Apocalypse Now has amazing cinematography. I'm glad someone mentioned it, but it definitely needs more love. A lot of GAF probably fell asleep trying to watch it, but practically every shot is a masterpiece.

I agree that most stories don't need lavish cinematography, but I don't think your example holds up. The camcorder footage stands in contrast to the exquisite cinematography of that film... the scene just wouldn't have the same impact if the rest of the movie looked cheap.

More can be done with professional cinematograpy. It's just like a musical recording. A good song doesn't need expensive processing to be enjoyable, but when it's produced professionally, it's a different thing. What the "core" of the artwork is is less important. A painting and a drawing relate to each other, but they exist just as much as their own thing.

Anna Karenina's whole theatre setting allowed Joe Wright to build some incredibly great shots and cinematography. Stuff like the horse race on a theatre stage can't be conveyed in stills though.
