Microsoft screws up Halo 4 DLC release, pretends it was intentional

Between this and the halo banning there is no good reason to take Microsoft's word for anything.

Irrespective of how good or bad their products or services are, their actual communications aren't worth anything.

Take everything they say with a strong dose of scepticism.

Yes, but your initial tone was very against people who buy season passes. :) never mind, though. We won't bicker on that.

The thing here is this: "But I do maintain that buying stuff before you know anything tangible about it is poor judgement."

What would be tangible for you? On what CAN I base my decision to purchase a Season Pass? :/

Company: "Folks, we'll be doing couple of map packs throughout the year, each will cost X MSP, but if you give us [bla] MSP now, you get it all for [bla] % less".

^ this is how it goes for now and I really don't see what could change? IMHO, if they layout a detailed plan for the DLC program then everyone would cry: "a ha! you see? money grabbing bastards are ripping us off with DLCs" , etc. (you see my point?)

I see this really plainly: I like the game, I like it's multiplayer and I want to continue playing it so Season Pass seems like the best option for me. Nothing more, nothing less.

But after this shit? *sigh* I really don't know what to say. I hope it's an isolated incident (at least for me it is because, like I said, Gears 3 worked fine and I got my money's worth).

I understand why people see a good proposition in it. After all, you just bought this shiny new product, and there is content upgrades coming down the road, might as well just get them all at a discount:

Problem for me:
-I'm a very conservative consumer. I evaluate every purchase a hundred times, even small stuff. Sometimes this ends up detrimental to me (missing opportunities) but mostly I'm saving myself a headache. I know this sounds like I'm about 60 years old, but that's just how I was raised, and being a student really makes you turn those cents over and over.
- DLC is mostly of varying quality. In my experience, DLC support for any game has never warranted the purchase of all DLC packs.
- I rarely play an MP game regularly for more than a month before losing interest (usually after a month, everyone is done experimenting, and games become predictable and boring, as well as exploits-cheats-boosters becoming an annoying reality.
- You can still buy a Season Pass once one or more pieces of DLC are released, so you can still save money, while having a better idea about how serious the company is about actually providing DLC in a timely fashion and about the general quality of it.

Again, I never intended on calling anyone an idiot. Doing something irrational doesn't make anyone an idiot. If so everyone on this planet, and everyone who ever lived and will ever live is an idiot.
But buying into such schemes, even if you're convinced about the benefits, only makes you the customer responsible for any frustrations. You gave them your money allready, and thanks to the legal grey area that is Digital Distribution, they can deliver whatever they want, regardless of initial promise or customer expectation. Did I forget to mention, that they can revoke your rights to get this content at any time, without you having any say in it? Without you having any legal ground to stand on?

Season pass buyers have no one else to blame but themselves. They deserve no sympathy other than pitty for buying into this money grabbing scheme.

I can only congratulate MS for their business practises, as they have mastered the art of milking their customers, and rip off the most devoted as they'll take the abuse.
It's genius, for everyone they piss off, 10 new ones are ready to throw their wallets at them.

I guess the only lesson to be learned here is: Don't buy a cat in a bag.

We love halo and we will be buying the map packs on day 1 anyway. Saving a few bucks and getting all map packs is not a bad idea at all. This is MS fault not the customers. None of us was expecting this to happen including MS. The right thing to do now is to compensate those customers.

Is US only as far as i know

Nope, downloading it myself right now, living in the UK. When I purchased my copy, the staff at the shop, Game put in my bag the code to unlock the specialisations.

Note for other people, download it from the in-game marketplace, not from the dashboard.

So I'm asking for this game for Christmas, should I be requesting the Limited Edition or regular version?

The LE is now $60 more, but I don't want to have to buy the map packs myself down the line.

Yea, there is probably a higher up somewhere telling people it's a trial as he frantically scrambles to figure out how to make that happen.

Yep.

And he'll meet with the lawyers today, and explain his plan to use the Xbox DRM to revoke access to the Crimson maps from people who got them for free.

And then the lawyers will FREAK. THE FUCK. OUT. Especially those who have any non-US knowledge.

And then Xbox Support's line will change again by this time tomorrow.

"As part of our new "make it up as you go along" promotion, Halo 4 purchasers who obtained the Crimson Map Pack without paying can now keep it in perpetuity, as our thank you!"

They ask you to pay 1/4 of your Console's worth for ONE game.

Then they ask you to pay more less than a month after the game launches.

EAT A FUCKING DICK

LE is not worth $60 more. I'm sure you can find the standard edition for less than $40 over Christmas.

LE is absolutely not worth it. It wasn't worth it when it was $40 more, and it's sure as hell not worth it at $60 extra. Sadly, I only found this out after buying it myself. :/ First time I've ever actively regretted buying an LE.

when will people learn not to buy season passes?

For me it was a trial and error thing. It looks good on paper, especially for a game you know it will be "worth" it for. Then you do it...then you get screwed over with something like this or short/shitty dlc.

But yeah, everyones warnings here are warranted. Its probably best to steer away from season passes.

Wait....you can get the first map pack for free? How? I want a freebie! :)

Supposedly it is only "free" until December 18 when you will then be required to buy the Crimson Pack DLC in order to keep playing on those maps. Essentially a trial version of DLC.

This is something that Microsoft just created over the last few days to seemingly cover up a mistake on their end.

I am assuming this is to combat the idea of having to compensate the "season pass" buyers otherwise they would be paying for content that was essentially free to most everyone else but them.

Man.. I feel very, very sorry for people that bought the Season Pass. It's such a big disrespect from MS and 343 part with the people that believed and suported the game from the beggining.

