Microsoft announces external HD-DVD drive for Xbox 360

I dont know. Guess it depends on how it is marketed and the MSRP. But the point is that the addon isnt there to push the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 however is there to push the addon and effectively HD-DVD. I dont really think it was initially MSs idea... more likely it is Toshiba I think.

Yup, and with this, I think they are going to get a sweet deal on this. I don't think this was Redmond's idea

are the 90s back and nobody told me?

Only if the drive is shaped like a toilet.

So...what happens when PS3 launches at $399? Or even, God forbid, $499?

Best Buy, Christmas 2006

Employee: Dude, you should definitely come out next week and camp for the PS3. Hold off on the 360. That only has HD-DVD. Blu Ray is the way to go.
Guy: Um, yeah. Actually I just want a game system for my kid.
Employee: Don't you want any Blu Ray movies? The quality is so much better.
Guy: Even on my Toshiba HD CRT I got last year?
Employee (Slowly Guiding Guy Towards The Magnolia Home Theater Section): Well, that brings us to our new Philips 1080p sets.
Guy: Uh, listen dude. My kid just wants to play Gears Of War. His friends at school started a clan and he can't get in it and they, you know, they mock him.
Employee: Aw, dude. Warhawk is gonna kick Gears' ASS.
Guy: The helicopter game? Yeah, that's not really his speed.
Employee: The graphics are amazing though, man.
Guy: Yeah, I mean I saw the footage they aired during Lost last week. That did look pretty sweet.
Employee: See?
Guy: How much is it?
Employee: It's $499. But that INCLUDES the Blu Ray player, out of the box.
Guy: You know, I told myself the fourth time I bought Star Wars that that would be the last time I bought a movie more than once. Sorry. How much is the 360 again?
Employee: $300.
Guy: With hard drive?
Employee: Yeah.
Guy: I'll meet you up front at the register.

Maybe they are just going to switch over to HD-DVD for new models and keep the same price. They would then offer an add on to existing customers for $199. It'll piss off some but that overall number is less than a million customers. The larger piece of the pie is still to come so I say fuck it if I was them and just hose those early adopters.

Okay great but the question still remains. Can movie studios depend on an add-on from a console that probably won't sell more than the PS3?

Wow.

Microsoft has pretty much killed Xbox 360's chances of success. Do they not know thier history?

I feel bad for them.

This post is my favorite in the whole thread, made me laugh.

All MS has done with this addon is allow SONY to say "hey look, if you want a 360 as capable as the ps3 you have to buy a 360 and the HDef addon". So good job giving the competition marketing ammo MS.

Sony must be popping bottles of champagne right now.

Now, when a consumer goes to compare the PS3 to the Xbox 360, they'll compare the cost of the PS3 to the cost of the Xbox 360 + HD-DVD add-on. Because the PS3 has hi-def movie playback out of the box.

Microsoft just handed Sony a HUGE price window to work with, and when Sony strikes back it is going to look very, very ugly.

Thats a good point.

Nongamer: "whats the difference between these two?"
Salesperson: "with xbox360, you can play games for 399. 299 will get you HD movies. On PS3, you can get both for only 449."

I think this might even be a reason why play-yan never hit the US.

DS + 99 playyan = 250 = same as PSP. Price advantage lost.
Without playyan, no comparison.

That's like the worst and most inane hypothetical situation I've ever seen. You even included worthless fluff pieces! Kudos!

This is kinda unecessary...there is no immediate, wide spread demand for a format change and this just smacks of DC's dvd. Still I don't know what the big deal is and WTF at the SegaCD/32X comparisons? Games will more than likely never be on another medium other than DVD and it might very well gaurentee a low cost solution to an intial purchase for those who want to take the plunge.

