I guess I'll post some of my music first.

This is a song I did for a youtuber named Jesse Cox. He calls his fans Space Butterflies. I made a theme song dedicated to that. Everything in it is me, except the drop where Jesse cox says "Now to destroy all". This is also my most popular song ever. lol.
OMFGCata - Space Butterfly Theme Song

Once I made an orchestra play dubstep.

Ha well you have the two I listed already checked off.

You just got me curious. I found this. Pretty great.

Nice looking OP. Hopefully we'll get some more folks in here and get a nice little community of music makers going. I do some synthpop and dark ambient/drone/noise stuff. I've recently purchased a guitar and my fingers hurt.

Excellent! I've toyed with the idea of making a thread like this for a long time but never did it. I'm really glad you did! I hope people contribute and keep it active.

I'm working on an instrumental metal album right now. A lot of the stuff is in-progress, but I just threw a demo up because I'd like to contribute to the thread.

There's a lot of stuff I know I need to work on, but I'd love any feedback on it anyway!

Nice OT! I really like the Space Butterfly song

I'll post my soundcloud even though I'm just an amateur: https://soundcloud.com/risis-1

Mostly electronic music, all of them made in Reason 5. Any feedback or criticism is always appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm at work right now, so I can't really get a good listen to your music, I'll check it out and update this post later. Also, I used to use Reason 5 a few years ago. I liked it a lot. You can have a high output, just because of the ease of use. I ended up going back to FL Studio though because I need the Massive VST. If Reason had VST support I would've stuck with it.

Thanks That's my hope as well, I just saw a big gap in music making on here. Where there are only a few threads where people post their own music, and the people who make music that doesn't fit those threads don't post it at all.

Can't wait to hear some music besada!

Yeah, Gaf was in need of a thread that all music makers could post. I hope it gets it's footing as well.

And, I can't wait to take a listen to it! I'm probably going to turn my 45 minute drive to work and back into a listening party for this thread.

I'm so glad that someone made this thread! I wanted to make one similar to it for a while (and a few years back, I did). I have quite a bit of things to shill.

I'm in a band called Sons of Origin. We're a Pop/Rock group, though we can play anything, really. I play percussion, sing background vocals and currently am playing keyboards. Here's our first music video for a song off our first album, called "Nothing Left To Lose": http://youtu.be/OhMf1BBKe8s

Here is a Spotify link to our first, self-titled album: http://open.spotify.com/artist/6v3rFLS2ONAMYeSUpSRvyf

We've started an acoustic cover series on YouTube. Here is the first one, a cover of Hozier's Take Me to Church: http://youtu.be/LviICy7jmag

We've also done Lorde's Royals, Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, The Foo Fighters I Am A River, and Jesse J's Bang Bang. Don't worry. We don't do a straight note-for-note cover of any of these songs. We often change the feel, time signatures and styles for the covers. They sound different, almost like originals in a few cases.

I'm also in another band, Tom Cintula and the Buffalo 24. We're more of a Pop/Folk group, with some Rock and Funk influences. Again I play percussion and sing background vocals. Here's a video of us playing an original song called "In Your Head" at the NYC Battle of the Boroughs: http://youtu.be/q3wMvZdYkSU
This is also another (acoustic) original called "Why" for an audition tape to NPR's Tiny Desk music concert series: http://youtu.be/5vtTRZY5JDA

This is a Spotify link to our EP, Slow And Steady: http://open.spotify.com/album/2VI6VpJT7LayRk8wOfS6as

I also have a Jazz group, called The Mode Collective. We don't meet that often, but when we do, I sing and am the band leader. Here's two videos:
Lush Life - http://youtu.be/seR4KsAeq-4
Sweet Georgia Brown - http://youtu.be/QcY9Y3LfL3I

Here is a ReverbNation link, with some full-length tracks that I recorded, like All Blues, Tenderly and Work Song: http://www.reverbnation.com/themodecollective

I perform in many more bands/groups than this. But I don't have too much media readily available. I will be updating this thread when I do, though.

