Favorite thing about this app is looking at what game is popular in my area. Stardust makes number one which isn't too surprising, as it's cheap and pretty cool, but apparently I live around some Japanese heavy gamers, since for 3 days in a row Katamari and Blazblue made numbers 2 and 3 on the most players list, while Uncharted and Wipeout are around 8 or 9.

I can definitely see myself become addicted to checking that list constantly to see local game trends. I hope niche games continue to make big showings on my list, but I'm guess as more of these things make it out there that wont happen.

Top 3 games in my area:
1) Escape Plan - 16
2) Welcome Park - 16
3) Uncharted: Golden Abyss - 14

Very surprised to see Escape Plan as #1!

I love near. It's the "oh wow there are more gamers in my neighborhood than I thought" app.
That's what I thought, but it appears it adds a new 'gamer' every time someone uploads data/checks into near. Ie. multiple times per person. So it's probably more like 5-6 people in the area instead of 40.

BTW, if you are in SF, head down to Embarcadero, a bunch of the game websites (1UP, GameSpot, IGN) and some of the game companies (Ubi ... can't think of who else, but I know there are a few?) are within that area between Market and AT&T Park.

You're probably matching plenty as it is in a big city, but you'll see specific StreetPass or Near activity as you head down to like the stadium.
Great tip! I work near (not at, sadly) the Twitter main office at Folsom & 4th ST, I've gotten quite a few hits near there too. I typically get 50+ hits per Near scrub. At home I average closer to 25 - 40 depending on the time of day and all. I hope it only increases.

You probably saw this on Twitter if you follow me, but some guy on my Near only has Welcome Park, Facebook and Netflix for Vita. I checked the guy's trophies and he only has 2 games, Call of Duty World At War and some NBA2K game. A total of 3 trophies.

What the hell is this guy doing?!

That makes no sense then why buy a vita.

Prepping for Call of Duty Vita, obviously.

I'm just going by the names actually shown, not the count. It's still more than I expected around here!

Oh, and by far the most played game around here is Everybody's Golf. Pretty awesome.

Just had an awesome moment in near. I was just looking over my friends activity and saw that one of my friends downloaded a trailer that I wanted to see. So I just clicked on the icon in the activity and it took me straight to the store to the download link.

Just amazing!

So I was out again...this time when I was at another location I turned my Vita on, played some Stardust. Didn't go into near.

When I went home and went back to near, it picked up that location. Found several people there.

It didn't pick up any locations in between though. Just the one I had it turned on in.

So maybe it is something about how you put it in standby? Tomorrow I'll try without explicitly putting it to standby.

In my home location it still doesn't show any avatars though. In the other location it shows 9 or 10...I can't imagine my home location is so different.

I'm fairly sure I let mine enter standby this morning and it picked up a location on my drive to work as well as the location I was at once I'd got here this morning early and played some Motorstorm RC ;)

When I go home tonight I'll put it in standby and see what it does.

Does anyone have any experience tethering a vita to a cell phone to use near? I can't justify getting a 3g model, so what i would like to do is keep my vita attached via mobile hotspot on my cell phone. I figure if I'm on the skytrain (vancouver) it will pick up everyone i bump into along the way as long as they have 3g right?

Y U NO WORK, NEAR :|

I'm pretty convinced that on my unit, at least, near won't pick up locations if the unit is on standby. Tried today to let it go on standby on its own i.e. I didn't put it on standby, and still, it picked up no new locations while I was out.

I've only managed to get it to pick up one other location so far, yesterday, and I had my Vita on at that location. Helluva coincidence...

Is ANYONE picking up locations while their Vita is on standby? DBT85 says so, but I wonder...might your Vita still have been on by the time you got to the post office, after Tesco? It'll stay on for a few minutes depending on your settings.

Maybe I'll get rid of my privacy zone for the moment and see what happens.

Lol think near is telling me to go out more :<
on day 1 the range was 0.5km - 1km (found two people, one shared ID).
Next day 1km-2km (6 peeps, 2 shared).
Next day 2km-4km (8 peeps, 3 shared).
Next day 4km-8km (12 peeps, 4 shared).

It's kind of like it's all 'Fine, I'll move then!'
Really need to take my Vita with me more, but so afraid if it getting hurt :<

If I share my profile do people just see my PSN profile info or do they get my location aswell? It's very specific so I'd prefer to avoid that.

They can't see your location in a map. They see the distance (and only approximated) from them. Also, you can update Near only once each hour, so it should be very difficult to make Near checks in different places until you find the spot where some other player is.

13 people in my area with Uncharted being the most played.

I uploaded a few Rayman ghosts, do I get alerted if people take near goods I upload?

already had 1 person add me. actually thought it was someone from here until i checked near lol

I love seeing that there are a bunch of people nearby playing. I don't like the fact that nobody has shared anything yet! I put up a bunch of Lumines avatars and skins.

It definitely was in standby this morning when it found a location, I just cant remember whether I did it or not. In 50 minutes or so I'm going home again and I'll be putting the Vita into a forced standby and will report back when I get home. Tomorrow morning on my way back to work I'll be certain to let it enter it's own standby and will report in again.

I'm loving near, I found 4 more Stardust soundtracks today. I've no idea if it finds stuff you already own or not but that's 7 now.

