I wonder if they'll actually cut back on the cast quite a bit. Especially if people are going to be able to fight with their customized Mii characters.

I wonder if Snake is going to be cut in the next Smash Bros. He hasn't been on a Nintendo console in years, and MGS is pretty much a solid HD console game now, with only a port on the 3DS coming.

I think Sonic is a shoe in to stay, and they'll probably even throw in Metal Sonic or Shadow as a second character from Sonic.

We'll probably also see Layton and someone from Dragon Quest represented. Those two series have maintained on Nintendo systems for awhile now, and are beginning to become almost Nintendo franchises.

I see third parties as being a major role in the next Smash Bros. This generation more than any generation has shown companies are willing to let other companies use their IP if it's done properly and used as good marketing.

Well, if they are going to add more 'non-Nintendo' characters, we better have this guy.

Anyway, I'm curious how the 3DS compatibility will work for this game... of course, they can't fit the entire WiiU game onto the system, so are we talking two separate games?

In that one early interview with Sakurai, they seemed to be going in the direction of two different games. Both would be apparently feature full and standalone, however, the 3DS one would be more single player focused, with some kind of customization system that could be "shown off" in the WiiU version.

Of course, they apparently hadn't even started production at that point, so they were just throwing ideas around and the final result could be very different.

I wonder if they'll actually cut back on the cast quite a bit. Especially if people are going to be able to fight with their customized Mii characters.

When Brawl was announced, Sakurai talked about how he didn't know if he'd surpass Melee's line up. He said the same thing about the new Smash now, saying that just adding more characters isn't what he's planning... However, really, unless we get a completely new game next time that's only connected to the previous Smash by brand name, there's no reason to cut back the cast like that. As long as it isn't a completely new gameplay engine, cutting the cast is just a waste.

I really want Ridley to be a character, the awesome looking Ridley, not the one with down syndrome who has a steroid problem from Metroid: Other M.
Any character from Golden Sun would be perfect.

The only clone I find unacceptable is Ganondorf. Considering his history, there is no fucking excuse that he's a clone of captain falcon of all characters.

Transfer Ganons moveset to Samurai Goroh, and give Ganon a real, unique moveset. Problem solved.

Wolf has so many subtle differences to his entire moveset that calling him a clone for having a Fire Fox-like, blaster and reflector is a bit uninformed. At the same time though, one has to call a spade a spade and acknowledge that although he shares the least in common with Fox, you can see the roots for it in his gameplay.

Ike being a clone of Marth is just straight shenanigans however.

Edit: I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for this, but the Toon/Young Link slot is better served being an alt for Link overall and putting a unique 4th entity in for the Zelda series. I'm kinda surprised that didn't happen with Brawl to put Midna in to this day. It's also surprising that they had Toon Link and didn't play up anything from the Windwaker instead going as far as to make a floatier/more maneuverable and oddly heavier hitting Link instead. If that's what it's going to boil down to then they'd be better off making Link somewhere between Link in every smash and Toon Link in Brawl, brushing up his tools (there's no goddamn excuse for his clawshot being so slow/having so much recovery when in game that shit is instant, also give him the double clawshot dammit, raise his running speed, bring back L-Cancelling so he isn't horrible coming out of the air with any aerial, etc.) and making a happy middleground Link with Skyward Sword influences.

Zelda needs this as well (sorry Sheik players). Spellcaster Zelda using all the series trademark magic and whatever debuts in Skyward Sword > Zelda/Sheik switching simply because it offers something new and a real chance to be creative as fuck with her moveset.

I already mentioned my thoughts on Ganondorf, but to sum it up, he should be a brusier magician. He's portrayed as enough of a brute in game to justify haing some "I'm just going to walk up to you and beat the fuck out of you" moves, but he definitely needs to lose a ton of the C. Falcon cloned moves.

I would love to see Lyn make it, but can't see it happening with the reasoning being something like "oh there's already two FE characters based around swordplay and Lyn starred in a game whose time has come and gone." :(

Takamaru is my only hope of getting that high speed quick draw fighting style in this series, isn't he?

