New Assassin's Creed Unity video details changes to parkour, stealth and combat

Did you even watch the video?

Yes, my point stands. There have been many broken promises in the gaming industry. Why would Ubisoft be any different? The combat system needs so much work that it will take more than the testimony of the game's developers.

Since you asked whether combat would be more challenging, I would say the removal of counter would automatically make it more challenging than previous games. Black Flag's combat is perhaps the easiest thing in videogaming. After one counter, the chain killing was entirely one hit kills. As for how much more challenging, we'll just have to wait until it comes out.

Going back to the concept of a stealth assassin is amazing in my opinion. I'll still wait until after the release, but I'm more interested now.

Nothing really new. They described very well the gameplay changes in the official websites and in an E3 interview. But since they struggle to send their messages and in-depth infos, I think it's good to explain and re-explain to people.

When they showed AC3 parkour between 2 sequences of AC:Unity, well, you can notice the gap between the 2 gen... Clipping, citizen-less, small and flat buildings (and large avenues, which reduces the density), flat lighting, eveyrhint less detailed... 2 years ago it looked amazing to me (and even today on a gamepad it looks not so bad (but my fullHD TV it looks terrible)). Even Black Flag on PS4 isn't that beautiful.

They are really targeting what the players wanted since AC:Revelations in terms of overhauling of the general game design / game mechanics. I don't know if they could have done that before, 1, 2, 3 years ago, but it will definitely enable the next-gen AC games to have a less flawed and constrained basis, especially since they tried to make a "pure" Assassin game such as AC1. They have a game design view really close to AC1 and far from the Ezio triology and the Kenway games (2, 3 counting Rogue), which developed the gameplay and especially combat, along with tricky little stealth mechanics... something that was heavily criticized among core gamers (hello gaf)

I hope we'll see more gameplay at gamescom

I also haven't seen this info mentioned any where so I guess I'll add it here as it isn't new thread worthy.

Retailers are selling/Pre-Ordering/Whatever Arnos Hidden Blade which is know as the Phantom Blade.

The Blade has a crossbow mode. It apparently takes the place of the Darts as blades can be laced with Beserk or Poison

i canceled my pre order because i didnt wanna get AC3ed again but this game sounds too good i gotta go pre order it again.
The reason i'm so confident and excited for this entry is that they're able to use the engine they built for AC3 without being hindered by last gen consoles.

The new concepts of the game seems very interesting, I just hope to see a stealth AC game, because the AC1, aside their limitations, was the only AC that can be considered a stealth game.
But until we see all these improvements in action, I'll remain skeptical.

holy shit i was kinda ugh on the constant mention of the terribad ac1 but this looks more interesting than all the ac games combined.

Man, you must have high expectations or I have low.. The game seems gorgeous to me

Ahh, lovely Wristbow. People who have played the Dishonored DLC will know how cool these things can be. Such lovely designs. Hope they don't go over board and give it explosive darts

So far, of all the AC games, Assassin's Creed 3 has been my favorite. This game may take the crown though, as all the additions look really nice.

Considering they've been promising the combat is finally somewhat challenging for every game since 2, I've kind of accepted that the combat's going to stay the same. Upgrades to the parkour and lite-RPG systems seem welcome though. Also the game really is gorgeous.

The parkour changes seem really neat/needed. It was so annoying doing that little run up a wall when you didn't want to, and the descending seems much more natural compared to always needing a hail mary dive off into a conveniently placed haystack all the time.

Still not sold on what they're saying on combat though. It's been a constant issue with the series and I feel like that's something they're talked up each release and then it comes out being a similar mess.

ACIV is by no means a very visually impressive 8th gen game outside of the water. It's not bad looking but it's nowhere near Infamous or Ryse or, yes, ACU. So I'd say you have low expectations. Not like it's a bad thing though!

Holy shit, they're actually finally fixing the stupid "accidentally running up a wall" bullshit that has plagued this series.

I am in awe.

Well, I welcome the greater focus on assassinations like in the first game, but I really wouldn't want them to lose the greater variety and more fleshed out missions of the sequel. I can't understand for the life of me why you consider the first the best in the series though. There was a specific set of missions you had to do first before doing an assassination. The problem was it was basically the same thing over and over again for an entire game.

It's like they had an idea what the core gameplay would be, but didn't get past that early concept. There isn't really a game there, just a bunch of ideas. :s

The game isn't without its faults, but I prefer it because it succeeds the most at making the player feel like an actual assassin. Ubi should have expanded upon the investigations and open-ended mission design, not thrown them to the wayside in favour of steering the series towards a more traditional action-adventure experience. Unity looks to right those wrongs and should be all the better for it.

