Metroid: Zero Mission coming to NA VC tomorrow

What a timely release, only 19 months after it was put up on the Japanese VC! Lets see if I can muster up enough enthusiasm to dig my Wii U out of storage so I can buy it.

Damn purists.
This, so much.

Even this would help improve the "where the hell am i" feeling that pervades the game.
This "where the hell am I" feeling is exactly why it's bloody brilliant. Wanting to correct this is like wanting to correct Super Metroid's lack of obvious clues.

Confusion is a good thing. If you were an explorer on an alien planet, you'd probably be confused. Places would look the same. I consider it a flaw if I'm playing an exploration game and I don't get lost at least a few times. You should feel like you're exploring. Not going along an exact route that the game creator wants you to take as if it's an amusement park ride. You should have to put some effort to find out where to go.

That's one of the reasons why Metroid 1 > ZM.
Exactly this, even though Zero Mission has its own merits (I dislike everything after Mother Brain, though).

I actually just listened to it yesterday. A lot of the discussion at the end is actually really hilarious in retrospect, especially with the discussion about the future of Metroid.

One thing that stuck out to me was how Jeremy, Bob and Jose all made it painfully clear they did not want to discuss Other M at all.

I think it was designed for a speedrun contest that they held in Japan that they never got around to holding in the West (if they ever planned on it in the first place). So it was never officially revealed for any territory outside of Japan, but it still should have been a default unlock.
Metroid Zero Mission wasn't the only first party game from that epoch to do that. Mario Kart Double Dash and Fire Emblem also have some codes to make odd passwords appear that were used in Japanese contests.

Super, Prime 1 and this essentially represent a trio of children that I could never bring myself to pick as being better than the other two. Absolutely brilliant game from beginning to end, and I don't think I have any problems mentioning that it's the only remake that's reached the same standard that REmake set and no other remake has done since.

You'd get really confused storywise if you played Super before ZM.

Oh shit, really? So it's best not to view it [ZM] as a prequel to Super, but as the actual start of the saga and play that, then Super?

And, wait, don't the Prime games take place in-between Super and Fusion?

I'm afraid to ask but seeing as I do own it I might as well - where does Other M fit into all of this? Does it have any redeeming qualities?

well, all that delay to just randomly drop it in a regular day.

thanks Obama... i mean NoA.

Metroid timeline:

ZM (or the NES game. ZM replaces it story-wise) -> Prime 1 (Pinball is a retelling of mp1 so it can go here at the same time) -> Prime Hunters -> Prime 2 -> Prime 3 -> M2: Return of Samus -> Super -> Other M (creates plotholes so it's better to ignore it) -> Fusion

once you view the prime series as a group inserted between M1 and M2, things look a lot simpler.

That was great.

Though, the best part now is that they preface the discussion with "this is before E3 by the way, so we don't know if they announce anything" and then they go on to speculate that the next Metroid will probably be radically different, be made by Next Level Games, and that fans would probably balk if they do something new.

This is a remake of the first Metroid, so you can just start here then play the rest in release order. Other M is worthwhile.

I love this game even better than Fusion. I am glad we are getting some VC love with these older GBA releases, but I am unsatisfied with the filter options Nintendo offers. Even with the perfect pixel option Nintendo provides I still miss proper filter options for these older GBA games. I am not quite satisfied with either of the two options as one is overly pixelated and the other option makes things too blurry.

Oh shit, really?
No, don't listen to that nonsense.

Pretty much all of the Metroid games save for Fusion and Other M and extremely light on story content and generally self-contained (even if there is a thin semblance of a continuity). There only benefit to playing them in any kind of order is simply to see how the series has evolved (or devolved, in some cases).

You guys are thinking too small, next step is Mother 3

I have such fond, nostalgic memories of paying ZM for the first time in '04. I reserved it at EB Games and rushed to get it when it arrived. It's also one of the first games I played on the SP and playing the included bonus version of Metroid NES was the first time I was able to beat that game under 3 hours. Rediculous amount of value on that little cart, to think people get to have it tomorrow for only $7-8.

Playing the first level was an aesthetic, emotional rush because on the surface the visuals looked quite a bit like Super's style so I connected with it immediately unlike Fusion. Also, I really enjoyed the
Zero Suit mission, thought it was a unique twist and never got the backlash it received.
If only NCL would get rid of those eye peelingly awful high heels they added a few years ago.

