Yes, FFXV, that universally adored game that proved all the doubters wrong (not saying it's a bad game, just one that lived up to lukewarm expectations).

I love this narrative you're pushing that Square Enix is suffering some kind of unfair persecution by their audience. I'll believe that Square Enix can produce an amazing, modern, AAA game in a timely manner when Square Enix produces an amazing, modern, AAA game in a timely manner. Until that time I will maintain a sizable level of skepticism.
Well, your description of FFXV's reception already proves my point. FFXV's reception is pretty far from "lukewarm", that's a pretty negative spin of reality. FFXV is somewhat divisive and there are people who don't like FFXV at all (much like with even the best received FFs, like there being quite a lot of people hating on FFVI, FFVII & FFXII), but FFXV's reception is generally not lukewarm at all. FFXV got a generally positive reception (it's got a 80+ average on Metacritic and 6+ million copies shipped + sold so far, lukewarm games don't tend to do those kinds of numbers) and a lot of people who hated Episode Duscae thought the final game was at least a big improvement over that on many fronts, even if some of the criticism from that still carried over to the final game, to some degree.

You also missed my point completely with your pathetic need to attack me personally. 1) when I say that the Internet can generally be an overly negative place, I mean that GENERALLY. I don't think this applies just to SQEX or feel the need to make such an argument because I felt FFXV got undue criticism. I do believe that this overt negativity fills way too much of the Interwebz (note: I don't think legit, level-headed, well argued criticism falls under this). Quite a lot of people have lost all sense of reason and just spew stupid shit without stopping to think of anything they write. Of course there's some overt positivity/hype as well and that can lead to other kind of over the top negativity (see: GameSpot & Twilight Princess 8.8 score, was it, and the shitstorm it caused by fans who thought it should get 10.5/10 at the very least), but I was making arguments of why SQEX might not want to show FFVIIR extensively yet, so the over the top doom & gloom that Internet in large is prone to do would be more of an issue to worry about for the PR department if they feel that too many things are still a WIP and don't show the game in the best light than people getting too excited.

2) I wasn't talking about the legitimacy of a lot of the actual level-headed criticism towards FFXV during the 2-3 years before its release (or how much of it was at least somewhat correct even after release), even if I disagreed with a lot of it. I think a lot of the criticism on FFXV around Episode Duscae's release and ~the year after was more or less warranted and some of it wasn't (fully) fixed in the final game either, I was more talking about the over the top doom & gloom reactions that FFXV suffered from because they were showing such an incomplete version of the game that had some issues. How every issue, big or small, was turned into proof that the game is guaranteed a sub 60 metacritic average on release and how FFXV was surely going to be destroyer of the FF franchise. Even when things were explainable by some logic, that didn't matter to some, it's shit-on-FFXV time. Episode Duscae's combat system was a bit barebones, but no, it didn't matter that we knew about some additional features that could help with some issues and how games often go through balancing that would likely make some ED issues less of an issue. No, it was totally unfixable shit and means d00000m for the final game. And take the Gamescom/Dawn controversy. Legit criticism that I personally agreed with was that it was kind of annoying from SQEX to return to being so tight-lipped about FFXV after they had been showing Episode Duscae for 10-11 months. It could be explained logically by them resetting its hype cycle and starting it as if it was something they hadn't been showing regularly for almost a year already. It was arguable if that was a good move or not (I didn't like the decision, but I could live with it), but some people just went apeshit insane about how SQEX is the worst, most incompetent company ever because the Dawn trailer didn't show 10 minutes of gameplay & story and were certain we wouldn't see FFXV until literally, like, 2019 or something. That just isn't logical. That's the kind of over the top negativity I'm talking about.

Not sure if i like the direction they are taking but i'll reserve my opinion until i see this in motion.
It seems Nomura was ready to show gameplay but they didn't let him,i assume they are preparing to go all-out during E3.

