Naughty Dog: move to next-gen is "terrifying"

All devs have to be walking on eggshells going into next gen. Budget inflation by even a small margin could doom an entire studio. One game misses the mark and gone. I'd be more than a little worried even at the middle dev level. Big guys have big backing. I doubt Naughty Gods would be in terrible shape, but it has to be more than a little scary.

I can feel my brain melting as I read this. So many talented developers closed over stupid publisher decisions, poor marketing, etc, despite developers shipping great products.

Sad to know some people think like you do.

At the same time this generation introduced an entire new market in the Indy world and another with XBLA and motion controls. Add to it the growth in portable games, dlc, and the resurgence of PC gaming. All of which creates new revenue avenues for developers so they don't have to live and die by one major release where all their eggs are in one basket.

Plus I think it's hard to see how next gen will be as bad for developers. The hard part was getting accustomed to HD development and the new structure and resource allocation shifts it requires. This next gen will essentially be the same structure with new bells and whistles added to it. Will costs go up? Yeah probably but I don't think the cost leap will be as large as doomsayers predict.

I don´t know why they are terrified. The Ice team probably already developing an engine for the PS4. ND does not need to make new engine.

OK, this riles me every time I read it. The ICE team does not develop Naughty Dog's engine. It is developed by Naughty Dog. It is literally called the Naughty Dog Game Engine. The ICE team works at a lower level, just above the hardware, to help all developers interface better with the PS3, not just ND:

noob question: why cant sony just make the ps4 use the same software development tools as the ps3? same software but faster hardware

That's because you'll have people at GAF bitching about how the next-generation is only a half-generation.

You'd also have people that'll want to make use of the new hardware capabilities, which leads into an arms race that'll have the SDK updated eventually anyway.

Oh, this is good. It's true. Nothing wrong with that. As long as the software is good. That is what is important.

My big 1080p tv disagrees.

Can we have both? Good software and plenty of hardware? Is it too much to ask for?

Bring on the next gen consoles, I'll buy them day one.

If it is difficult for ND, then Square Enix will be capable of putting out a PS4 game ever 32 years. 25+ will go to developing super-HD towns.

Not crazy about a new gen, either. The big publishers just stick with the "GRAPHICS = INNOVATION!" mindset. I'd like 60fps too, but chances are it'll be the same lousy unoptimized fps we get now, just in slightly higher resolution.

Tech and tools, absolutely, but I think at a different level than seemed to be being referred to earlier. I don't think they're concerned about getting 'a bad box' they can't work with reasonably, I think they're more concerned about what they're going to do with all that power to produce something that makes people go 'wow' - what techniques they'll focus their r&d on, what bets to make in that respect, how to do meet their own targets and expectations within a budget etc. etc. I think they're taking it for granted they'll get a hefty bit of power they can work with, I think the scarier bit for them is delivering on what that hardware could do. Maybe we're talking past each other but that's the vibe I get.

For the last time, you are outright assuming these people ARE SCARED of doing what they do best and are professionals in. As long as their budgets stand, tech is valid and no publishers decide to fuck the project, they are golden. Stop projecting your own perception of what game developing is to these guys. Of course there is pressure in creating the next blockbuster hit and wow people, but for the creative people that is the best thing about the industry they are on.

Next gen is probably 3 console producers plus 5 major publishers. Everyone else won't be able to produce quality games regularly for these consoles.

*raising the hand*

I'm too a developper and i wanted to say i'm 100% with Gofreak on this.
ND is certainly not afraid by the next hardware architecture.

The complexity for AAA team next gen is (without the slightest doubt, IMEO ) on the data side of the things .

happy holiday from Naugthy Dog

Drake, you lucky bastard...

developers have gone out of business with EVERY new console generation. to put it bluntly, if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. it's somewhat unfortunate but true.

think of it as separating the wheat from the chaff. it sounds a bit harsh, but this is a technology driven industry. it moves fast and if you can't keep up you frankly deserve to go out of business. make room for those devs that CAN cope with advancing technology. for those that cannot, fuck you and go to hell. I have no sympathy for you.

and of course, there will still be a few Minecrafts etc. to satisfy the Luddites. or you can play NES games on your 3DS. if you despise new technology so much there will still be a few options available for you. you can play pong on your cell phone. or just forsake technology altogether, move into a cave and become a hermit. won't that be fun.

Is this a human opinion you've formed, or a joke post, or what?

you still got a lot of gaffer who said 'secret PS4 game reveal?'

edit: oh wait, are you talking about my comment that the image quality may not be that high on PS3? well, it's typical Naughty Dog cutscene quality, some say it's touched up a bit, some say it's real time, some say it use same asset, etc, I have no idea what's true or not anymore. I know the final game will look damn good though

oh, for that it's really easy, since there's papers about all that on Naughty Dog's site: The cutscene models and shaders they use are completely separate from the gameplay ones, allowing for fewer characters on screen but much better visuals. Cutscene Nathan Drake could easily power ten gameplay Nathan Drakes with the same resources.

but it's all still in real time? that's still impressive if true

Hyperbole and crap. PC gaming has been "next-gen" for a long time as far as assets and resolution go. I don't see Valve and Blizzard shitting themselves. Man up Naughty Dog.

You realize developing high end pc games is incredibly easier because PC's have like infinite RAM, right?
