Not fully understanding what's happening is intended, 100%. Fans figuring the game out plot wise way before release would be a gigantic blunder on Kojima and his team.
Also, Big Boss getting in a physical fight with Liquid is almost heartbreaking, dude can't even talk to his young son without some sort of combat. Which is pretty telling actually, awesome foreshadowing for what Solid Snake does to him.

Quiet is not someone I would pin to be in their thirties, and Quiet doesn't remotely resemble Amanda.

This is exactly how I feel. Rockstar makes open worlds where the big picture matters; all the small things are there to create something huge. It seems to be the other way around with Phantom Pain's open world. It is the small picture that matters.

I'm getting the feeling though Quiet isn't a new character completely, that she has some ties to a character or two. The easiest answer is Quiet being Sniper Wolf's mother, but that's too easy.

The earliest we will get MGS5 is April 2015, which I doubt is happening. Konami has said it's coming next fiscal year and at worst the year after if development slips.

That's what I'm getting at, that he feels he couldn't possibly be a father due to who he is and what he's done.
Another form of phantom pain, he's the father to his sons physically, but emotionally he isn't. That would be a pretty painful thing to feel. He was never apathetic at his sons existing, he clearly feels something towards them.

Every character introduced thus far has had ties to other characters or the series in general.
Quiet being a one and done, new character isn't something I'd bet on. Hell, I'd bet Skullface has a rage boner over something having to do with the Philosophers Legacy and how Zero manipulated him.

Kojima made a 30 minute demonstration of TPP open world gameplay but it will be shown behind closed doors at the press only. It might eventually be uploaded online; I sure hope so, it's kinda lame to build hype by not showing it.