And now lying that "it's all part of the plan" makes it much worse.

I want to see if 343 will even touch the subject on this weeks Bulletin.

I wish they would just talk to their own damn community about these things, instead of just ignoring it/ making stuff up.

Really, really bad PR coming from the H4 team.

Getting the map pack for free was a surprise, but there's nothing 343 can offer to compel me to play this game. I've enjoyed pretty much all the Halo games except for ODST, but in my opinion even that was better then 4. Nothing in Halo 4 is remarkable or even memorable. A real disappointment.

that's cool. i still play for hours every night. even with this screw up, hopefully it brings in some new players wanting to take advantage of the free maps.

So, first my campaign data gets erased, then my loadouts, and now I've wasted money on the map pass?

Keep piling the shit on, 343. Worst purchase I've done all year.

So apparently, you had to try and enter the Crimson playlist in order to get it for free? Just my luck. I never clicked on the playlist (since I didn't have the maps) and my XBL Gold expired last night. I already went ahead and snagged a deal for a 12 month gold subscription, but it won't be here for another 5-6 days :-/

I would just go ahead and create another gamer tag, but you have to enter you CC info now in order to activate the trial and I don't really feel like doing that right now (unless I get really desperate).

How long is it gonna be available for free?

No, you had to:

1) not buy the season pass
2) play Halo 4 within the first two weeks
3) get the specialization unlock code from Microsoft
4) use said code

Well how do you get the specialization code? Because I played Halo 4 the day it was released and I never bought a season pass.

It was emailed to people under the title ""Here is your gift from Xbox LIVE." Those that didn't get that email and made it known they didn't get said email got the code sent to their Xbox Live accounts vis Messages.

Check your Live or Hotmail email associated with your gamertag.

You should have also received a message through Xbox Live so check your messages through your dashboard or at Xbox.com

Save your money, son. Get the standard edition. Even if you buy the season pass it will only cost you $25. 40 + 25 = 65. That's less than $100.

Just give map pass/LE owners 800 MS points and let this pack stay free. The game gets a much needed player boost and everyone's happy.

I'm confused. Why does the game need a player boost? I thought Halo is the most played online MP on xbox? (maybe less than COD)

Hmmmm.....the only email I got from Live was something about adding a security proof.

Fake edit: I'm reading here that some people still didn't get it. And even here, more people are complaining about not getting codes.

Heh, this is the first time I'm hearing about a code that I should have received.

You're supposed to get the specialisations early if you bought the LE?

I do not have those :/

I don't begrudge anyone free maps, though.

I didn't buy a Season Pass, I bought a collector's edition. I didn't even realize that we were getting a season pass. This is pretty cool, IMO. The more people that get the maps for free, the less the player-base is split.
In any case, I still don't get how specializations work.

LOL....I found my code (or at least the email that is supposed to contain the code). It was linked to the email address that I used when I first signed up with Xbox Live.....like a thousand years ago. I was just skimming that thread and found this post:

Was the email sent to the account linked to your Gamertag, IE the one I enter to log into my account at xbox.com, or the one that is under the contact preferences of My Account on xbox.com? Because for me they are two different emails, and I don't have access to the second one.

So I did that and was amazed that an email address that I hadn't used in years was listed as my contact email. I never would have even though to check there.

The code was never sent to my dashboard, however. But whatever.

Thanks for making this thread. I actually had to download a Patch, go to Matchmaking and only there I saw an option to get the Maps for 0 MS Points and I'm now downloading for free.

I have the Limited Edition by the way. Will there be anything else for LE owners? Thanks in advance.

I spent the 10 bucks on the standalone map pack (not the pass) a few hours before they inadvertantly made them free for everyone. I was okay with that when they were talking about it like a technical glitch, but now that they've gone and made it official with their shitty PR spin, I want that money back. Will I get it? Of course not, knowing Microsoft.

It ain't just season pass owners getting the shaft here.

You bought the map pack early???? Be happy they didn't ban you!

OK, ummm....so apparently, the code was sent to a temp account on for an old Xbox that I don't even have anymore.

Can I just redeem the code by typing it in on my main account (Xbox Live Guide > Games & Apps > Redeem Code) instead of hitting the redeem code button online?

EDIT: Nevermind, it worked. I just typed it in. Free map pack am get!

Ugh! Can't find my spec code anywhere. Looks like I didn't get one. What's the protocol for rectifying this? Ring MS support?

You might have to do what I did. Check my previous post.

im in the same boat as you. i think we out of luck. Xbox account was linked to older email I can't access. Really sucks.

If you have a code you should be able to enter into marketplace. I dont even have the code.

My god, I can't identify with any of the ridiculous venom the Halo community is spewing at this game.

It could certainly use some Forge maps put into matchmaking, but otherwise I love it.

(Though I am mildly regretful I bought the season pass now. I'm sure you rage-monkeys will terrorize them into to doing something to recompense, though.)

This is so easy to fix, if you redeemed a season pass, LE or bought the standalone map pass MS should award you 800 msp. Don't they have an idea how much good will that would bring?

I bought the game on day of release and played a lot for the first week or so but I don't seem to have received the code.

Just checked my xbox account and I have no other email addresses registered other than my primary one.

Am I meant to do anything else to access the code?

Are you inside or outside the US? If outside, you're out of luck, as it was a US-only thing. If inside, then you should probably contact Xbox support about it.

Check your spam email or look in your download history in your account settings to see if the code was already redeemed somehow and download it again.

I got a message from live a few days after they started releasing the codes apologizing for the delay and they gave me my code...sadly I already got a code from a fellow gaffer so I had an extra code to give to a friend. It has been a mess.

Thanks again for the code, FyreWulff!
