I miss Ren and Stimpy...real classic cartoon sensibilities :(

Btw I've never seen or heard of that Foster's thing but its actually a pretty nice style. Reminiscent of some early television cartoons, or some of the more experimental Disney styles. Just sayin.

In the last ten years alone, this will be the 2nd Ninja Turtles, this year will launch the 3rd spider-man, two batmans, and 3 x-men cartoons. There are tons, you're just not subjected to them apparently.

That just means they keep recycling the same properties over and over and is not indicative of more animation in general being produced.

This site does a good job chronicling everything that comes out. http://www.animated-divots.net/chronst.html

Compare the output from the 90's to today yourself. As the years go on, fewer and fewer western animated projects come out. And this is despite the fact that dedicated children's networks are more prevalent than ever.

Last year, between the US and Canada, we got 12 brand-new shows. Compare that to say, 1993 - a year in which we got 33 brand new shows.

The reason for the increased output during that time was because this was the period many refer to as the "second renaissance" in animation, which began in the late 80's when Disney got their groove back(in full-length features, as well as television). Other companies, notably WB, benefited greatly from this as well. Following Disney's resurgence, there was suddenly a huge demand for more animation all over the industry, hence the reason for the disparity. Alternatively, this is also the reason why the market for adult animation like 'The Simpsons' was created, and also the reason why we started domesticating Japanese animation on home video. It was all a product of the 'boom' period, which had mostly subsided by the time the early 00's came around.

Oh, well yeah, for sure they're reusing things a fuck ton. But there's still a ton of recent cartoons. Even if there is still less new ones a year, I still feel like there is no way there aren't more currently running (meaning new episodes being produced) cartoons.

Most of the cartoons from the 80's and 90's where 30 minute comercials. Very few of them stand the test of time or they where pretty shitty to begin with.

Is the change in cartoon style just a natural change that happens in animation every ten years or so, or is it because it is cheaper to producer? Because it certainly looks that way...

It's connected to a ton of shit.

Like how a lot of western cartoons started looking like anime because anime was the hot thing. Then when that bubble popped things changed. Some look like cheap flash, some look good and so on.

The new hot thing seems to be 3D animation ... and from what lil I know that still cost more but the heads are thinking that that's the route you have to go to stay in the game (That was at least the WB guy's reasoning for making the new GL cartoon CGI. Transformers are doing it, TNMT is doing it, it's a success with SW and such and such. .)

This is also correct.
Those cartoons were cheap and fast stuff.

I don't really know shit about comics, but that looks pretty cool. I would probably buy that. Just out of curiosity, if nothing else. Traditional comic art doesn't do anything for me, but that's interesting looking.

don't know if i just said something lolworthy for those who follow this stuff
don't care

Looking at the whole thing, it's clear that it's something that was just thrown together with whatever - there probably wasn't a final version of Shredder available for that concept mess so they threw that in.

Should wait for a final render.

How successful is Clone Wars? Is it breaking ground with its animation, or do people just go to it because it is Star Wars?

Best looking CGI on TV. A lot of times it looks like a feature animated film.

Also, it's incredibly violent, which can be off-putting or exciting depending on who you are.

(aka the worst animated show on TV today),

Oh, did they finally cancel Johnny Test?

anyways shredder looks bad, really surprised this got approved by anyone. I mean the turtles look alright for a chunky CGI styled ninja turtle thing, but fuckin Shredder. Jesus.

EDIT- I also sincerely hope that CGI isn't what executives think they need to stay in the TV animation game. Once it a blue moon it looks alright (Clone Wars aint bad) but 99% of the time it looks like a bad art student project.

I hate that the show is CGI, I'd rather see another traditionally animated turtles show.

Traditional animation is dead for western animation, unfortunately. Outside of shows like Avatar and Thundercats, everything is done in Flash or CGI now.

I don't think this is true for 2D cartoons.
Like at all.

(not saying there aren't some, but you're ignorant as shit if you think its everything that isn't action cartoons)

There's no such thing as "true" Shredder being adapted properly.

I mean, none of the toon Shredders die at the first episode :P

With that said, 2K3 was close enough to get rid Shredder roughly around the first arc.

But Flash brought us the first season of Superjail, which was pretty fucking amazing.

