How?

Not many people have 3D glasses, and I imagine even less can cross their eyes. And the animated gif method would be odd at best.

Oh, i thought that was what it would say on the 3DS screen. Makes sense now

With the Wii, you could have your 12 favorite things on the first page and then easily pick whatever you wanted, I want something like that. What the DSi however improved on was removing the splash screen, you could instantly pick your thing. If they combined these 2 with 3DS it would be all I'd ever need in an interface. Or basically just the ipod touch thing. Everything looking so big could mean the screen resolution is too low for it too happen, but still. They could make it easier on the user.

You could still have your favourite things on the first 3DS "page".

Now it seems they added a lot of nonsense (to people like me). Why would I want to rate my games?

That's a function of the eShop (a combination of the Wii/DSi Shop and Nintendo Channel, from what I can see) and is wholly optional. You would rate your games for fun or to inform others - the ratings are used for recommendations, IIRC.

The graphics are all too big and there is waaaaay too much visual information in there.

Sony's interfaces don't do too great a job of presenting content, but damn they're clean.

everything looks cramped. did the UI designers learn anything in their graphic design classes?

Ratings are probably for the online store. It'll be helpful to allow others to rate games so others can make good purchasing decisions...

The screen is fairly low resolution and it's a resistive touch screen, big chunky buttons will make things easier to press with your fingers.

You do realize it is on a tiny portable screen right?

You can change the size of your channels on the screen, just like on Steam. You can enlarge them to have only one row (like the DSi), or make them smaller and have a couple of rows (as seen on the screen in this thread).

But I guess it's not exactly what you wanted.

That 'clean' look always came off as empty to me, but it's probably because of the limited amount of colors the XMB uses by default. Just grey and a background.

Nintendo has a problem of making things too 'layered' (as in you first go here, and then go here, and then here), but everything always looked big and great to the eye.

Big is good, less things to hunt down. But that also means there's less stuff to see at once.

The buttons on my iPhone are much smaller and it works just fine.

Blah, that blows.

A lot of the shittiness of the UI could be alleviated with gestures.

What's the maximum rows? Any pic of that?

Yeah, the shop in particular looks atrocious, just like the DSi one. Maybe if they used the space for text and game descriptions instead of huge, ugly, shaded blocks...

so wait, the VC will be BC with the current Wii ones? Or will it be seperate, only 3DS VC?

If you connected your Wii to your My Nintendo or Club Nintendo account, and did the same for the DSi and 3DS, I'm sure they would be able to read from the same database, but I doubt Nintendo would allow that, for whatever reason.

It would be nice, though. But for now, it's just Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

Probably just two.

You change the size by pressing the grey squares on the top left of the bottom screen. I just see one big square and four small squares, so I guess it's just those two sizes.

Nintendo has had a ratings system for a long time on the Wii. It's within the Nintendo Channel. It seems like they've streamlined it on the 3DS. I rate all my games on my Wii so I'm pretty happy about this.

Also, to those of you complaining about how "big" everything is, that's probably because it makes it easier for tapping with a stylus. Everything on the DSi was rather large, too.

I like it a lot. Seems like a good upgrade from the DSi. I'm very interested in how it will all work together, specifically these character-specific channels or whatever with "Mario" and that "DK" one.

some other pics from the press kit. i think at the least the two pics of the system and the 3d slider close-up might be new

Black box looks all kinds of awesome

...and for those of you who don't know, you can arrange the structure of icons. i.e a single row ala DSi, 2 rows per page (as seen here), and 3 to a page.

honestly I don't give a fuck how a menu looks, as long as it has many functions and it is easy to navigate then it's cool

I've never seen so many people happy to play Ridge Racer.

Oh and before you ask that is really what Nintendo Utopia Europe looks like...

I must be in bizarro world. The menu seems just fine to me. Clean and slightly more colourful than the DSi/Wii menus. Easy enough to understand and navigate at least. But apparently most people here find it downright appalling. Okay...
