Ouch, hope this doesn't mean the end of Bugbear :(

They were doing so well with the Flatout games, then Namco had them do all things wrong to Ridge Racer...

Was this project too ambitious?

Ouch

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say it's down to the new DX11 renderer. They've implemented it now, and it's the foundation for some fantastic work, but because it's new I bet they just haven't caught up to the quality of their previous work.

Wow, not at all what I was expecting. It's just a hard pill to swallow that they're starting over in such a big way when the game hasn't been updated at all in over half a year.

Are those screenshots real? This looks like FlatOut 2. :|

I regret buying this in early access. I expected a bit more after about 9 months of nothing.
You shouldn't go EA when you want to overhaul your whole engine.

How the game have improved in 17 months

You know, from this early game

No max settings, more than 100 fps downsampled

to this (same location)

New update max settings (game has a lot of stuttering because these incredible textures don't fit in my 2GB gpu)

Wreckfest%2525202015-07-02%25252001-46-09-70.jpg

New update max settings + MSAA + alpha AA in vegetation (really, no joking)

I don't understand why they would release the update in such a state after so many months of nothing. Was so excited for this update and their teasing gave no hints that it'd be so early on.

Oh well, hopefully the game is grand in another year and a half.

People are jumping to some crazy conclusions here. Why would any of this mean the end of Bugbear? They just implemented a new renderer on a work in progress game, of course it's gonna have some kinks to iron out and more graphical features to be added in. I understand how some people may have wanted more out of the update, but proclaiming doom here is beyond absurd.

The game has a long way to go, it's early access.

This game is so confusing now, the earlier build was great and it looked great, fuck it ran great too. Big crashes into walls of tires looked spectacular, all that was missing was content, ai tweaking and netcode tweaking. Tracks, cars and gamemodes. I dont understand why they rebuilt the physics and lighting models.

Just perplexing, fucking heated about this, this game was all set to be god tier.

What the fuck have they done

The only logic explanation is that someone inside is sabotaging decisions. I hope being wrong, because I paid a good game that now is impossible to play.

.... what if they are jumping to the console train and they have redesigned the engine to reduce the cpu bottleneck the old one had....

I must admit this crossed my mind. If that was indeed the case, I hope they can get the game back to where it was. The huge amount of debris flying around the place was a large part of the appeal to me.

I'm not too worried because the game is a long way off. It's a shame that the first update in a long time has to be a step backward though.

Man I wish I was eligible to get a refund for this game. Nothing but disappointment since the day I bought it

Or.....they created a new renderer and are busy making updates to it etc. They essentially started from scratch again and it's going to take time to get up to par with the old one, we just never usually see the results this early.

I'm pretty confident in BugBears technical capabilities and how they'll iterate on it. Surely that's what you want to see in the early access period, the actual development of how the game comes together ? Bumps and all ?

They should've stuck to arcade racers. FlatOut and Ridge Racer Unbounded were absolutely fantastic games (picture Unbounded as its own title, and you'll feel better about it.) Plus, we already have far too many simcade games now.

Wreckfest has been and is still just a very pricy tech demo that's shown very little progress for the past year and a half its been in Early Access.

I have very little hope of it ever becoming anything substantial. :\

I hope this gets somehow solved, Wreckfest was something I always wanted and those screenshot comparisons (and reports) are making me kinda sad.
=(

Generally you want to see incremental improvement as the game leads up to the full release, not a huge downgrade.

It wouldn't be frustrating if their update from a week or two ago(the first in months) hadn't hyped it up as being a huge technological improvement without any of the inherent flaws or hinting at how early it was going to be.

Just wish they would have been more honest about what was happening in the first place. Complete radio silence for months.

To be fair, they have posted to the blog over the months and we've known for ages that the lack of updates to the game is because they've been working on the new engine.

Different time 9 day and lighting, different perception. They proof nothing. And I wonder which monster machine you had to run the game downsampled at more than 100fps because with my 980 and my i5 at 4.3 GHz at max settings I could barely hit 60fps in most races with lots of other cars and grass and shit.

From shadows it looks like it's the same time of day and it's the same track. The textures are super low-res in new version. From the update notes it looks like they remade this track completely, but I have no idea why. Worse textures, a lot of props are missing.
Hopefully the new engine will allow for faster and better development, because so far this game is getting less fun with every update. The most fun I had was in the white debug level it started with., which was my reason to buy this game.

Yeah, I loved the rollicking glory of the early builds, but it has sadly and progressively gotten more staid and boring. A massive shame.

What the?

I know that game existed because I got it and played it on my old computer. And it ran surprisingly well! So it's not just another lying downgrade-gate. What is going on???

valouris

Member
No offense but this is what happens when you buy early access.

People shouldn't even be thinking of them as games to be honest.

This was a perfectly working game when it came out. All that was required were more cars, more stages, and some sort of single-player campaign/mission/grand prix mode.

Kikorin

Member
I don't understand why people are going crazy. It's far from relase, it's an early access game, obviously they are going to try different things before the final relase. This means better or worse performance and graphics during time, early access are useful for this, if you want the stable and final game, wait for the final relase (like I'm doing).

Someone even says this would mean the end of Bugbear lol, hyperbole everywhere.

SmokyDave

Member
I can live with the downgrade because I believe it's in service of something greater and it'll be upgraded again in due course. I kinda wish they'd communicated clearly prior to the update what was happening and what to expect though.

So another 8 month delay to move to DX12 incoming then?
If that's what it takes, that's what it takes. I'd rather that than a rushed and buggy transition.

The tech preview with physics cannon alone was worth my money. The final game will just be a bonus.

I would gladly take a good game, if it takes longer then okay. But imo this has been getting worse with each update.

Bydobob

Eagerly clicked on this thread hoping to hear news of an exciting update, boy what a disappointment. Graphics from the early access looked fabulous given all the carnage that was going on, engine seemed like the last thing that needed an overhaul. I'm not jumping to conclusions yet but can certainly understand the suspicion.

low-G

Has the CPU utilization gone down or anything at all?

Maybe it is simply a case of perfectionism, but they could have made more tracks for the old engine & made a full DX11 game instead...

TheCrow

Yeah, I'm not surprised that a game in active development will go through all kinds of new builds. Happened with Rust and it took a while before they got back to feature parity to the original version.

whilst there's something definitely not right, those are some hilarious cherry picked shots, the inclusion of aa makes the game looks much better (was a jagged mess at 4k before) in motion, the lighting's definitely not as good but every game i see you post on, you're using a reshade config, why not now? it can at least alleviate it

Sendou

So to recap people are panicking because they took long time to update and when they finally did the game looks worse? Seems consistent with the fact that they moved the game to a new engine, no?