They should just use Hector, since he's the only lord from that game that didn't suck. Granted, blue hair, but he had an axe.

Motherfucking Hector up in here.

I'd like to see Sami from Advance Wars too. <3 Sami.

Also remove the instant skill Final Smashes they're just silly. And I would like it if the Starfox cast had their own separate Final Smash instead of just LANDMASTER.

Forget King K rool. CAPTAIN K Rool is the right choice.

That's a strange way of saying "buff her back to melee levels".

What I would really like, more than anything, would be for someone like Capcom to handle the balancing while Sakurai focuses on putting in fun things. There's no reason why casual Smashers and hardcore Smashers can't coexist. The variability of Smash is one of its strong suits.

Not cool.

Totally random but this quote reminds me of something. There are probably Smash players out there right now young enough to not understand the joke with getting a Goldeen from a Pokeball.

Kirby N64 was fucking insane. Short hopped down air infinites were fucking amazing to 10 - 11 year old me. :lol

I really want to see a Magikarp from a Pokeball. It'll flop around for a few seconds, but if any player hits the Magikarp, it'll evolve into a Gyarados and fire a Hyper Beam at the player that hurt it.

Kirby is still way better in Brawl than he was in Melee at least.

Haly

Removing Kirby's back-throw suicide was not cool.

Now that I think about it, going from Melee > Brawl was like going from DOTA -> LoL. All the neat stuff players figured out to exploit the engine was taken out because of Anti-Fun™.

nintendo has a lot to prove with this game. i expect ggpo level netcode, and that's it. gg.

anything less and they shouldn't release it.

then we will never get Smash 4

We will sooner have good Melee netplay via Dolphin.

I don't want to see clone characters removed, but perhaps consolidated would be a smart move (especially since the roster is getting kinda big). Instead of having 'costumes', just treat them as "Alternatives" or "Stand-ins".

When you switch costumes, they could include an option to switch between "Palette swap" (plays the exact same way as the default character) and "Style swap" (adds minor gameplay changes). For example, for Mario's alt costume, the Doctor Mario costume could play like the Melee-era Dr. Mario (I think he was heavier, hit slightly harder and had bouncy pills), but only if you have "Style Swap" on. Otherwise, the pills float just like fireballs, etc.

This would open up lots of options; various suits for Samus that have different capabilities, different versions of Link, and lots and lots of the little winks and nudges towards Nintendo's history that Smash Bros. is known for.

I'm fine with Wolf and Falco being a Fox Alternative so long as you can switch him over to play like he does in Brawl. Of course, you could just have him play identical to Fox, just with different visuals, if that's what you want (it'd be easier to see who's playing who). Might make online interesting too.

Also, I seriously would love to see Mega Man (classic, of course) appear with a power-stealing ability ala Kirby. All of the Smash characters would be assigned a classic Mega Man boss weapon, (i.e. Bombs from Link, Fire from Mario, etc.) with the appropriate color scheme.... if only so Mega Man stealing Captain Falcon can result in Hard Knuckle...

K Rool, Little Mac and Ridley as characters (thats the ones that I really want, but logically I would love to see some crazy new ones, like Captain rainbow).

Take out snake and put Ray form Disaster.

4 different versions of each character, fuck all the different color shit. They can go so crazy making this it could be awesome and you can have different characters as Daisy and Pichu like this easily with out taking any slots.

More representation of Nintendo villians.

A Fantasmic type story with Nintendo villians vs Nintendo heroes (yeah, I know its typical but its better than the story we got in Brawl), no more final fantsy shit of the FFIV writer. That guy cant write for saving his life.

And nothing more.
Well I had an idea for the Little Mac stage, make the World Circuit ring were the ropes of the ring act as boucing walls, and every x minutes appears one boss of the game to say a famous quote and throw a few trademark moves. Of course Glass Joe can be punched. Also have Doc shouting quotes in the corner of what characters are doing "oh, that punch has to hurt" "he fights like a yo-yo" etc...
Yeah, I know some people dont like this kind of stages, but thats why they have final destination and its variations.
Fan service the game even more.