Things I need to do: fix my guitar. Or buy a new one. Or both.

And I need to write more. I wish I could do lyrics, that'd make everything so much easier. At the very least I wish I had a band.

I have my Fender California.. I've had it for 3-4 years now, and I'm still a beginner at guitar. I don't know why I can't bring myself to pick it up and learn something..

I love looking at it though

You make some reeally groovy stuff. I like it. Looks like you just need experience in mixing melodies without them clashing, or sounding too bunched up. That comes with time. Keep it up! I hope to hear more!

My favorite out of everything though has to be The Very Thought Of You. Listened to that one three times.

Thanks, man. I need to re-do the lead guitars 'cause that tone isn't where I want it. I also listened to some of your stuff. Lift Me Up is awesome! I've been listening to Odesza a lot lately and am loving that sound.

Welp, all this is freaking great. I love the vocal focus of Sons of Origin. It's great when groups put a lot of vocal texture into rock stuff. It makes it much richer than when you just have a lead singer do a double or a harmony in the studio and call it good. Seriously awesome.

I make electronic music in Cubase, most of my stuff is on my SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/maumaumusic quality is mixed. i'm trying to improve.

My last big project was part of the soundtrack for psyscrolr for Wii U (by GAFfer Ashodin). Some tracks like the main theme I'm pretty proud of. https://soundcloud.com/maumaumusic/sets/psyscrolr-ost-1

Did you do all of the tracks in that playlist for the OST that you linked? Summer Feeling is so good. Really digging the OST. A lot of the other tracks remind me of Castle Crashers, which had a lot of good, memorable stuff. Great work!

Thanks. Yeah, I really feel like things can go really far with that band. We're gonna play a few Showcases down in Austin, Texas for SXSW this March. So wish us luck that it helps!

Funny thing about The Very Thought of You. It was done in one, single take. We didn't have much time left in the studio at that point. We had to wrap it up, but we had the time to do one more song. This was the song. I had only played with the drummer a few times before getting called into the studio to sit in. Never played with the pianist or bassist (and haven't played with them since). I had also not sung this song before that session either, though I knew of the song. That's the life of a working musician, though.

Yeah, those guys are all very talented, and are very influenced by The Beatles, specifically. Also the Foo Fighters. But they always write with harmonies in mind. I just find a third harmony to add to the guitarist and bassist (who are brothers and the primary songwriters), which doesn't take me long since I have perfect pitch, and off we go. A lot of fun playing with such talented people.

There is ONE SONG I've been DYING to get an instrumental of.

This is the song I'm talking about. I don't give two shits about the lyrics/singing. I love that smooth instrumental. It's so soothing. I've searched for years. An instrumental of this doesn't exist.

Would anyone here be able to recreate said instrumental?

For those who don't know, we're trying to make a free compilation album of music made by gaffers, this is the thread if anyone wants to take part in it:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=905669

(the theme of the album is collaborations, but solo tracks are fine too)

aw, i completely forgot about it this time around. The first one turned out great!

I'm kinda busy with other things right now, not sure if I can get something done by next week...

Copying/Pasting from thread I made.

--

So I've been looking at recording equipment for my music and I'm not exactly sure what to go for here. I'm looking for something that will record electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, and vocals. There are various things I've been looking at, like just getting a USB condenser mic like the Audio Technica AT2020, but then I heard that I can get better results using a mic with the traditional XLR plug + a USB interface for roughly the same price. I saw people recommending this (Lexicon Alpha) + a Shure SM57/58. This would also allow me to do direct input the the interface without a mic for the instruments.

Also, what is the difference between a condenser mic and a dynamic one? From what I understand, condensers offer better sound quality, but are more fragile compared to dynamics. Is that it? How pronounced are the sound quality differences?

Without this getting too wordy, what exactly should I be looking for here? I'm really trying to stay under $200 ($150-175 ideally), but I don't want shitty quality either.

