Ninja Gaiden Black still the best action game

I prefer Ninja Gaiden 2 to Black, but 100% see why someone would prefer Black. I adore both games.

The only character-action game that tops either is Bayonetta, in my book.

NGB is for people who like to use only 3 moves to beat the game because the developers couldn't be bothered with actual weapon and move balance.

When I see posts like this, I think of this for some reason:
[...]Have you ever watched people cracking sunflower seeds and eating them? The utterly mechanical manner in which they crack the seeds and shove them in their mouths, practically unconsciously, while staring into space with an entirely vacuous, cow-like expression? You wonder whether they even taste anything, and why they even bother eating them in the first place. That's exactly how these children play games. Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio, Far Cry -- everything bad, crap and boring. Do they even enjoy any games at all? No doubt if you ask them they'll reply with something along the lines of "THE HIDDEN ROOM BEHIND THE SECRET DOOR IN THE PENULTIMATE STAGE OF THE GOD MODE OF DMC3 WHICH YOU GET AFTER YOU CLEAR THE GAME THIRTEEN TIMES WITHOUT TOUCHING ANYTHING AND LOOKING AT THE SCREEN WAS PRETTY NEAT".

The bizarre combo video subculture that spawned from people wanting to turn action-adventure games with a diverse toolset ("combat system") into single player fighting games has done irreparable damage to the genre, really.

Bayonetta has zero camera issues.

Get better, other developers.

#TeamBayo

That's because the enemies don't do shit unless they're in the field of view.

I might be showing my "noob"ness though, since I never played Bayonetta on its hardest difficulty, so I do not know if that is true for all of the game.

NGB gives you the most motivation in an action game to learn your whole arsenal.
ROFLMAO!!!

Ninja plz

NGB has the most vanilla moves out of any action game in the top 5 list. You listed like 10 usable moves in the game (almost 2 per weapon) where as every weapon has like 80-90% moves that are complete trash especially all those "combo strings". You can write any book you want on the game... it just won't include those garbage moves that have no place in a game that rewards efficiency over style.

Take that foolish talk to MN and see if your shit don't get wrecked.
Beat the game on MN using minimal moves like you are supposed to. I wouldn't be talking about this stuff if I hadn't although it's been a while since I played NGB.

I honestly feel that move and weapon "balance" is incredibly overrated in a single player action game.
Fun is relative, balance is not. I prefer an action game with solid move/weapon balance over another which doesn't have it. And it's not like the DMC games lack in fun in terms of their weapons... I mean where else can you find weapons like Pandorra, Lucifer and Nevan?

The same could be said about DMC. There are only the moves that start the combo. The rest is filler.
This post is full of fail. Moves like Stinger and Round Trip are filler now?

Did you never play above Normal? Enemies start breaking Flying Swallow and punish you for that.

Now, granted, you have a point with Izuna Drop spamming but really your choice to do that instead of varying your moves.

Bayonetta's camera is not without flaws.

It's not really apparent outside of the Jeanne fights where both characters are walking on different planes from each other.

but they're there

I say this with Bayonetta being my favorite action game

RE: NG2.

I think a properly balanced NG2 would of bee the perfect counterpoint to NG2. Its clear that that game was designed for speed and efficient kills, rather than NGB's rock, paper scissors combat. I personally like it more than Black, although I know black is a much better game.

As for GOW, I think the series gets too much hate. Its not an action game, its an adventure one. It does what it aims to do very very very well. Im looking forward to Ascension. It could easily rival darksiders 2 in the combat department with just a hint more care.

This thread is like a Gamefaqs thread from 8 years ago. I am just waiting for someone to bring up dial a combos into this thread.

Lol

I haven't seen the DIAL A COMBO criticism in a while

Just launch an enemy and press buttons

Right alongside DMC3 dumb AI and boring enemies

And then LHK comes in with this long ass post nobody reads

Just like old times

Preach it!

Ninja Gaiden 2 was also a really good game, but it was rushed and does show somewhat. Bayonetta is better than NG2, but not as good as NG(B). Ninja Gaiden Sigma is ok, Sigma Plus is an ok version of Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Sigma 2 is garbage, haven't played any of the Ninja Gaiden 3, and I'm not interested in Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma (as I don't want to play what seems to be a technologically crippled version of a game that I already don't like).

The Devil May Cry's that I've played (all except 2) are fine action games I play through once and then don't touch ever again. Same with the God of War games.

Try Enslaved. It's got one of the deepest, most intricate combat systems in the genre. There are some really impressive videos out there with some insane combos. The only downside is that the platforming can be very, very tricky at times.

not sure if srs.

maybe you could post a link to a combo vid?