It might also be the only way to get high-def movies via component...interesting if thats the case. Still, I'll wait...I can't imagine this thing being very attractive physically...how is it going to connect?

and you konw places like Best Buy the employees are going to push the ps3 over the xbox360, they always push sony stuff around here

We still don't know how the average consumer is going to take to these formats, it's mostly the videophiles clamoring for them as far as interest level. It's conceivable that neither take off. I don't know about you guys, but out of the 15 individual households in my family, only one has HDTV(me) and only one is willing to keep up with the technological curve(me) I'm extreme and in the vast minority. I still think both of these will tank once people see the pricing on these things

Er, nickel and diming? for an optional drive? as which other similar products? za? you're stretching there, mr armstrong :)

If you start from the core system you need to pay extra for a wireless controller, WiFi dongle, and the HD-DVD drive. That's a good ~$250 right there.

It would be better to have a higher capacity disc as the standard in the long run, but again, they aren't going to "hose" early adopters. It would make everything they said prior to this event look ridiculous.

If it's inexpensive and small, sounds good to me.

If it costs a lot of $ and literally looks like a separate drive attached via USB to the machine, thumbs down.

I think the HD-DVD drive attached to my X360 will look about as bad as a PSP connected to an X360 having music streamed off of it.

Add-ons suck.

It's like Microsoft's little way of saying " yeah, I know you wanted this to actually serve a purpose, but we'll put it out anyways and make little to no use of it. But...please buy it anyways."

The hard drive is a giant memory card instead of an asset to developers.

The HD-DVD drive is for movies instead of a next-gen storage format.

Thank you Microsoft for crippling your new system by getting those special "price points" down.

I knew this thread would be good, but m0dus's damage control made it GREAT.

One huge flaw in all of the MS apologists' expectations for the drive is that it is not going to be cheap as previously stated in the thread. There's no way MS is going to sell $50 controllers and $100 WiFi adapters and then release a $100 HD-DVD player.

Yeah. It sounds almost as crazy as PS3 being $400 sittting next to $1800 Pioneer Blu-Ray DVD players.

Wouldn't the better option for MS be to just take advantage of the Managed Copy that HDDVD is supposed to have via USB or Ethernet with a standard HDDVD player to bring copies over to the X360 HDD (and announce larger capacity HDDs in the process, of course)?

I think you could at least buy DVDs when the DC showed that addon. This makes no sense, and MS can't block BlueRay in PC, people will make the drives and companies will make the software and drivers.

These new Movie players and 1080p TVs aren't going to be popular for years, there's no need for this now. The nuts need these things now will have both formats anyway.

Console makers take a loss on the main hardware, and make their profits on games and accessories. A $400 gaming console with Blu-Ray is very realistic, but HT component manufacturers don't have that luxury of using that model.

For $500? (Plus The $2000 for a 1080p TV [Conservatively Speaking]).

Is anyone honestly THAT stupid that they'll be willing to reinvest in a whole new Video Library so soon after DVD is catching on? That's the only way everyone else's inane and hypothetical situation will come to pass.

And is there any sign yet of how much BR Discs will cost? That I'm actually curious about.

If it does indeed catch on, I stand corrected. No one'll be taking my 360 away, so I don't get all the hubub and foofoorah in the whole Console Argument.

The difference here is that Sony has a strong financial incentive to increase BluRay's install base, while MS has little to none to do the same for HD-DVD. The only advantage MS gains from HD-DVD taking off is the that BluRay, well, doesn't.

Unless Toshiba is seriously subsidizing the Xbox 360 add-on under the table, I wouldn't hope too strongly that your shiny new HD-DVD drive will cost the same as a controller.

If it's cheap. Fine, I'm good for it. I wouldn't mind having an HD-DVD player, and since I expect blue ray to "win" the next gen dvd wars, I wasn't planning on buying a stand-alone hd-dvd player. But still... it's pretty fucking stupid to not have had it out of the box, then. Ugh.

What if HD-DVD ends up being the next Beta Max, then you would be paying all that extra money for a HD-DVD drive that is not fully supported. This can also apply to Blu Ray as well since no one knows what format will be the dominant one.

