Microsoft Now Advertising Series S as a 1080p/60 Device

lmao Series S has more 120fps games already than the PS5 ever will.

1080p at 60fps for forza horizon 4 to be precise, that was the focus of this advertisement and that's what they're providing.

But who cares, better to spread FUD online, right?

I would keep marketing it as a 1440p console if I were them, PS4 pro was basically a 1440p device but sony still fooled people to believe it's a 4K device.
Marketing is mainly lies

It doesnt really matter how they market it. It's not the enthusiast product, the price is most important.
If they could bring it down to 199 or at least 249 early in the generation, the little device could really gain Xbox a lot of market share.

I dont really know where to put it right now, mostly because:

it's 60% of the price of the Series X

- but only 33% of the GPU performance
- 50% Storage
- no drive

At 299 I just dont feel it.

Series X price / performance is on another level

They should have done this from day 1 imo. There's no harm in advertising the higher resolution, but I think that's confusing for a lot of consumers who are not tech savvy. 1080 and 4k is clean for people with regular(ish) tv's.

Hopefully clueless developers will understand that the target is 1080@60fps and not 4K@whateverfps on Series S.

no because as right happens that half of the games for one reason or another games load faster on other consoles? I said AT THE MOMENT the console does not show their peculiarities

There's more than 1 type of loading. Initial game start, save loading are NOT the only ones. I think you know there are a handful of exclusive games on PS5 that show off the SSD, I/O. Ratchet n Clank will be another one soon. Level loading in Astro Playroom, Demon's Souls. Save/level, in game loading in Miles.

You said first party games will show it on PS5....now you dont agree?
You guys are left looking so damn desperate for negative content. PS5 doesn't support 1440p either. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think 1080p is a better advertising point for it anyway. Some devs have really done great work with the machine and others....

Hopefully, more devs will look at what Ubi did with AC and give users 30fps with a more comparable visual to XSX or 60fps at whatever resolution and with whatever setting reductions are needed to make that work (go 720p if you have to). I've seen a few of the devs recently try to go with 60fps with aggressive settings and it has just resulted in performance that's consistently in the 40fps range.

@ Banjo64 Banjo64 , that's even more egregious. LOL When Sony stuck that 8k on the box the system couldn't even output at that resolution.

Its a good think Sony never explicitly said 1440p, True 8K then. Does the PS5 have games that reach 120fps right now? How many is irrelevant. Didnt they say there will be a firmware update later for other features?

There is a difference between regular marketing and what MS does at times. There's no need to defend it.

I think its time for me to start doing parody readings of comments on GAF, some of these ones I could have a field day with :messenger_tears_of_joy: Has anyone done something like that on GAF before?

I'd read each comment in my voice/account of choosing, based on my perceived tone of the comment, basically everything sound funnier if you read it in the voice of a highly privileged 17-year old girl from California or an gruff-voiced featuring artist on a rap song or I'll just base it purely on avatar, so FrankWza is just Paulie from the Sopranos.

I think I'd have fun doing that, should I do it? Not sure how much of a sense of humor people would have about it 😬

so FrankWza is just Paulie from the Sopranos.
I'm perfectly ok with this because I already do just that:)Funny thing is, someone the other day was saying they hope that's not me in my avatar and had no idea who it is. I kinda feel bad for the guy...living a sheltered existence like that

It has more to do with 1440p not even being available for most TVs most likely. It should have never been marketed as a 1440p device in the first place. I'm glad to see them be more accurate with it's capabilities.
I think this is accurate, iirc there are games running at better resolutions than on XOX so it's not a matter of capability but more of a marketing thing

Well funnily enough, they had to correct it in the following trailer.

Suddenly the same words did not have the same meaning :pie_thinking:

But that's typical Sony, nothing surprising.

The initial image was because Square Enix said it would be for PS5 and PC at launch, but later retracted it and changed it to PS5 at launch and PC at a later date. At least do your research.

Read the words. They mean something. Normal people don't do research (because they have other things to do), they watch a trailer, read and understand words. And this is exactly what Sony want : people believing that FF XVI is a PS5 console exclusive, indefinitely. Standard communication from them.

1440 was a bit ambitious. I swear, I bet engineers intended that to be the target, I mean most people have 1080p TVs, so it's a waste to fight for 4K resolution when most gamers are gaming on a 1080p set, so where does 1440p fit and why would someone with a 4K TV go for Series S? the damn thing was intended for people on a budget with 1080p displays 🤦‍♂️

Again, Square Enix is the one who retracted the statement at a later point. At the time the initial trailer was released the wording wasn't any trickery or whatever you think it was.

all console clearly do not reflect (at the moment) the characteristics much discussed by their respective manufacturers pr.
the s series without ML Super Resolution will remain a 1080p (or less in future) console. The ps5 without I / O optimization (by now we understand that only the first party will exploit it) will not see any improvement due to the speed of the SSD. The X series without the use of the mesh shader + sfs + vrs + ml will not see the difference given by the 12 tf of power + gpu and + bw
A thread about incorrect marketing and you jump in with your usual incoherent console war nonsense. 😂

Not from the title of the thread that makes it sound like it's a total shift in marketing.
Right. But if you only watch the ad, it is pretty clear that it is about Forza. The name of the game is featured in the title of the video, and it is the only game presented...

It doesn't make sense even for people with 1080p display when you can buy the PS5 DE for $100 more

You know, HDMI 2.1 is backwards compatible. I'm using a PS5 with a 1080p display just fine

Well done for doing the right thing.

Not that it will make a difference since the Series X is the console that is more in demand.

The world is moving on from 1080p TV's.

rare to find games running at 4K native?
Demon's souls is 4K native
Miles morales is 4K native with ray tracing
Astro bot
Sack boy
crash 4(with some rare dips to like 2088p)
And more.......
I don't think most of your examples are 4k native. Hence why 4k is just a marketing number, most people cannot see the differences.

Demon's Souls has two modes: Quality (4k/30) and Performance (1440 upscaled to 4k/60).

Astro Bot is native 4k/60.

Sackboy I believe is dynamic and usually around 80% of 4k.

Miles Morales is similar to Demon's Souls, but also has a third mode.

Not sure about others.

A $299 gift for my nephew is barely doable, but had he asked for a $400 PS5, hell no, that's a sizeable difference in price. (Forget the fact that both X and 5 are almost impossible to get, but BestBuy came through with the S at the nick of time)

The fact that it can play all games down to the OG Xbox is HUGE, not to mention RetroArch. My brother pays for his GamePass subscription, so it's a no brainer. Once you start adding $70 games on top of the $400 dollars, you can see how that option is way more expensive. It's plugged into a 32" LCD that supports 1080p, but has an internal resolution of 1366 x 768 I believe, so there really is no point in outputting higher than native 1080p/60. The Series S is perfect for him, change my mind.

They put 8k on the box when the system could not send a 8K signal to a display, in any form. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I'm sure it has that capability now, it was just a firmware glitch with the hdmi from my understanding.

These the same. People who believe the 8k sticker on PS5?

Completely different:

The 8K Logo on the PS5 is about the HDMI 2.1 Output resolution

The 1440p/60 fps of the Xbox Series S was about the internal game rendering resolution

Don't try to compare the two
