instead of better performance it means it is unstable and you should back it off now to stock clocks.

Figured out what was causing my game to plummet in FPS and GPU usage, my R9 280X was throttling due to not getting enough powerdraw.

As i was running a an OC profile and I'd forgot to adjust the power level amount (only switched to AMD about 3 days ago) the game was maxing out the amount of power the card was allowed to use, as such it was dropping the boost clock down to compensate and this was giving me very sporadic FPS and GPU usage. As soon as i made the power level +20% this went away and my boost clock stays normal now and my FPS is much better, basically with my power level at 0% and in game settings at a mix of extreme and high in the landing area i was dropping to 30fps a lot and my GPU usage and boost clock was going up and down, with the power level at +20% the boost clock and GPU usage stay normal and my FPS is only dropping to 50fps now.

Much happier now, the game is running loads better and i was able to increase the settings to make it look even better.

wut. High settings are equivalent to the PS4 game.

I was mistaken, well, mostly. From DF's Face-Off

"The upgrade from console is often tangible, with PS4 and Xbox One's settings a match for PC at its default settings (high across the board, but with shadows and texture filtering at medium). An exception to this rule is in model detail, where the PC's lowest preset still aces both consoles in terms of tree and object draw distances, plus LODs across buildings. This is easily the most vivid upgrade for PC users, gifting higher-end machines a richer, denser looking scene as standard."

I made my earlier statement based on Nvidia's performance guide. Their PS4 screenshots don't hold up compared to the PC's low settings screenshots. This is probably because the model detail setting is the most important visual upgrade for the PC and that setting alone is better than the consoles on low.

Everything works excellently, i have rock-solid 60fps all the time, with very rare drops to 59, no stuttering, not anything, but i have this awful screen tearing that appears always in the lower part of the screen.
I've tried everything, VSync is always on ofc, i tried forcing it with external tools, i even lowered some options and/or dropped to 30fps. Nothing. The screen tearing remains.
Anyone encountered the same and/or found a solution?

Use borderless fullscreen option.

Use borderless fullscreen option.

Funny you mentioned it. I had tried that too. With Borderless the screen tearing appeared every 2-4 seconds. I use Fullscreen and i have minimized the screen tearing a lot, but it's still there.
Thanks for your answer anyway.

2GB 670

(No overclocks)

Flat 60 FPS at 1080P, no drops, max settings.
How? I have a 680, 8GB, i5 3.33 and its 50-60fps on everything max, can't get a constant 60fps - which I'm looking for.
Which option(s) can't I turn down a notch without losing too much beauty but that'll give me 60fps? Screen filtering?

Ouch... That's almost exactly the game play performance I get completely maxed at 1440p with a 970. (but without Shadow Play) The dips are all to the same lows at the same places.

How? I have a 680, 8GB, i5 3.33 and its 50-60fps on everything max, can't get a constant 60fps - which I'm looking for.

I pick up about 10fps changing Screen Filtering from Extra High to High at 1440p. (No idea how much at 1080p because I'm already hitting the frame rate cap on max settings.) Helps that I don't like the Extra High effect much.
Visually, Extra High SSAO and Shadows over Extra High Screen Filtering is a no-brainer for me.

Yeh just tried with Screen Filtering on High, and got 95% of the time constant 60fps, not bad

Wow in the day light missions, my 290x performance TANKS!

Everything on Extra High except SSAO on High.

Night missions i get 60fps with 50fps on load enemy encounters

Day missions i get 40fps with 30fps on load enemy encounters.

AMD need to patch this shit. Heck PS4/One are AMD gpus ffs!

Would highly suggest turning off Screen Filtering entirely. You lose the DOF completely but the whole image becomes much sharper and you can then apply AA via injector or drivers pretty easily. If you're scraping at 60 FPS, it will also probably allow you to get solid 60 without further compromises. The depth of field could be nice but its just not implemented in the best way so I personally prefer to leave it off entirely in exchange for a squeaky clean image quality.

Ah thanks for that! Looks much better.

Don't you lose DOF in cutscenes that way? That's a big loss for a game with well-directed clips.

Konami should either tone down the DOF in gameplay or they should provide an option to disable DOF, but only during gameplay.

Restarted the game, I did not really notice a difference.

Same here... and it looks like crossfire isn't working either I:

Performance should be similar to Ryse son of Rome since the consoles have AMD GPU's, and thus perform well on AMD GPU's.

Well I played it last night on my laptop (gtx 765m). Nvidia experience suggests 1080p most high done very high...... I think ooookkkkkk... I'll give it ago.

On main menu I get 10 fps lol. OK I'll put it on lowest settings... 15 fps.....

Ohhhh... Download beta drivers... Stick it in nvidia experience settings again and I get 50-60 fps on menu. Wow.

In game it hovers between 40-60.

Just dropped it all to high, shodows to medium and then res to 900p and I get almost solid 60.

Looks great, runs great. Awesome job.

90 mins later I complete it (lol but yeah there is still tons of side missions to do).

i7 3960x @ 4.2
24GB DDR3 1600 Quad-Channel
GTX 660Ti SC
Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB

Settings on Extra High with SSAO - High and Screen Filtering - High.

60FPS locked. Game runs well and looks good. Also tested on an R7 260X with the same settings except for Shadows set to Low.

Game runs great, I'm just disappointed about the 60fps cap. I have a GTX 970 and a 144Hz gsync monitor and it would have been nice to get the higher frame-rates.

The game runs very well on my desktop. Getting 55-60 fps with everything on extra high.

Desktop Specs:
-AMD FX 8350
-770 4gb
-8gb DDR3
-Installed on SSD

The game runs terribly on my MSI GE60. 10-13 fps with everything on high and low. No idea why.

Laptop Specs:
-i7-4700HQ

Guess I found out my answer. I'll give it a try.

Edit: It worked! Set everything to high and I'm getting 60fps on my laptop.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that the game was running fine on my C2Duo, I'd like to add an addendum to that. The post-credits cut-scene runs at a very low framerate and is unresponsive. Took me a while to skip it, but once I did everything was a-ok.

I'm giving this game 2 thumbs up when it comes to the performance. 1440p and still a locked 60 maxed out with my 970. Don't know if it can handle that when it rains, but in the daytime map I never saw a single drop.

If anyones interested I made two videos in shadowplay running on a GeForce 660ti and an AMD FX 8350. One video was all high settings @ 1080p. I got pretty much smooth 60 on that. The other was all max settings with varying fps from 38 to 60. Sometimes dipping way below that. But was still super playable.

Has anyone tried it on a semi-competent gaming laptop?

I have a 860m Maxwell with an i7 4710m, what should I expect?

I have those same specs.

GTX 860m
i7-4710MQ
8GB RAM

1080p and all settings on High, with screen filtering set to Extra High for better sharpness, fetches ~45-50 fps. I'm very impressed with the results considering the image quality.

I give it my recommendation if you're on the fence about getting it or not.