I think this move just protects the actual system to control costs. If it was built in like you suggest, the system would of cost alot more...if blu ray is the format that takes off, MS could easily put out a blu ray add-on or even come out with a fully equiped 360 with Blu Ray.

This move to me is a smarter since they are not confining the system to one format just yet. Whatever format becomes the defacto, you can bet you ass that in the future 360's will have that drive built in. As of now, MS can sit back and offer the add-on for those that want it and do the wait and see what comes out on top.

SECAUCUS, NJ, United States (UPI) -- A survey by Panasonic finds 26 percent of U.S. households either owns or plans to own a high-definition television by the end of 2006.

The survey of 1,061 U.S. adults has a margin of error of plus/minus 5 percent.

You're right. But, with the requirement of already needing an X360 to buy one, it won't cost the same as a standalone player. My guess would be around $150.00 with a movie thrown in...but who knows.

I fail to see the problem with this addon. Even if it is for games, they can just offer a regular DVD version, and an HD-DVD version. Like they do for PC games, they have CD and DVD releases.

I'm sure it'll cost less than a standalone player, so people who own both PS3 and X360 can have both a Blu-Ray and an HD-DVD player with only 2 systems hooked up to their TVs versus the extra standalone HD-DVD player.

Can someone explain to me how the BRD players or HD-DVD players will impact the quality of games? Last I checked, especially with the release of the Fight Night 3 demo, the X360 has a pretty impressive lineup out now and has a great series of games coming. PS3 has a great lineup as well. If the games are great on both systems, will any of this matter in the end?

Hawk269 said:

Well they would still have the extra storage capacity available to developers. And if HD-DVD fails then everyone who bought this add-on is screwed as well. Then what? Microsoft will have to release a BR drive and everyone will have to buy that instead. There's no reason for this to come out period.

Bob, I understand what you are saying, but if Blu Ray does not take off, that is a very expensive piece of tech to have inside the PS3 just for the games, when normal DVD can do the same albeit use an additional disk or 3.

I just think that since there is a format war, consumers are going to be buying something they may not want or need, even though games will use the drive, that is still something of an added cost factor to the consumer...especially if it does not take off. Secondly, from what I understand, it needs a 1080p input which as of today no set has, some sets have 1080p upscale, but nothing has 1080p input.

So to take advantage of this, you need the PS3 and a 1080p input capable TV.

With MS's plan that seems more clear now is that they are giving you the option to upgrade if you want. The second part of that is that they are not commiting the 360 hardware to any specific format.

Says nothing of what consumers are thinking about HD content. Buying a HDTV because it's the new thing (what many desire it for) and buying it for HD DVD and Blu Ray is entirely different.

Thanks for telling me what I was responding to, matlock! I'm focusing on the anecdotal evidence where 1 in 15 of the households icebreezy mentioned have an HDTV.

And it's not entirely different. HDTV owners want HD content, period. They watch a HD channel and go "wow," then pop and their dvd collection and want that sort of quality too. Spare me the joe sixpack bullshit.

The second part of that is that they are not commiting the 360 hardware to any specific format.

You mean there is a Blu ray addon? Where?

If MS really cared about xbox so much they'd also give blu ray or if one, Blu ray.

1) It does not need a 1080p input capable TV. Your probably thinking HDMI

2) Theres signs that BD Forum may go with component out for Blu Rays. Even if not, it may even work with DVI w/HTCP (which may be more prevolant than HDMI)

external hd-dvd is a fucking strange idea, but i bet they're doing this because they intend to replace the 360s dvd drive with an hd dvd drive. i think they're doing an external unit to smooth the transition and keep early adopters in the fold. it makes sense for 360 to play hd movies, but launching in 2005 was obviously really important to ms.

Blu-Ray is 25GB a layer. DVD is 4.7. That's over 5 times more space.
In the long run that will be significant when the PS3 games will hold 5 times the data a 360 game can.
Can the 360 at least read dual-layer DVDs for games?