The first video on youtube was this

I haven't put enough time into a lot of the other top tier action games, but Ninja Gaiden Black is one of my favorite games ever, so much excellent content. When I first played against a doppleganger on Hard I lost my mind, such an amazing fight. The Dabilahro is one of my favorite swords in any game, it hits so hard and the combos are brutal.

I need to play more Bayonetta, but I still prefer the more defensive, methodical style of NGB to combo heavy, offensive Action games like Bayo and DMC. I played a good bit of NG2, and the more faster paced and offensive gameplay was thrilling at first, but the overall design and game performance fell apart pretty quick. I quit when I had to fight two Armadillos at once, it was awful, and the combat doesn't have the lasting appeal of NGB.

It's too bad that they shit on it with Sigma remakes. I think it plays pretty well on 360, but I'm not sure if it is as smooth at is on the original Xbox.

God of War is sitting in the chair next to me just shaking his head.

That's not the game shaking its head, that's Kratos crushing its neck with both his hands as the player is forced to mash [] and O alternatively over and over to simulate the action of extreme strangulation while the visuals depict how its eyes are exploding out of their sockets from the pressure. :puke

What are these so called "trash moves?" because if we are calling out useless combo strings, bayonetta is by far the worst offender.

and explain why you are supposed to complete MN with "minimal moves" Even if you are purely playing for karma score, there are different moves that are more useful on different fiends/Bosses

Again everything you have said is much more appropriately applied to NG2 than black, Where a playthrough is literally spam izuna drop, counter attack and onlanding UT

Huh? What are beat 'em ups/character action games (or whatever genre NG, DMC, etc. are) if not the single-player equivalent of fighting games?

That mechanic is used less and less the higher you pump the difficulty. And even then the camera isn't really that close anyway so, 9 times out of 10 all the enemies will be visible unless the camera zooms during torture attacks.

Bayonetta's camera is not without flaws.

It's not really apparent outside of the Jeanne fights where both characters are walking on different planes from each other.

I've put tons of hours into the game and have never had a camera issue in combat. It's the best free camera system I've used in these action games.

Combo focused combat almost killed this genre for me.

I dont get any satisfaction pulling off big combos. Action games should be about reflex, memorizing enemy patterns, knowing when to attack, prioritizing targets over others, relentless AI that is not just combo fodder etc...

More moves doesnt automatically means the game is better.

The only top-tier action games I've played are the Clover / Platinum ones, and DMC1 is one of my favorite games of all time, but Ninja Gaiden Black appeals to me way more than DMC3 even though I don't have a Xbox or 360. One day I really want to play it.

It's more to do with perspective and level design than anything.(Bayonetta has a wide perspective and most combat takes place in wide open environments)

Enemies will attack offscreen with only certain moves I think even on higher difficulties.

Ninja Gaiden camera tilts to let you know when an off screen enemy is going to attack. It's a brilliant touch that no other game has been smart enough to copy.

DMC is swag as fuck, makes the best combo videos, but will still destroy a lot of gamers.
All true, but compared to Black at the highest difficulty the series is a breeze. Great games for sure though. It's incredible how well the original DMC holds up for something that was a byproduct of Resident Evil.

I agree with the thread title. Easily one of the best games ever, period.

God of War is sitting in the chair next to me just shaking his head.

That's a great joke. I'll show up to your stand up session if the rest of the material is this good.

I don't know why you'd want to play an action game where you have to stand still and hold a guard button sometimes. Blech. A great action game is always in motion. Bayonetta's dodge. Rising's parrying. Viewtiful Joe's hops and ducks. God Hand's bobing and weaving. That's how you defend in a great action game.

So have I

Camera gets really weird in the corners of Jeanne encounters when transitioning from floor to wall perspective.

I think most people don't notice it though because there's not really alot going on in her fights to where you'd be mad about it.

Ninja Gaiden Flying Swallow and Ninja Gaiden Flying Swallow Black are pretty awesome games, just a bit too uneven when it comes to the OP Flying Swallow.

Huh? What are beat 'em ups/character action games (or whatever genre NG, DMC, etc. are) if not the single-player equivalent of fighting games?

They are action games. Fighting games also have single player story modes, and there are also multiplayer action games. Anarchy Reigns and Spikeout are not fighting games, they're multiplayer action games. Trying to pigeonhole everything into a "fighting" genre is silly and does disservice to the range of players who enjoy them.

Sounds like you're playing it wrong. The best defense in Ninja Gaiden is offense.

A breeze? Hardly. DMD mode in DMC1 and DMC3 are nothing to sneeze at.