Also, what is the difference between a condenser mic and a dynamic one? From what I understand, condensers offer better sound quality, but are more fragile compared to dynamics. Is that it? How pronounced are the sound quality differences?

That's the layman's gist of it. Condensers require phantom power through the XLR (which on virtually all interfaces nowadays isn't a problem) and due to how they operate generally give a more open sound. Dynamics generally sound more aggressive, and people have learnt how to leverage that, using them to great advantage on everything from rap/rock vocals to kick/snare drums and cranked guitar cabs. The distinction really boils down more to what you want to record, really.

For electric guitar, you have two options, really - recording dry and using software amp simulation, or recording with a hardware amp sim. The former might be problematic since a lot of nuance isn't translated properly when you're playing with a different processing chain (especially amount of gain/od/distortion) to what it's gonna be used with during production.

My guitar setup at home actually grabs both dry and amp-sim'd signal - guitar goes into a DI, which then goes both thru to a POD as well as direct out (XLR) to my audio interface. The POD then also goes to my interface. Both signals are recorded, but only the POD output is monitored during recording.

I mainly do noise music, but sometimes remixes of popular electronic music. Currently not working on anything, apart for some branding, due to lack of creativity. But I'm hoping to get a few more tracks done soon. Some of my music is available on Soundcloud (temporary artist name): https://soundcloud.com/konformism

oh hello.
i started my musical life as a wannabe kurt cobain, 14 years of age with a horrible hand-me-down guitar and an even worse haircut. i tried my hand at the old 'being good' at an instrument but i never put the time in. still loved the thought of making music though and so i eventually enrolled into a digital music and sound art course at university. this put me on the path i'm on now, where i'm trying to get in to composing for video games and other visual media.
i've been working alongside fellow 'gaffer ashodin on his apexicon and psyscrolr projects, the latter containing loads of music by yet another neogaf guy, foshy.

here's my soundcloud alongside my last piece, a remix of a foshy track:

They're two music production threads now, so i'm posting this in both lol.

Would like some feedback/criticism. It's incomplete (not to imply i'm planning on working on it more) so that end is a bit abrupt.

Argghh, I really need to get back into my music. All I have that is half decent (I hope) is something on Soundcloud. I really need to practice more.

https://soundcloud.com/dean-rutter/against-the-tides
It's rough (single take) and I'd only been using an ebow for about 4 hours!

This sounds great! I love the atmosphere and the melodies. The thing that sours this track a bit for me is the guitarish/lead gets a little to loud for me and starts to hurt my ears a bit. Otherwise this is pretty wonderful.

New beat I just got done with. No samples, all original.

This is pretty tight. It was low key bumpin hard when that bass started kicking in.

Really cool, the middle bit with the piano I feel was the weakest part. It might just be the instrument choice that threw me off for it. The notes are cool. Overall I like it though. It's clean, and vibes well.

the hunt for good vsts is kind of annoying....

I'm way into this! I'd love to hear some more if this if you've done anything more recently. And yeah, finding good VST's is pretty hard. I have to get a VST into a mix with a bunch of other sounds before I can tell if its a quality instrument or not. Sometimes it just needs other stuff to work against and other times it's just a shitty VST. I've actually been mulling over the idea of just grabbing Komplete and calling it good, but there's a really big part of me that doesn't want anything to do with paying that much money for virtual instruments. The most I ever payed for a plugin was a $50 drum kit.

the sound quality is really good on the guitars, what type of mic are you using? i cant really say much on the melodic progression until you develop it more, just seems reptitive, a good start though.

and thank you for the praise, im still not sure what direction i should go in as i love alot of genres, and its hard to use samples and stretch it out to a 3 minute songs without it sounding repetitive.

personally i have a maschine and it comes with some of the software from komplete and i have to say its pretty amazing, their drumsynth is really good, though you can probably search for free alternatives. i'd rather use sylenth1 for 8bit sounds lol
