New Assassin's Creed Unity video details changes to parkour, stealth and combat

What they're telling you is...those numbers were all a lie. Placebo! :3
Hahaha, that would explain why i didn't need to upgrade my weapons in ac3.

And i agree with most of us here: it looks like they are fixing most of the current problems with the ip. I like the focus on ac1 to give more freedom on assassination missions.

Yeah, I like the AC games but always loathed the tail/follow missions and the combat. As slow as the first game was it had really good assassinations and it sounds like those are coming back. That, coupled with a huge 1.1 scale city and current gen power I am really excited to play it. Like, take the release day and following day off from work excited.

Don't be giving us Watchdogs hype, Ubi.

I really like that the counter has been removed.

I've been hoping that they would ramp up the combat difficulty for a long time now.

I haven't finished watching the video yet but will Assassin Recruits be in this game?

You'd have to be really bitter and jaded to not be excited for the 4th or 5th AC title in two years? lol

Sounds good on paper, but I'm way tired of the AC formula and will wait to see if they deliver.

This. I haven't liked an AC game since Revelations, primarily because Ezio has an interesting story arch. Main characters since haven't done anything for me.

There is a Max Spielberg?!?!

AND HE DOES GAME DESIGN?!?!?!

"Assassin's Creed is not a combat game, it's a stealth game. So combat should be a fail state. I mean, combat should be something that happens when you get spotted, and when you resolve combat, you should re-disappear and start the stealth mechanic over again."

That makes me really glad to hear. Sounds like they're making the best possible AC game that fixes every complaint people have had. More than just combat being fixed, the fact that you won't get a mission failed screen the second you get spotted sounds like the best change they're making. What's the point of being an open world game where you're an assassin if you have to do things exactly the way the game wants you to? Players should have a choice to how they want to approach each situation. The 100% sync mechanic is the worst thing they added to the series.

Agreed, I'm trying to 100% sync missions in AC4 at the moment, and it just sucks the fun because it usually involves me having to use a stupid tactic like getting really close to use heavy shots when really I just want to hang back and bombard from a distance, or having to get 4 chests or some shit for 100% sync within a mission. I get the idea and from a lore perspective, it works, but it just feels super restrictive.

Yeah, exactly. I actually loved a lot of things about AC4, but the restrictions on every single mission that's become a staple of the series completely drains the fun out of it. They should reward players for doing things differently and still completing the missions on their own terms, rather than forcing their hand to do things exactly the way the developers want.

I'm glad they're trying to make the missions more adaptive. Failing a mission because you didn't do EXACTLY what they wanted you to do was the most annoying shit ever in past AC games.
If they fix that and the combat system (don't give a shit about story) then they might have a real gem on their hands.

Great video. All of the changes sound really awesome. I am really glad they are starting to focus more on stealth and making the combat more challenging. While I love the series, it definitely lost the "assassin" feeling with all of the counter killing. The changes to the parkour controls also sound like they are going to solve a lot of issues that the games have had since the beginning such as running into a wall and coming to a dead stop when trying to run around a corner.

I couldn't be more excited for this game. The setting is amazing, it is next gen only, and the changes are exactly what the series has needed.

I think I buy most of what they said, except for the combat talk. I won't know for sure whether it's difficult until I try it myself, and they didn't seem quite so confident when talking about player response. Plus a lot of their talk seemed kind of contradictory, and the footage didn't exactly sell the idea of tough combat.

I really hope they stay true to their word with these changes. I've been shouting from the rooftops for years now about how desperately they need to overhaul some of the core gameplay elements of this franchise, the combat and enemy AI especially. The enemy AI was so ridiculously basic and easily manipulatable. As I said, I really hope they stay true to their word because I would love to love this franchise again, like I once did.

Also: FUCKING FINALLY, A CROUCH BUTTON/MODE!

Some of these claims about the game really have me interested, but I worry the series as a whole has a lot of the things I do not like from the titles I have played. I've really only played the first game and Bloodlines...surely the series is better than that, yeah? :P

Loving the callback to AC1 assassinations. That was the one thing where the series has completely devolved from the first game. Each target had a great build-up where you really got to know them and their motivations.

I echo others sentiments about trying to fully realize AC1's potential being the right way to go. To that end I wish they had gone for more of a Hitman style stealth system based around disguise instead of crouching behind corners (or a mix of both), but just having a dedicated stealth mode will be a big improvement. The changes they've made to the running/climbing controls sound great too. And hopefully the combat challenging, but given what he said at the end about being able to play however you want I have my doubts.

Rogue has you hunting down assassins, which seems more interesting than hunting down some Duke who just runs as soon as he sees you, so it will have an audience. Plus, Ubisoft can't resist the cheap up-port for the quick sales boost during the dry summer months.