Yeah this was annoying. I liked holding the trigger so I could take off. But if you didn't stop in advance you'd do that run up the wall thing and it just felt sloppy.

Also really glad that being spotted isn't "oops I screwed up. Start all over time!" lol

Unfortunately he followed that up with "If you want to play the game without stealth, you can!"

Yeah pretty much this.

I've basically hated every AC game ever and I just don't see how after this many games they're gonna finally do it "right". How the fuck has crouch not been a real option for this long?

Seeing how AC IV was a cross gen title and not a pure next gen game and being a huge openworld a hell lot bigger than the two titles you just said, it look's and runs fantastic enough. Unity will probably melt my eyes. Shame it won't have enough sparkling water next gen water,

Only thing that has me a bit skeptical is how he goes on to say that if you want to play the game straight up with swords and combat, you can. It completely goes against his statement of combat being a fail state. I just don't know what I can believe.

Really, really digging the 1:1 scale, climbing at an angle, and thank-goodness fixing the sprint from climb button frustrations.

The way they introduced and presented your targets in AC1 was easily the best thing about that game. The scenarios were also much more impactful, so happy to hear they are looking back on that stuff.

I am still a bit sceptical, by this time last year we saw great amount of ACIV gameplay, this yer we saw only one gameplay video.

This looks like the biggest leap forward for the series since the first one. Definitely very interested in this, combined with how good it looks. Ubisoft certainly know how to say the right things, but I am still taking a wait and see on this. I like that they are elaborating a bit more on the characters as in AC 1. The presentation of the targets was one of the innovations in the original AC that they did pretty well.

They're saying all the right things. AC's control issues have always been because the designers try and automate everything, leaving the player to just hold Right Trigger and A and hope the game understands what they're trying to do. Finally overhauling the control scheme to something that lets you clearly say "I want to run up this wall" or "I don't want to be climbing" has always been the obvious next step, but Ubisoft was so concerned with churning out a new game every single year that I never thought they'd actually do it.

I'll have to hear more about how the combat works, but it looks pretty cool in this video. I think I'm seeing a manual dodge move, which is nice (still can't believe you can't bloody dodge in AC3 and 4). It still looks like it has that hands-off feeling where you spend most of your time watching your character go through overly-long canned animations, but AC's combat has been so bad for so long that any change for the better is welcome.

I've played every mainline AC game, and for the last few years I've been telling myself, OK, this is going to be my last one. BUT THEY KEEP PULLING ME BACK IN! Hope the PC port's not shit.

Minor nitpick but I hope they fix Arno's cloak clipping through everything when he takes cover
Haha, seriously, how hard can it be to change the cover animation so the cloak doesn't clip by default.

But sounds great, glad they're returning to some AC1 stuff.

I really love the counters. solely because it made you feel like a badass...with all those satisfying animations.

Sadly though, I don't think its possible to create a challenging & intricate system in which an enemy is instantly dispatched with a simple counter. Perhaps make enemy movements less pronounced, and no floating telegraph symbols on enemy attack windups. That's I can think of, but it'd need to be tested,

This has been mentioned before but it seems like they seriously looked at Splinter Cell Blacklist in terms of stealth and decided to add those mechanics into Unity, with the improved parkour gameplay. They already redeemed themselves with Black Flag, so Unity just seems to be another way back to their prime.

I liked how they admitted the flaws of the previous games in the controls, with people running in wall when they didn't want to, or the stealth system not being really in control of the player, and how they are fixing it now.

Looks lovely - I love that they've acknowledged how annoying it was when your character started trying to run up a wall mid-chase.

Counter kills in AC4 were silly. "Oh, five redcoats? Stab-stab-stab-stab-stab done!"

I think health regenerated too quickly in AC4 too. It was a bit of an improvement on Ezio's Marvellous Medicine, but it needed work.

Combat as a fail-state?

Full stealth in an AC game? Very interesting. Don't see how it would work as well as Splinter Cell but will look forward to it.

Sounds like AC1 taken to its logical conclusion. Which is a very promising concept.

It may have not been the best-made game in the series, but AC1 is the only game that really delivered on the promise they set out on when they first introduced the series way back when. AC2 took the series in an entirely different direction and all the other games since then have made minor variations in that formula.

I'm impressed by the changes. I would prefer the Ubisoft focus on big gameplay updates like these going forward instead of messing around with useless subsystems (i.e. AC 3's crafting/convoy system).

AC will never become a hardcore game, it's simply was too mass market for that.

It can still be a fun game though, as Brotherhood aptly proved. This definitely looks like the most fun AC in ages.

All these changes sound like they're for the better, so I'm pretty excited. After AC3 I was pretty bummed out, skipped Black Flag despite hearing good things - the first main AC game I never actually bothered with.
