Sorry but do people here really think that durango will help lead the charge into improvement of the broadband infrastructure around the world?

This has got to be a joke. My local council (in UK) has been bombarded from local businesses and residents, who pay taxes to them, for over 5 years for improvements to be made. Yet everytime they get turned down because of cost and disruption.

However, do you really think that because a foreign company, that has a stupid notion that a games console needs to be online, is going to suddenly change their mind?

Sorry but thats utter nonsense...
Or at least they aspire for that relevance again. ;)

Had a very busy weekend and it seems I've missed quite a bunch of stuff in the thread. Last time I checked the thread had like 4000 posts :S

So it seems the guy got fired over this in the end according to what is updated in the OP?

We don't really know he's been fired. I think one site claimed they had a source tell them he was, gonna need more than that before I believe it, though.

Just goes to show you the difference in focus between MS and Sony. Sony packs in a camera too but make it clear to everyone their focus is on gamers, and we've heard almost no talk from developers about it. Meanwhile kinect is the only thing MS focuses on anymore.
So untrue. But, nice try though. MS literally released Forza Horizon, Halo 4, and Gears of War Judgement back to back but somehow someway Kinect is the 'only thing MS focuses on anymore'.

According to your faulty logic, the only thing Sony showed on stage at the announcement in New York was a Move game from Media Molecule.

Why ew? Are people pretending that current consoles arent used for exactly what was written. Even the PS4 reveal conference talked of social features.

edit.

Oooh that's right it's selective memory mode again
You can still be a multimedia box with all these social features and still focus on gaming like the PS4. Its clear the focus of the next xbox is not gaming anymore, its more like gaming is another feature not the main point of the console.

Goddamn, check out Gamespot's news column, and their article on this has over 16,000 comments while everything else has around 100 or so lol.
IGN's article has 8200 comments and the top comment had 15 000 upvotes. Its crazy. MS surely see this.

It's more likely than not that the "always online" rumor is true. The amount of raw hatred for the idea would have, you'd think, prompted MS to deny it by now if it wasn't the case. I think this is it for them, honestly. The PS brand catches on everywhere, the Xbox one does not, for starters. Even if they patch out the undesirable aspects they allegedly will implement, it'll be too late. The PS4 will be on the shelves beside it. With the RRoD, there weren't any options for another year.

Sony took back a lot of market share in the latter part of this hardware cycle, and could easily keep gaining ground into the next generation. The Wii U has stalled, and MS going "always online" will be a complete disaster. The key difference is that nobody hates the Wii U, they just want some games before they buy one. It's easy to make more software, it's not easy to completely restructure your console and its network, depending on how the infrastructure is set up (especially when your company takes over 3 years to completely eradicate the RRoD).

As if Microsoft gave a shit about this uproar. If Windows 8 proved anything, they are everything but not a customer oriented company.
I love all the comments of people saying, "They wouldn't do it if it wasn't focus tested and obviously people are willing."

Uh, Windows 8 anyone? This is not a company that knows what it's doing all the time or has a strong handle on what it's customers want.

Trucked through the entire thread today.

What a thorough and complete fuck up on Adam's part. Maybe all this vitrol though will make Microsoft get rid of always online and kinect requirements.

Gaming is just a hobby for me now, something to do when I'm not doing anything else. Don't force me to sink this much cash into something that I'm not going to be doing all the time.

At this rate, I'm going to be getting a PS4.

The more and more I hear this "all in one box" shit the more I just look at my laptop and say, "I already have something that does that." It's like Microsoft thinks they're inventing the PC with the next Xbox.

I want a thing that plays games, and that's about it. I know that I'm a minority opinion here, but come on.

On the contrary, since the Xbox 360, the primary new products from MS have been Zune, Kin, Windows Phone, and Surface. I'm neglecting to mention Windows and Office because they aren't new products. But it's pretty easy to see that all of MS's attempts at new products the past decade have been disastrous. MS is not a company which knows or cares what it's customers want, it's a company which knows and cares what it wants. And judging from Windows 8 and Office 2013, it's becoming increasingly clear that what MS wants and it's customers want are increasingly in opposition to each other. An online-only, can't play games unless connected to the Internet Nextbox would be just another example of what MS wants and they don't give a flying fuck what their customers want. Which is fine, Win8 is failing spectacularly and the early word of mouth on Office 2013 is not positive. When the Nextbox fails, maybe MS will come to their senses and realize that being the de-facto computer OS monopoly doesn't mean they can just shit out anything they like and people will buy it in droves. If not, surely at some point their shareholders will wake up and finally get rid of Ballmer and his board. Maybe.

its interesting that people are saying ms will lose and sony will win, when infact sony is allowing devs to do this on ps3 if they so wish, well when third party devs start releasing games for durango and ps4 dunrago will be always and if the game is coming out on ps4 then it will be always online there too.

So then you can choose not to buy that one game.

I'm saving this thread for future crow eating. Gaf tends to forget all the stupid shit it says once they are proven wrong.
Make sure you get individual names so you can prove how clever you are if things turn out a certain way. Wouldn't want you looking like a fool saying something like "GAF got owned11!!11, ahahaha" and implying GAF is one big entity like so many do here.

I have your back.

Third party games that are region locked on 360 are not region locked on the PS3. Just sayin'. All publishers will not want to take the heat you get for always on-drm.

I haven't followed Windows 8 AT ALL, so would anyone enlighten me on what shitty practices MS is doing with Windows 8.

It's fun to hate...especially when it's change, new things, etc.

I have Windows 8 as my primary gaming PC and laptop. It actually creates a better workflow environment. I get higher FPS in games (even if it's slight), and the speed is incredible.