Looks great. Too bad we probably still have to wait at least 2 more years till this game is out, and only 1 episode, damn : /

Please tell me to attack while it's tail is up!

As for everything else, I am growing less and less concerned about the details and more just worried about the game ever being finished. After so many games not being finished this gen, this looks like another where that could happen. Give me whatever just make sure it is done and complete first.

The question you're failing to ask is why a mechanic like this is even necessary in a JRPG not whether or not it is a tutorial but rather what purpose does it even serve and does it add anything of value to the game. Especially if is like in 13 or 15 when one of these mechanics is something used only a handful of times in the games and generally serves no added purpose other than to be there for the sake of it.

Not dissimilar to the "walk under the broken arch" thing seen in the original trailer.

For some reason you're suggesting this kind of mechanic is actually going to be worthwhile in a game like these but I suspect if you actually tried to justify why that would be and actually think about it you may have some trouble

I'm sorry I'm not that clueless to believe that is even remotely in the realm of possibility. I was done having blind faith in square since 2008 sorry they need to earn my trust back.
FFVII Remake is an action RPG. Positioning, avoiding damage & such are important parts to action RPG combat. Covers are one way of avoiding gun fire & other enemy projectiles/long range attacks. I don't understand this irrational hate against a character taking cover from gun fire. It can just be a way of giving the players some room to breathe and figure out their next course of action amidst all the acton vs. not having any shelter and being bombarded with gunfire constantly.

I am open to what square will do with this remake. it's a very ambitious project just by choosing to remake a heavy content game like FF VII. I really hope they deliver, fans of FF deserve this game to be great

They do have some sort of ATB system still. Judging from the UI on the bottom right, my wild guess is theyre using something similar to FF13 where the ATB gauge charges and can stack multiple times for you to input your commands.

Yikes. is there some reconstructing going on, the IQ is very fuzzy. Also noticing some nice looking PBR and some really bad looking PBR in the same shot, the boxes look flat, the shitty looking floor looks like someone spent a year waxing it and that one metal thing on the rightside of the screen seems to reflect light the way you expect metal to.

Also don't really like the diagonal UI, it looks really dumb. I'd also like if the entire ui was centered left rather than spread out on opposing ends of the screen, though I suppose if you only control one character at a time in real time it's not gonna be hard to keep track of who you're playing as, but still.

Basically, this looks early as fuck.

It's probably realtime, but with the ATB timer designating when you can actually use attacks, sort of like a more action oriented FFXII I'm guessing. Which would be a totally fine compromise between actual ATB battles and realtime imo :)

Well in FFXIII the camera is like this when you are using the commands

And when your character attacks the camera follows it

We've seen footage where enemies are all around Cloud. Also, Nomura has said the combat is somewhere between KH and Dissidia, and both those games have manual movement. So I don't think movement will be fixed like FFXIII.

The reveal trailer basically said to brace yourself so none of this is bothering me.

There's other JRPGs out there that has turn based that will satisfy my craving, at the very least it's nothing like XV from the sound of it.

I'm not even sad about this. But I'm really sad that SE seems to be unable to deliver a fun combat system.
FFXV is fun. Kingdom Hearts is fun. Lightning Returns was great from a combat POV even if the rest of the game was meh.

They know how to make good action RPG gameplay. Not always perfect on all fronts, but they've done plenty of good action RPGs.

And this game will have magic, summons, materia, control over different characters, limit breaks, level ups & all that, so your complaints about not having "RPG elements" is extremely dumb & ignorant, since it'll have pretty much everything (or close to it) the OG FFVII had as far as gameplay elements go, it's just dressed up in modern action RPG form and not people standing in one place in a separate battle screen, waiting for a meter to fill up.

Well... I dont expect much of the combat after XV (and playing KH back then, ugh) but I hope they got at least the other parts of the game right. Screens look okay.

Better than nothing? :D
I like the boss battle screenshot.
The other not so much because I don't want the game to be filled with useless stealth sections.

