Miyamoto checks out the oculus rift

Doesn't Miyamoto have a reputation of not being impressed with anything at E3? Or anything that he doesn't develop himself? Kind of a snob? Genuine question. It seems like I remember reading that somewhere.

Is Miyamoto known as a nice guy in RL or more of a prick like Steve Jobs was?

If you ever get the chance to go to Tokyo, I highly recommend stopping by the Nintendo building. About a dozen years ago, my family was in Japan for one of my dad's business trips and my two brothers and I tracked down the HQ and walked in. An older looking man in a business suit stopped us, asked us in broken English what we were doing, and we told him just exploring and enjoying being in the building where our favorite games were made.

No, he was not Miyamoto. But he did take us to the elevator and escorted us in to Miyamoto's office where he was doing some paperwork. He stopped everything, poured us some tea, and chatted with us for about 10 minutes before writing a note to the clerks downstairs to give us some swag. One of the most memorable and awesome moments of my entire life.

I think he's prolly a really cool and ncie person, but a strict boss, especially when it comes to quality.

The picture in the OP is kind of badass. You just know Bill has Shiggy's back the moment a fight breaks out (even if Shiggy starts it).

This is a stupid discussion.

People invent stuff all the time, who invented the cell phone? But, but... it changed the world. Who invented the iPod? It wasn't Steve Jobs. Who invented the color TV? Hell, who invented the TV?

I rest my case.

One of the main characters of Futurama shares his last name as homage and another main character has a first name that is somewhat similar as well, conveniently they're voiced by the same person.

This could also be said about some of the Japanese people I have worked with. Some of the nicest people but if something gets F'd, they aren't shy about saying what needs to be done and who is at fault.

Nothing wrong with this, either. Problem with a lot of western companies is the fact that no one wants to say anything is wrong or own up to any problems for fear of losing their job.

Horse shit. Nevermind the fact that Nintendo wasn't in Tokyo 12 years ago. I went to Kyoto in 2005, walked through the main gate and got 5 metres in before the gate guy stopped us altogether. He said we could get a little closer look so we wandered another 20 metres before getting called back. Didn't even get in the vicinity of the building. They did give me a printed Annual Report though :D

Well, he liked Watch_Dogs. There is always people like this every year of him visiting other booths and playing stuff,

These links are cute and all... but they don't really counter the point I'm making. After all, I can reference many more links about all the figures I reeled off the top of my head.

You asked if people knew him; not if he was the most popular person on the planet.

Lol. I was wondering if there was a translator there since he said Miyamoto talked with them for 10 minutes.

Regardless, I still think he's a pretty nice fellow. Strict boss, most probably. And one you don't want to piss off.

Although I really really want to see how a pissed-off Miyamoto looks and sounds like.

There's a character in futurama named Philo voiced by Billy West?

I could've been more careful with the wording, but people are been obtuse in their responses.

It'd be difficult to argue that Miyamoto is a more well known name than general computing industry titans like the ones I listed. And is probably not someone that most non-gamers would recognize the name of.

I wonder if he even knew that VR was a thing again before he sat down with that.
Nintendo people are usually seriously out of touch with what's going on in games outside their walls.

Probably a strict guy but I can't see him not being a good person. Also, yeah, I'm sure he'd really want to be the one inventing Oculus Rift.

Nintendo released the Virtual Boy and their handheld has a 3D display, I guarantee they will have done many experiments with VR technology over the years.

Lol, just remembered that story of a gaffer how Miyamoto happily gave him his business card with his email without thinking. Then a Nintendo rep asked it back after Miyamoto had gone.
I would have told them no. He gave it to him and it is now his property.

Not like Jobs at all. Miyamoto is literally able to tap into the pure innocence and creativity of a child who thinks anything is possible, and this is his public face.

But underneath that lies the ruthless, uncompromising spirit of a pure perfectionist. Upending the tea table. He is secretly legendary for being ruthless, in insiting for perfect quality.

