With a previous website I worked for, I forced everyone to permanently drop the term once late February rolled around. The consoles were all out, and while the games might not be the epitome of what we expect from "next-gen," the fact of the matter is that we're in that generation now.

But I don't think it'll ever really get dropped. In two years you'll be talking new Wii and 360, so even if calling the current set of systems dies down, it'll be waiting right around the corner.

ps2/xbox/gamecube were still being called "next gen" throughout 2002 and into 2003. somehow we all survived.

Actually "next gen" kinda stuck with Xbox/PS2/GC gen till about early 2002ish on the boards, if I remember correctly. It'll die out on its own.

The problem is that the PS2 (which should technically be last-gen) is still outselling the 360 and PS3, and the Wii isn't really "next-gen" in many people's minds since most of its games don't even look better than what last-gen put out, and most games coming out like Stranglehold, Call of Duty 4, Army of Two, Star Wars Force Unleashed, Fallout 3, etc are on PS360 and not on Wii. If the PS2 was dead and the Wii was up to current standards, I'd think we'd stop seeing "next-gen" plastered on things.
