Yes, FFXV, that universally adored game that proved all the doubters wrong (not saying it's a bad game, just one that lived up to lukewarm expectations).
I love this narrative you're pushing that Square Enix is suffering some kind of unfair persecution by their audience. I'll believe that Square Enix can produce an amazing, modern, AAA game in a timely manner when Square Enix produces an amazing, modern, AAA game in a timely manner. Until that time I will maintain a sizable level of skepticism.
Well, your description of FFXV's reception already proves my point. FFXV's reception is pretty far from "lukewarm", that's a pretty negative spin of reality. FFXV is somewhat divisive and there are people who don't like FFXV at all (much like with even the best received FFs, like there being quite a lot of people hating on FFVI, FFVII & FFXII), but FFXV's reception is generally not lukewarm at all. FFXV got a generally positive reception (it's got a 80+ average on Metacritic and 6+ million copies shipped + sold so far, lukewarm games don't tend to do those kinds of numbers) and a lot of people who hated Episode Duscae thought the final game was at least a big improvement over that on many fronts, even if some of the criticism from that still carried over to the final game, to some degree.
You also missed my point completely with your pathetic need to attack me personally. 1) when I say that the Internet can generally be an overly negative place, I mean that GENERALLY. I don't think this applies just to SQEX or feel the need to make such an argument because I felt FFXV got undue criticism. I do believe that this overt negativity fills way too much of the Interwebz (note: I don't think legit, level-headed, well argued criticism falls under this). Quite a lot of people have lost all sense of reason and just spew stupid shit without stopping to think of anything they write. Of course there's some overt positivity/hype as well and that can lead to other kind of over the top negativity (see: GameSpot & Twilight Princess 8.8 score, was it, and the shitstorm it caused by fans who thought it should get 10.5/10 at the very least), but I was making arguments of why SQEX might not want to show FFVIIR extensively yet, so the over the top doom & gloom that Internet in large is prone to do would be more of an issue to worry about for the PR department if they feel that too many things are still a WIP and don't show the game in the best light than people getting too excited.
2) I wasn't talking about the legitimacy of a lot of the actual level-headed criticism towards FFXV during the 2-3 years before its release (or how much of it was at least somewhat correct even after release), even if I disagreed with a lot of it. I think a lot of the criticism on FFXV around Episode Duscae's release and ~the year after was more or less warranted and some of it wasn't (fully) fixed in the final game either, I was more talking about the over the top doom & gloom reactions that FFXV suffered from because they were showing such an incomplete version of the game that had some issues. How every issue, big or small, was turned into proof that the game is guaranteed a sub 60 metacritic average on release and how FFXV was surely going to be destroyer of the FF franchise. Even when things were explainable by some logic, that didn't matter to some, it's shit-on-FFXV time. Episode Duscae's combat system was a bit barebones, but no, it didn't matter that we knew about some additional features that could help with some issues and how games often go through balancing that would likely make some ED issues less of an issue. No, it was totally unfixable shit and means d00000m for the final game. And take the Gamescom/Dawn controversy. Legit criticism that I personally agreed with was that it was kind of annoying from SQEX to return to being so tight-lipped about FFXV after they had been showing Episode Duscae for 10-11 months. It could be explained logically by them resetting its hype cycle and starting it as if it was something they hadn't been showing regularly for almost a year already. It was arguable if that was a good move or not (I didn't like the decision, but I could live with it), but some people just went apeshit insane about how SQEX is the worst, most incompetent company ever because the Dawn trailer didn't show 10 minutes of gameplay & story and were certain we wouldn't see FFXV until literally, like, 2019 or something. That just isn't logical. That's the kind of over the top negativity I'm talking about.