The guy doesnt look his age at all. He is 61 and looks like in his 40s...

Hope he has some more years of games in his body before he retires :-)

Hopefully Sakurai can become the "new" Miyamoto

He's going to be videgaming's first legendary lifetime creator, well into old age.

He's videogaming's Clint Eastwood, Miyazaki, or Kurosawa. I want to see him make stuff well into his 70s and 80s.

I have several theories about the relationship between Bill and Shiggy:

1) Shiggy as we perceive him is the astral projection of some ancient shambling darkness. Bill is merely a brainwashed human, synced with his master.

2) Shiggy is a witch, and Bill is his familiar.

3) Bill is well-versed in Japanese culture.

Leaning toward 1) or 2), personally.

Oh my face hurts from laughing.

Edit: Srs though, I feel like, when he took off the visor I would be all over him like... "WELL?!" I'm dying to know his thoughts on the experience. I'm also curious if his hands were affected by the 360 controller, such as inflammation or rash.

Wasn't the tea table phrase figurative? As in, he'll flip game design on its head if its required, not actually flipping tables physically?

So how long until Oculus announces their newest addition to their team?

Ha, it was the first thing I thought of. :) How much of their Facebook money do they have left, after recruiting all the big wigs they can ? :P

Yep, but flipping an entire multi-year development process is more intense than any real table. He's the real deal.

Well, we know that the hardware in Wii U is designed to handle 3D since Gamecube... so I imagine Oculus support would not be hard to add

I'm sure Miyamoto has gotten countless of offers from all kinds of companies during the last 30 years. Preeetty unlikely he'll start job shopping now.

And Nintendo is a hardware company. They can make anything Oculus is making if they want.

I find it great that E3 is a time for Miyamoto to check out the concepts designed by others, must be a interesting time for such a revolutionary like him to see the other ideas by others. Seeing him play Tearaway or LittleBigPlanet makes me feel a lot happier for some reason.

Hes been at the Nintendo since the end of the 70s so I guess now its lifetime commitment to the company...

The Oculus team already has several legends on it.

It would literally be like Superman paying a visit to the rest of the Justice League... Though I guess this analogy doesn't really work since Superman is part of the Justice League, but you know what I mean...

It makes you think, if miyamoto never made video games would the rift even exist?

Well... think about the success of id Software and John Carmack... even though John Carmack has been interesting in gaming all the way back to the Apple ][ which does pre-date the Famicom/ NES, his first claim to fame in the game industry was Commander Keen which started life as a Super Mario Bros. 3 tech demo to showcase that smooth scrolling could be done on PC using EGA using an adaptive tile refresh trick that he came up with. There was an interesting story about id's Dangerous Dave Mario 3 demo from John Romero's own website: http://planetromero.com/games/dangerous-dave-in-copyright-infringement

"We decided to create a real, polished Super Mario 3 demo and send it to Nintendo Of America to see if we could do the PC port of the game. The SM3 demo made it to Nintendo of Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto specifically. They were very impressed with the demo but their corporate plan was to never release their IP on a platform other than their own."

The Oculus Rift really gained traction when John Carmack hooked up with Lucky Palmer through a web forum on the prospect on making the Rift a reality. Carmack first showed a really primitive Rift demo at E3 2012 and things have been snowballing down hill from there. So yeah, in Oculus's case, this statement would be true. In VR's case, it was going to happen regardless, just by different people and under different circumstances.

Though one of the real big reason's why VR is making a resurgence is mobile phone technology. The money that mobile companies are investing in the pixel density and image quality of LCD's, plus things like gyroscopic sensors and accelerometers, there have been many advances in the mobile arena that have been lending themselves to the Rift development. These are reasons why people like Lucky Palmer and John Carmack took a stab at this.

It's really complicated to name someone specifically for the TV as such, since lots of people worked on it, and had their own tech, so it was progress over progress over progress, but I remember reading somewhere that the color TV was actually invented in Mexico(?) or some latin american country like that.