As for the ending,
I LOVE the shot at the end of Samus' adorable little chalk/crayon childhood drawing on the bottom of the Chozo statue

In light of that, it's so weird how this game's unspoken story beautifully enhances Samus' lore with the Chozo but then with Other M you'd hardly know how unique her childhood is because all of a sudden Sakamoto lost his mind and became hellbent on turning her into a silly, immature and offensively ultra subservient army brat-girl who gives the thumbs down sign for everything they disagree with like a petulant teenager with a mental tic. Really? We're still supposed to believe this is the dark, troubled, mature and iron-willed young woman raised, genetically modified and trained meticulously for combat on a hostile alien world by a mysterious Vorlon-like extraterrestrial species?

Wow, Other M is just an abomination. I've said it before, aside from some nice action pieces it's the Phantom Menace of the Metroid series. Will Metroid ever get its own Force Awakens "rebirth" moment?

That was great.

Oh yes, how could I forget that. That was...yeah. When they said that, I thought "if it only it were made by NL and yeahhhhh, fans are going to balk."

Edit: Here's my copy (you can see from the price tag how EB stores easily converted to GameStop as they gave me the display box, I protested but it was the last one even though I'd reserved it):

So can we finally moveon from the begging for Zero Mission in other VC topics?

The great thing about NoA is they only release these sought-after VC games after another game has been long established as the one to feel aggrieved about. Super Mario Bros. 3 gave way to Super Mario Kart, which gave way to Zero Mission, which will give way to Super Mario RPG.

God help us if the NES Final Fantasy comes out and other Square-Enix stuff doesn't quickly follow.

*ahem*
Just wanted to point out that the thumbs down is not her being contrarian, but her saying no to "any objections?" Which she was asked personally in all debriefings because she was being semi mocked. It's a silly little anime thing, and it was better just imagining where that phrase came from Fusion, but it has nothing to do with her being rebellious or whatever. Like the mental denial makes people experience Other M 10 times worse than it actually is, like "the baby" thing.

*ahem*

Either way, I adore ZM as well and it's my favourite because it combines the action from Fusion with the wonderfully designed Zebes from SM with speed running being the icing on the cake.

I'm pretty sure the word "Chozo" isn't mentioned at all in Other M, which is a rather bizarre path to take, considering the canon Manga, Zero Mission and the Prime series having major Chozo references, and being released not that long before Other M.

It also waters down Samus' childhood. "I had nobody to call family, no parents, I am a sad person :( :( :(" stuff from Other M just tramples all over Samus actually having adopted Chozo parents who cared for her and raised her. It's pretty disrespectful to the lore to just ignore Samus' adopted family and pretend they don't exist because you want Samus to be sad and lonely and only have Adam to fall back to as a weird love interest/father figure all wrapped into one.

Thankfully we have the internet for that these days. But playing it back in the 90s much of been hell...

I played and beat it for the first time last year, I just learned the map, I drew some stuff in a piece of paper to remind me to go back there.

Also, it is not that big.

Never bought a GBA game on Wii U before. How do GBA games upscale on your TV via the Wii U?

Nearest neighbor with a smoothing filter if I recall correctly. All the ones I've played look fine, with none of the weird quirks or quiggles from the other consoles (thank you based M2).

I've been wanting to try this game out for awhile...hopefully it's as good as Super Metroid.
If we're only talking 2D games, then Zero Mission gets pretty close to Super. It's legitimately better in some ways, such as play control.

I have Fusion on the Wii U VC and I think, for a handheld game, it looks GREAT on the TV. Pretty much as good as the emulation can be.

Yeah, Zero Mission is essentially a completely different game that uses the original Metroid's map as a vague foundation. They are very different.

Diverging from standard, military procedure for personal objections to your colleagues' behavior, publicly, is pretty def. contrary and rebellious. It's also petulant, and Samus points all this out herself in her inner monologue. "I was so young."

Shoot, man, it's one of the things Other M directly communicates in its attempt at a deep, character story. Are you sure you're seeing straight?

It's more of a re-imagining than a strict remake, although it's always labeled as a remake.

It stands out on the extremely remake heavy GBA as being fairly loose with the original content. Versus games like Link to the Past and Mario World, which were mostly just ports with added features, or something like Fire Red/Leaf Green that were graphical remakes, but adhered to the original design of the game, somewhat to a fault (barring evolution of Golbat or Chansey until post game, for example, was ridiculous).

But my god, there were a lot of GBA remakes/enhanced ports. Zero Mission stands as the best though, maybe because it tried to be more different from the original.

They aren't going to cut the OG Metroid games unlock from this are they? Since that one is available in the eShop also... I could see scummy NOA doing that.

...

Why would they do that when Warioware basically gave you a free game of Dr.Mario or when DK64 let you play a game of Donkey kong and jetpac?