Also Goroh is a goddamn samurai, give it to Phoenix or Captain Rainbow.

Capcom?! I wouldn't say they are any better at balancing than Sakurai (besides MK being little g god) and his staff are. About half of each games cast are "competitive".

What I meant was, having a team dedicated to balancing for competitive play rather than actively working against the possibility of competition.

I mean, CAPCOM has some obvious biases (Sakura and Cammy are not allowed to be competitive) but otherwise the work they do is very reasonable.

great logic

it's not a logic thing. what about the 3ds version should i care about? certainly not the controls, the graphics, the screen size, or online play. so what's left? 3d? portability?

no thanks. they should make the wii u version their only priority. god help them if they try to synergize the two.

so your logic is that because you personally dont care about a game no effort should be put into it

okay

i hope uncharted 3 and infinite dont have effort put into them and are lazy hackjobs because i dont care

1. Ganondorf with Trident

+
Trident.png

Forget the argument that he should've been wielding the sword of sages, the trident is his true weapon. & for those who mained him worrying about losing the old style...

2. Black Shadow (F-Zero)
064.jpg

Given that Ganon's previous moveset was based off of Captain Falcon, its obvious a F-Zero villain should inherit it.

3. Phantom Zelda (Spirit Tracks)
521px-Phantom.pngelda

No more Links? How about another Zelda? At least there's no way they could make this 1 a clone
right?

4. Mii (Wii sports)
mii-collage.png

A true create--a-character mode wouldn't suit SSB, but using miis in a similar fashion would work because they're still miis & thus still Nintendo characters.

5. Little Mac (Punch Out!)
Little_Mac.jpg

Come on, they practically went our of their way to give him a viable final smash in the Wii game.

& now for the controversial pick,
6. Kevin Keene (Captain N, the Game Master)
cn_tev_sticker_captainn.jpg

Let me go over my reasons:
A. He would certainly fit the spot of WTF final character ala G&W & ROB
B. He's looooong overdue a reboot. Batman survived Adam West, Justice League survived the Super Friends, why can't this guy get a second chance?
C. It'd be interesting seeing him updated to more current hardware, using the Wii Zapper instead of NES Zapper or having a long range grab with the IR pointer.
D. Yes, Nintendo owns the rights to him not DiC.

7. Sami (Advance Wars)
AWDS_Sami.jpg

We probably shouldn't be adding women purely for the sake of more female fighters. Sami however is genuinely the best possible choice for AW. As an infantry specialist whose always depicted with weaponry, she's pretty much the only CO who looks like she's been in direct combat before. If Snake doesn't come back, Sami can inherit his moveset.

Third Party Picks
8. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
192px-Sora_%28Scan%29_KH3D.png

Well he's the star of 1 massive crossover franchise, he should fit right in another.

9. Mega Man
378px-MM10-MegaMan.png

And...

10. Simon Belmont
10212-SimonBelmont_super.gif

To complete the Captain N reunion.

I think what he's saying is that he doesn't want Smash WiiU to have to suffer so that they can get more or less the same game onto the 3DS, which I can easily see happening. It would suck to have a smaller roster just because they want both the WiiU and 3DS versions to have the exact same cast.

Basically he wants Smash 3DS to be a secondary goal, something more like a port than a game developed alongside the console version.

Yeah, I can totally see Sakurai doing this.

"It wouldn't be fair if the portable version had less than the console version. For that reason, some ideas had to be scrapped from the Wii U version."

He's going to be very disappointed, because the way Sakurai described it at E3 3DS version is like Poke'mon RBY & Wii U is like Poke'mon Stadium. He literally called it the stadium to show off the built-up characters. & really, what the heck can Wii U do for SSB that the 3DS can't? What kind of super awesome amazing stage design are you imagining because I can't think of anything beyond shinier graphics.

How large are 3DS carts? Brawl alone took up an 8GB dual layered DVD. Smash 4, presumably, will be on a 50GB disc.

B- fire Zapper
Side B- Super Dash
Up B- Super Jump
Down B- Create Tetris Block
