NHL February |OT| FIRE ALL THE THINGS

The only team that I would suspect gets some help from the officials for whatever reason is Carolina. It's incredible how consistently they've had far more PPs than PKs every single season, even across four different coaching systems and different rosters. Could just be some team philosophy that carries on each season, I dunno.

they just had a 5 minute segment on Detroit's typically great skating veterans taking uncharacteristic spills after they go down a goal.
How contrived/convincing was it? Pavel 'Lady Byng' Datsyuk does tend to take some very easy spills despite being such a great skater, though.

I forgot to ask this before, but I've noticed the Number 4 on opposite ends on the ice at the Scotiabank Place. What's up with that?

Glad to have been at the Joe for the game. This team has been really surprising lately with their ability to come back and win games. Earlier in the season, they would have quit if they didn't lead after the first.

I'm not an expert, and I really don't care that much, but every time I take a look at penalty summaries in Pens games (like tonight's) they've been favored. I don't know if it's always that way, but whenever I take a minute to look, that's how it is.

This has already been proven to be a false folk belief, and nothing more. The Pens are right in the middle of the pack when it comes to being penalized.

Honestly, I think it was just Lego hair Milbury being his controversial/emotional self. They never doubted Detroit's talent, but did have some damning evidence on Zetterberg from tonights game. Other than that, they showed a few quick clips of Detroit's recent comeback victories.

If you say so. A quick look at games in the past month doesn't back you up, but I don't follow the Pens too closely. I guess I'll take your word for it.

Ok finally back home! First off great game Flyer fans, guys gave me a few minor heart attacks during the game. This was my first time at game in like 10 years or so? So it's nice to to finally go to another Wings game (thanks to my gf for the early bday present). Here are some pictures and videos below:

Video of the final minute.

I will say one thing Bryz (or his equipment manager) got right this season are his pads.

Retro throwback with modern technology. Fucking awesome. I want.

Also that's now two home games where the Red Wings have worn their away jerseys, are they trying to replicate what road trip streaks are like or something?

White jersey's at home are the right thing to do, love seeing the different colors of other teams coming into the Joe.

Those pads are awesome. But I think they might be cursed since he got them specifically for the Winter Classic and was benched during the game.

Full Link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20122ALLSAAALL&sort=penaltyMinutes&viewName=penalties just in case anyone's wondering where to find it. Funny how Philly has twice the penalty minutes Phoenix has.

EDIT: Just saw the new thread title, I like it.
Was referring to this stat since it takes into account both PP and PK time.

Saying that Philly has so many more penalty minutes than Phoenix ignores the fact that they've also got the most PP time in the league. There are just a ton of penalties called during their games.

I think that still says something about refs' approach to Flyers games that is just as fucked up. It also ignores the fact that the Flyers are consistently in the highest penalized teams in the league despite whatever turnover the team has. I find it difficult to believe that anyone would argue that the Flyers' reputation doesn't affect how their games are called. You may argue that it all evens out. I'd disagree, but I wouldn't think you were bullshitting at that point.

It would be better for the NHL to adopt soccer/football's approach: let teams determine what their home colours are.

Wouldn't that create needless work for the teams when they travel? Having to bring two sets of uniforms and equipment on road trips doesn't sound like a good idea for the teams.

I also think it would add some confusion for casual fans.

It's even better than evening out. The Flyers average a full minute more on the PP per game than the team with the second most and they're 5th in the league in having more PP time than PK time.

I would kill for Philly's "reputation". The Canucks get about as many PK minutes, but far fewer PP minutes.

Some team in the league is going to end up with the most penalties per game (for both teams combined). It happens to be the Flyers. It could certainly be due to the officials expecting more penalties and therefore calling more, but it has only worked in their favour. More likely it's just that Philly plays a more physical game and teams respond in kind.

I like the whole 'home colours / whites away' thing. It means for the most part, that every arena (except Jobing.com) will have all the fans dressed in the same colour and not have every arena with a Whiteout.

OHH THE TAXES THE FINGERS THING MEANS THE TAXES

I still just see them falling early in the playoffs. Dunno why.

It's not like the Canucks will sweep them again this time. IIRC, the Canucks have had their fair share of trouble with the Blues this season (Soc?). In general though, they have enough vets with playoff experience to not buckle under the intensity. And you don't have Mason as goalie this time, you have Proven Playoff Performer Halak.

I agree with this, color jerseys look fantastic at home. I also think St Louis is going to go far in the playoffs, they're air tight defensively, have two fantastic goalies, and seem to have a team that has completely bought into Hitchcock's style that will work well in the playoffs.

You are correct.

The Blues have had the best record in the NHL since Hitchcock took over. 28-7-7. (Canucks have been 28-8-5). The best part about their success is that the Canucks very likely won't have to face them in the first round. Blues could end up winning the Central.

Whites should be home team colours, darks on the road. I have no idea why it was swapped around... years later and it still looks wrong to me.

Uh, darks at home IS the original way. They switched to whites at home for a while, but eventually they came to their senses and went back to darks at home.

Which is the right choice.

Yes!

I don't want whiteouts in every arena, and every team has a white jersey which makes them boring. The darks pop and I love seeing red everywhere in the Bell Centre.

Darks at home 4 lyfe!

What a disappointing weekend of hockey. Flyers played well against the wings but stupid turnovers and a goalie that cant make the big save did them in. It sucks cause their offense is great, but they turn the puck over at the worst possible times. Scheen looks fantastic though. I hope Bryz comes back soon, I am done with Bob for good, I dont want to see him anymore. Bryz sucks to, but I can at least delude myself into thinking that he might do something.

As CrazedArabMan said, its a lot better seeing all the colors of the opposing teams.

Plus, think of players like Kyle Wellwood. With all the eating he does, the team wouldn't have to waste a lot of time on the road doing laundry for dark jerseys because the mustard/gravy stains wouldn't show up nearly as much as they do on white jerseys.

Bryz has only given up 1 goal or less in 5 of his last 7 games so there is some hope there. Of course he gave up a combined 9 in the other 2 but lets just ignore that.

I didn't really watch the Leafs-Habs game on Saturday so I didn't properly suffer.

Subban is really easy to hate. What a douchebag trying to injure Kessel. And I understand Grabo slewfooted Pleks too so Grabo's also in the wrong.

That was a shitty night. Red_Man got really nasty.
