Ninja Gaiden Black still the best action game

Combo focused combat almost killed this genre for me.

I dont get any satisfaction pulling off big combos. Action games should be about reflex, memorizing enemy patterns, knowing when to attack, prioritizing targets over others, relentless AI that is not just combo fodder etc...

More moves doesnt automatically means the game is better.

You sound like a Metal Gear Rising type of person.

Come this way, I've got something you need to see.

So have I

Camera gets really weird in the corners of Jeanne encounters when transitioning from floor to wall perspective.

I think most people don't notice it though because there's not really alot going on in her fights to where you'd be mad about it.

Ehh, I've never had an issue with the floor/wall transitions, nothing that I even felt harmed the experience anyway. I just jump to whatever surface Jeanne is on and the camera adjusts.

I don't know why you'd want to play an action game where you have to stand still and hold a guard button sometimes. Blech. A great action game is always in motion. Bayonetta's dodge. Rising's parrying. Viewtiful Joe's hops and ducks. That's how you defend in a great action game.
90% of the encounters in ng are rolling around and being offensive after you have gotten good at the game

almost every enemy has a guard breaking move. If you are standing and holding guard in NG you will die very quickly, especially on the higher difficulties.

The guard is really only to give you a brief respite while you think of your next attack.

Once you get good at the game you only press guard to do the roll, jump, roll combo which is still one of the fastest ways to get around in a action game, even compared to bayo and DMC.

you should play Ninja Gaiden 2.

If you're doing anything other than occasionally tapping block in NG, you're playing it wrong.

A breeze? Hardly. DMD mode in DMC1 and DMC3 are nothing to sneeze at.
I don't remember it well from the original DMC, but I found DMC3 easy front to back, but I played it almost immediately after finishing Ninja Gaiden.

NG2 is harder, but NGB's Master Ninja is not that much harder than DMC3's DMD... especially if you forego the New Game Plus.

It's been a while, but I've beaten NG, NGB, and NGII on MNM.

does LHK also have to defend his 10/10 for DMC2?

What the...

I'll put my vote up for Vanquish.

Indeed. If we are including shooters, Vanquish is pretty damn spectacular.

I'll definitely try Rising. I played the demo and I liked it.

Rising is great, but it really does feel like a different kind of action game once you get it your hands on it. You can tell with something like Bayonetta that it was directed towards the DMC/NG style. Rising just feels kinda like it's own thing after you jump in.

I think NGB is tied with DMC1. Both games were legitimately challenging, unique, and beautiful, and both series went straight downhill from there. Platinum is overrated IMO, especially MGR. By far the worst camera system of any action game I've played. It was especially brutal the second time around, since the hype wore off.

I think DMC3 just seemed easier to me because I had just finished Ninja Gaiden, and had my skill level up when I went into it.

I enjoy Bayonetta and what I've played of Rising, but the combat system in those games just doesn't flow as smoothly as I'd like. Compared to Ninja Gaiden and DMC, Platinum's games just feel slow and slightly unresponsive. But that's just me.

Dear lord:

DMC2 contains one of the best sword/gun-play I have ever seen.

I'd put DMC3SE and Bayo slighty above but the holy trinity is so good it's like trying to justify which is better between pumpkin, apple, and cherry pie.

Bayonetta is so buttery I can cook the disc. I have NO idea how you formed this opinion. Please elaborate.

NGB is the best. Not only is the combat great, but it's the overall game design which really makes the game. Great encounter design, varied stages, lots of variety in enemy setups, great bosses of varying sizes and concepts. It's just such a packed game, with pretty much every element polished and fun for players of all skill levels. Great weapons too.

There have been a number of great action games since then, sure, but NGB remains THE best.

I'd agree if the bosses seemed to actually have patterns. Thats the only thing I didnt like about NGB, the bosses attacks seemed to be somewhat random. Either that or I just need to get better at recognizing them.

I think Bayo tops NGB, or they're tied.

I remember some stages of NGB being a chore to get through - the ghost fish infested labyrinth (post-Doku 1, I think), and the water levels (spear gun).

Bayo had its questionable levels like the bike and missile levels, but as long as they dragged, they were still more fun than those levels I mentioned in NGB.

I think the reason the are a holy trinity is that they compliment each other so well. As far as im concerned you cannot call yourself a fan of the genre till you play all three.

I don't Rising fits in that definition although I haven't played much of it yet. Its still one of the best games of the past few years at least.

He also thinks DmC is the best action game this generation.

And that the GOW series is better than DMC. I think you can safely disregard his opinion.

Ninja Gaiden Black is not the best action game. However, it is one of the best. Everything about it is god-tier, yet it just can't topple Bayonetta because of its sheer amount of content, details, and polish. IMO Bayonetta is as close to perfect as an action game has gotten yet. Though, NGB rivals Bayonetta on pretty much every aspect except the flexibility to you have with your character. NGB had near perfect controls, but Bayonetta was just a cut above it. Really impressive for an original Xbox game.

It saddens me that Itagaki was not able to fully expand upon what he established with NGB.

Rising is incredibly fun but I agree with the premise that you simply don't have the perfect degree of control with Raiden that you do with the holy trinity protagonists.

Not sure how to explain it. I don't like the way one move transitions into the next. Maybe it's because there are more frames of animation, but I always feel like the game is too far behind my input.

Why are you making things up?

I said GoW is more popular than DMC, which is a fact. Don't know where you got that other crap, but I like Bayo, NGII, DMC4 and GoW3 better than DmC.

You mean the camera system that there's nothing wrong with?

That's funny, because I think the same thing. The camera is only bad when you are trying some plataforming and climbing ladders. Besides that (combat-wise), the camera never failed me.

I have beaten this game on the 360 countless times. Never gets old.

Someday I will do my Hard run. :( And beat all the missions. There is always a new gaming coming up, so I get demotivated to play seriously.

just play NGB again

I laughed hard.

But yeah, you are right.