This morning I got into my car at 05:55 and the Vita found me in Richmond upon Thames at 06:26 and then in Hounslow at 06:41 when I took it out of my bag to play since I was early for work. I KNOW I didn't touch it while I was driving to work and it was definitely in standby when I put it into my bag.

It's going into standby now so that it's definitely done. According to the online manual Near looks for a location every 30 minutes or so and if it's changed it logs it. It will only automatically update Near with all of yoru locations once a day on it's own.

One word for Vita: amazing..it really is more or less just about a portable PS3! Near on my system is up and running well, and I understand all the info fairly well. The one question I do have is can I expand the radius area it's looking for people in manually? Like mine is showing everyone within 1.5 miles of me (showing 10 people playing around me) so I want to know if there's any way to manually expand that to say 5, 10 miles or more? Or is that one of those things Near is setting for me and can't be changed? Once I know the answer to that I'll be all set.

Ok, I have a report to file.

My Vita was in user forced standby (pressed power button) on my entire drive home. It sat on my passenger seat all the way home and was definitely in standby.

Near recorded my locations at 18:39 (still at work), 19:09 (Just left work), and 19:50 when I turned it on when I walked in.

So my vita is DEFINITELY getting location data when in user enforced standby.

I've looked at the locations (click on the address near tells you and it will bring up a locator on Google Maps) and they are all accurate and more importantly, different.

I will note that near was running when I put it to standby. Tomorrow on the way to work I will make sure that I put it into standby and that Near is not running. On the way home I'll let it go into standby with Near not running.

Hope that's helpful.

Also, I have :) x 41 at my home and can see 12 IDs within 5km.

I wish Near would work on my PS Vita. =;(

One of the things I'm looking forward to the most.

Yeah, I s'pose. I just assumed it went by "proximity" and "games played". Can't think of any other way.

Home is good, maybe even great, at bringing folk together in concept. I haven't used it in a while and don't know any stats about it but have assumed in terms of total PS3 users that those that do use it to socialise are in a small minority. Please do correct me if you know different though.
PlayStation Home is popular beyond belief. They really should bring it to PS Vita.

i wonder how this is created. based on what information. is it cumulative and it's still tracking other people i met? or just actual numbers based on my location and radius.

I know it's a Saturday night and all, but I was still impressed when I opened Near just now and was told 156 people near me are playing. Wow! I hope this is a sign that the Vita is off to a good start.

Well the range is from the 22nd to the 25th, so I'm assuming it's commulative, at least for that period.

3G here, and I'm just really confused. The data just cannot be accurate. For example, I played a niche Turbografx PSP-compatible game, and it shows up on the top "games played" leaderboard? No way.

And why does it say 100+ people playing nearby (it's been increasing by 5-10 per day), and then I go on the radar thing, and only the same 6-8 people show up?

The radius on the radar used to be 10 miles, then it was down to 5, and now 3. So more people nearby are getting Vita, and it's just showing the nearest handful and removing the others? Why can't I get a radar with this supposed 100+ people? 100+? WHERE are they then, Near. PROVE IT.

So excuse this silly question, but how exactly does the Buzz get calculated?

yeah i noticed that now. hence why i replied to myself. ;P One of the person who added me invited me to a vita party chat. donotwant.

Further to this, this morning I put my Vita into forced standby with no apps running at about 06:10. Again it sat on my passenger seat and was deffo in standby.

I've just turned it on (08:26) and I had a message that I have 3 game goods and NEAR HAD UPDATED AND CORRELEATED on it's own. I did not expect the latter to happen while it was in user enforced standby.

The last update yesterday was at 19:50, and it updated this morning at 06:39 with :) x5 and 10 people on the map within 5KM

I was driving to work when it updated and it was deffo in user forced standby and Near was not open when I put it into that state.

When I had checked that out I also updated Near manually and the following popped up

I've also got updates at
07:09 - Work (this is accurate) - :) x 24 with 12 people on the map within 2KM
07:39 - Hammersmith flyover (I was actually at work at this time so no idea why it moved) - :) x 31 with 13 people on the map within 1KM - Also got a game good
08:09 - Work again (accurate) - :) x 24 with 10 within 2KM and 2 just outside

So the only oddity for me is that it thought I was about a mile away for one location search when I was sitting in my box at work. I'm sitting here at 5 bars and it flitting between 3G and H on Vodafone.

I've brought to you three questions today:

- Whats the difference between "Players Met" in Out-and-About and the one in Discoveries? The former is always showing a number of player for every ping/entry, while the latter is still zero for me.

- In out-and-about, are the icons and titles of history entries always tied to my own activity or does sometimes reflect the activity of others? Because so it's only reflecting mine.

- Can someone explain what constitutes as "Buzz" and warrants "Rising popularity"? I feel like I'm doing causing either so far.

I think this thread should make it more clear that Near is entirely asynchronous. When it say "N people playing" it means that that amount played in the area at some point in time, not necessarily (or even likely) right now.

A quick question, if i would want to use a Vita Wi-Fi only, and when i am about, use my phone as a hotspot. Are there any limitations to such an idea against a 3G Vita ? As in, do the 3G Vitas get extra social/online features which are not available to a Wi-Fi Vita only ? As it would probably be stupid to import a 3G Vita from the UK, and quite expensive too.