We've been having these "hunting" missions since the first game. Why do you think they're going to suddenly be awesome in a Black Flag reskin?

New parkour system looks really impressive. They touted AC3 as a big improvement on parkour but they really just removed the use of the A button and made the animations a bit nicer. Unity really changing up parkour significantly since AC1 is impressive.

this. as repetitive as the first game often was, i loved this aspect of it, &'ve missed it ever since...

I think it's interesting you get to play as the bad guy, and what that might entail in the narrative, since the Assassins up to this point were the 'good' guys, but I will probably only check out Unity, since they can't change the fundamental problems of the series that Unity seems to be trying to rectify.

My Gods, this is saying all the right things. The primary focus on stealth, the replacement of counter-kills with parries, the adaptive missions, the sandbox assassinations, the crouch-stealth mode, last known position, the flow of parkour even when not flat against a wall, and especially the ease of descents.

Holy shit Ubi, you won me back over. I've always been a fan of AC, but every game moved further and further away from the heart of AC1 - my favorite of the whole series in terms of ambition and inspiration, just not implementation, as it was very limited and repetitive. But the feeling of being an assassin who needs to investigates the scene, come up with a plan and one who tries to avoid unnecessary attention and combat has always been the fantasy for me - not the swashbuckling, explosive tossing counter-killer of armies.

Keep the swashbuckling daring do well do the Pirate's Creed series, or whatever Ubi has in mind for future open seas piracy.

Oh man, the actually has me a little excited about this game. I'm a HUGE fan of co-op games. Between the combat, movement and stealth mechanics and having my friends int he world with me, I'm jazzed.

Hmm sounds really good the improved combat, new Parkour system and the assassin missions being more focused similar to AC 1 while making sure there is variety so it doesn't get repetitive

Lets see if they can deliver on their promises but so far its looking really good

I like a number of the things they talked about. AC definitely lost a lot of its charm when it became more about combat. Combat in AC was HARD!Then the counter came in and... well, press x to win. We've also stopped being Assassins- more being killers or errand boys.

The way the one man was kind of moving around the subject when he said, 'We focused on Stealth but you can play how you want still,' pleases me. It sounds like the game is really meant to be more like a stealth game. And I like that. After all, Ubisoft makes Splinter Cell. They know stealth. They're pretty much the go-to company for stealth gameplay... and yet they haven't done much with it with Assassin's Creed in recent times. Black Flag was brilliant, but not particularly stealthy.

So the decision to essentially 'nerf combat' is, I think, a good one. As is the redesign of the stealth mechanic. Here's hoping we can actually complete missions in multiple ways this time, though. After all, when they were talking about it in the video the Assassins went to the one super obvious spot for the assassination, hah.

I've only played 1 and 2 because I was completely burned out on the series by that point but this looks mildly interesting. It doesn't look like major changes but they look like a step in the right direction.

I might actually play this one.

"Assassin's Creed is not a combat game, it's a stealth game. So combat should be a fail state. Combat should be something that happens when you get spotted and when you resolve combat you should re-disappear and start the stealth mechanic over again."

* 20 seconds later *

"Unity is about playing the game the way you want to play it. If you want to play the game without stealth and fighting you can do that."

So...it's not a combat game and combat should be a fail state but you can play the game however you want including forgoing stealth and just going combat. Glad they cleared that up.

He clearly says right after that, that the combat is much more difficult, meaning you can play the game doing combat, but you better get real good at it, cause the incentive is for you to be stealthy., He was pretty clear with that.

He also clearly said the game was not a combat game. Either combat is a valid option or it's not. Maybe it's just me but the statements seemed completely contradictory.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. The game looks amazing and I'll be getting it day 1.

They cant rule out combat completely. That wont be fun either for the millions that play. They clearly need to strike the right balance. In past games any time you were spotted, combat was so easy you just killed everyone. In this one they are trying to get you to be more stealthy by increasing the difficulty, so if you are wreckless its game over but if you put effort into it youll come out alive, but will think twice before doing it again.

That was so rad! Establish that flow! New wall running mechanics look glorious- the ability to scale up/down and differentiate on the fly will add for some amazing traversal. Combat being more difficult will add some new strategy to the game, rather than employing stealth until you get caught and then disposing of everyone! And a return to staking out a target, planning, and feeling a real sense of importance for every target is so promising- a call back to the original Assassin's Creed finally!

I love my annual iterations of AC, But this looks like a complete overhaul of the mechanics and gameplay in all the right directions! YASSS!

Saying all the things I want to hear. Unless they're blowing smoke, this should easily be the best AC game.

Can't believe how much better it looks graphically compared to Black Flags. I hope Ubisoft isn't pulling another slow one...