Avatar was such a breath of fresh air...sigh

If I ever manage to be super-successful (bwahahaha) or just come across a ton of money, I'm making a traditional, hand-drawn cartoon of exceptional quality. I don't care if it has to go straight to DVD.

Here's a crazy idea....

HOW ABOUT THEY JUST PUT THE OLD FUCKING TMNT CARTOON OUT AGAIN AND AVOID THIS KIND OF SHIT?

I guarandamntee if NiCK were to start a channel that aired 80s and 90s action cartoons and anime, it would be even more successful than their own dedicated network. There's a reason all the younger kids in my family enjoy the cartoons I grewup with opposed to the garbage that's out there now.

Toonami Aftermath needs to become a legit Network : (

A channel that airs 80s and 90s cartoons would not remotely be successful because cartoons from the 80s and 90s are, for the most part, unwatchable garbage.

Dragonball
Dragonball Z
Batman TAS
X-Men
TMNT
Sailor Moon
Ronin Warriors
G Gundam/Wing
Tiny Toon Adventures
Animaniacs

Just a few obvious ones that come to mind, and you dont think they would be successful? Dude, NickToons marathons DB Kai along with the movies every other day it seems. Surely thats not because nobody gives a damn?

1) why do they try a shitty reboot of TMNT every couple years?

2) those character models look worse than Reboot/Beast Wars.

Because the old cartoon is fucking stupid. Try and watch them now with the nostalgia goggles off.

Thank goodness you aren't the head of Nick.

End of license/contract.

Boo this thing. He looks like a low budget version of Transformers Prime's Megatron design or something.

Better yet, boo this show. Going from 2K3 to a show that's trying to emulate the 80s show is going to be rough. Say goodbye to decent TMNT animation. :(

Edit: I should mention that the quality of this render probably isn't indicative of the final one. However, it is likely indicative of the design. This art is a promo piece put together for a TMNT Nick show based ride :(

Is the show using Final Fantasy VII character models? Yikes!

I stopped following TMNT several years ago, so I have a question: did they ever released a cartoon based on the original comic books, with its atmosphere?
I remember that when I was a kid, and a big TMNT fan, my aunt bought me two issues of the original comic book (I think there was also a third one released here but I missed it :(). I was surprised and shocked how brutal and gritty the comic books were. Not only Shredder basically died in the first issue (after quite brutal fight), but the biggest change was Baxter.

In the cartoon and comic books back then this was Baxter - a campy and clunky harmless nerd, your stereotypical cartoony scientist:

This was Baxter in the comic book - a cunning genius who was using his inventions to rob banks and then tried to murder April after she found out about him; also, his Mousers were fucking terrifying:

The 2K3 series loosely adapted a lot of the elements of the comics including many of the plots, but IMO it skimped entirely on the 'atmosphere' in favor of something more easily digested for children. Which is understandable, I suppose.

Ideally, they would produce some direct-to-video animated movies aimed at the older crowd, much like Warner/DC has with it's comic properties.

You are describing exactly what Nicktoons originally was, and what Boomerang currently is.

There is a reason why Nicktoons airs original productions.

Dragonball
Dragonball Z
Batman TAS
X-Men
TMNT
Sailor Moon
Ronin Warriors
G Gundam/Wing
Tiny Toon Adventures
Animaniacs

Almost all of these shows have extensive licensing issues that would prevent them from appearing on a Nick channel. Batman, Animaniacs, and Tiny Toon Adventures are all Warner (who owns Cartoon Network) properties that they aren't going to allow their direct competition to air. The company who distributed G Gundam, Gundam Wing, and Ronin Warriors no longer exists in a capacity other than to hawk current Japanese productions on TV. Sailor Moon has been in licensing hell since like 2003, and Disney owns X-Men now, who have their own networks like Disney XD.

Assuming you mean TMNT 2K3, that show likely will air on Nicktoons. If you mean Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then there's also some legal issues regarding that as well.

^ actually, 'NickToons' as a brand was created to showcase Nickelodeon's original, in-house animation. It started with Ren & Stimpy, Doug, and Rugrats, which were all original productions at Nick.

Before that, they DID air cartoons, but very few of them were cast-offs. A lot of them were foreign productions like Mysterious Cities of Gold(France/Japan), The World of David the Gnome(Spain), Danger Mouse, Bananaman, and Count Duckula(Britain), Noozles, Little Koala, Maya the Bee(Japan again), and Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea(France).