You just made your own point. VII had different camera angles for each scene which conveyed a different mood and really showed off the bizarre world we were visiting. Remake on the other hand has this bland Unreal Engine look to everything, it's no longer unique like the original game or pushing any boundaries.

Can you look at the shots in the OP and think they'll do justice to the Honeybee Inn or the dolphin scene in Junon?

We're still talking about "Bland UE looks" in 2017?

This strengthens the rumor that we would get two trailers this year, right?

One trailer that's gameplay heavy, and a cinematic trailer that shows Tifa and Aerith.

The latter most likely will be in Sony's E3 event, the former for Square's E3 stream the day after.

The HUD is the best thing about this picture.
YESSS
That means it plays like KH and battles are seemless, i.e. no "battle mode" like Crisis core.
Full ARPG YESSSSSSSSSSS no compromising bs

edit: i just realized that I'm stupid. The first trailer had the same HUD too. And that dynamic camera angle in the boss fight makes me think it might not be as action rpg-y as i would like. shit

I really hope so.

I really hope so.

It must be incredibly obvious to Square: the next big trailer will officially debut the Remake look of one of the most popular videogame heroines of all time and the single most anticipated character reveal.

And also Aerith. For like, the people who like her, I guess.

Cait Sith would have been just as acceptable, but okay.

kidding.

Ehhh still not seeing anything that justifies a remake. Not impressed by much of anything yet

One of the more unique aspects of FFVII's presentation was the dieselpunk art direction. Most mistake it for steampunk, but it's more in line with dieselpunk.
I really hope they manage to retain that in the remake, and that it doesn't get lost in pursuit of a more "realistic" visual style.

I am really disappointed in the lack of turn based combat from square. May as well play the original and forget this update

I believe we'll continue to see AAA SE games take a more real-time action based approach while their smaller development teams pump out turn based games like Setsuna.

Isn't part of the appeal of the original FFVII (and VIII and IX) the cinematic and painterly views? You're missing the point.

there is no chance, even a tiny slim chance, that they are returning to those kind of beautiful and cinematic artistic views.

It makes me cry....
I wanted turn based and a return to those beautiful backgrounds, bring back 2d backgrounds with fmv! let the artists run wild in hd!

Not super pleased with how Midgar looks in the gameplay trailer and now here. It lacks the grime and lived in feeling from the original. I understand this is not the slum area tough. Hopefully they can represent that aspect properly. The juxtaposition between above and below the plate was something I was really looking forward to.

The first shot is a weird choice, makes it look like a fan-made Unreal conversion. Nice to see that they got crates covered, but they don't even look that good for crates.

I regret that I was hoping for FFVI and FFVII.
Now I just hope they forget about FFVI's existence.

VI Remake is by far my most desired remake. Do I think SE would do it justice? Probably not. But that doesn't diminish the greatness of the original. What even a subpar remake would do would be to afford me another opportunity to encounter the game and try and recapture some of the initial magic through a fresh lens. Just the opportunity is enough for me, and, again, if they fail, so what? VI is still a masterpiece.

If they do remake VI, would they try and shoehorn in action combat? Given the size of VI's cast, and the cartoonish and abstracted nature of the battles, it's hard to imagine how that would work. I think there's at least a chance it could for VII given how they tried to root the aesthetic of VII's battles in flashy semi-realism.

Man, reading this thread....I'm getting some serious Versus dejavu going on right now.

I just cannot put any stock to whatever Nomura says or shows anymore.

Looks at early development and since the announcement they just showed the same areas
Yep, it's a Nomura game

People complain about SE, but Nomura is the biggest problem. Just compare how Tabata was always doing interviews, making videos to talk about the game and even released two demos of FF XV
And then just at this or even Kingdom Hearts 3. This one at least has the excuse of being announced at the end of 2015, but KH 3 will make his 4th anniversary during the E3
