Edit: oops, meant NA/EU, not worldwide. Can a mod please fix the title?

Capcom just sent out a PR to announce it. That's 1m for Europe and North America combined, retail (shipped) and eShop (sold). (Don't worry, Japan hasn't been annihilated and is still on Earth).

Main reasons quoted for success:

- demo release to win over new players
- free DLC
- community events
- simultaneous launch with the New Nintendo 3DS

"Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate" Becomes the First Title in this Series to Top One Million Units Shipped in Europe and North America!
- Events, trial versions, free downloads and other marketing activities have attracted many users in Europe and North America -

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that overseas shipments of "Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate" for the Nintendo 3DS™ ("Monster Hunter 4G" in Japan) have surpassed one million units shipped in Europe and North America. These shipments include both retail and Nintendo eShop download sales.

The "Monster Hunter" series is an action RPG game that pits players against giant monsters in a beautiful natural environment. The series has sparked a social craze known as the "Monster Hunter Craze" by introducing a new kind of communication style for players through cooperative play focused on hunting monsters with their friends. The number of fans has increased steadily since the first "Monster Hunter" title made its debut in 2004. The series has grown into a mega-hit with cumulative sales of more than 32 million units around the world as of February 16, 2015.

In terms of the series, "Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate" follows the March 2013 launch of "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate" in Europe and North America. The latest title is the biggest and most accessible yet, adding new monsters and weapons as well as dynamic three-dimensional action with even more vertical movements. Another feature is online play with others via broadband Internet, a feature that is in strong demand in Europe and North America.

Since the launch of the previous "Monster Hunter" title in Europe and North America, Capcom has used many activities to retain the many enthusiastic fans and attract many new users. For example, there are special events and a robust online community for game players. Downloads of trial games for first-time users and the continuous provision of free downloadable content have also helped extend the strong sales of "Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate". In Europe and North America, the successful launch of this new title coincided with the introduction of the New Nintendo 3DS™, which resulted in "Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate" becoming the first title in the series to reach shipments of one million units in Europe and North America.

Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by making the most of its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create high quality gameplay experiences.

The game deserves this success, seriously.

I had a lot of fun with the demo, I need to get around to buying the game at some point.

Good to see the series finally enjoying the success it had always deserved. The day MH sells as well as the Souls games is the day we know we live in a just world.

I hope this leads to more free DLC and a guarantee that Monster Hunter will be there for the next Nintendo handheld launch.

Deserved. It is by far the best Monster Hunter game I've played and I'm not even a fan of the series. I think is a great start for newbies.

Should change the title to "in the west", since worldwide would technically include Japan (despite the name) where it's done well over 3 million IIRC alone. :p

I was so confused by the title. I figured it would do more than that in Japan alone.

But apparently Japan isn't even on Earth.

Was thinking the same thing, except thankfully I saw a correct title elsewhere =). Props to Monster Hunter though. Considering it sold about 290K in the US to start, I guess it's likely hit close to 400-500K in the US (unless the balance leans more towards Europe or the rest of the Americas).

Hot Damn. This is really the success it deserves.

Wonder if SE will bring over FE Explorers now... probably not.

I think i may have missed out on the free dlc, but all things considered, MH4 may not have been for me XP
Regardless, congrats on any success =)

MH4U didn't release in Japan, MH4G did.
Not the same game, not the same content!

Actually it is the same game & content.

Aw yis.

Wait how did they lose over a million sales from Japan? /s

Is this like the popGAF way to say Kappa? I don't get it and I've seen it around the past month or so. I'm so out of the meme lingo loop
Kreygasm and Kappa are both Twitch emotes, does PopGAF actually use the former?

I contributed to this. Excellent game. The addition of extra levels (hills, etc) really adds an extra dimension to the game. Feels much more dynamic somehow.

Should've also had a Wii U version for that juicy extra 25k

Kreygasm

I know you're joking, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a WiiU HD crossplay/save up-port with sales like these and Nintendo's continued backing. E3 would be a nominal reveal window for fall release.

The success long waited finally arrived.^_^

Best MH game and of course now with online baby. Congratz to Capcom.^_^

It's probably the best game I've played this year (although admittedly, it's still very early). I'm really happy to finally see MH getting the recognition it deserves, because it has definitely earned it.

Aren't the dlc already built into the game? They're basically giving us unlock codes on a monthly basis, something which I find pretty lame. They could learn a thing or two from soul sacrifice.

No they aren't in the game.

Every DLC takes a few MB of space, unlock keys are a few KB at most.
Explain why people can get jp dlc armor without having the dlc then? One person can host a quest and the entire team can unlock the armor. Moreover, I've seen people with the star Knight armor even before I knew about the exploit.

Is there a story to this game even if it sucks and does the game still have fetch this and that with their quest system?
