Okay... Nintendo has posted losses, now - how many hours do we have to wait for an awesome surprise Nintendo game announcement!?

I'm pretty sure Nintendo did something like that for damage control last time too!

They would have to buy the rights to and release a sequel to God Hand to offset this level of bad news.

... I just want a sequel to God Hand, really. But I would settle for a new Kirby or Zelda game, I suppose.

They changed their year end Net income forecast from a 20 billion yen profit down to a 20 billion yen loss. Operating Income forecast was lowered down to 1 billion yen and the forecast three months ago was for 35 billion yen.

Not been a good last three months.

edit- beaten with the actual chart.

So, 3DS has sold more units than the DS did in its first 3 quarters. DS had a holiday period in there, but wasn't coming off the back of brand-hype built by a 149 million unit seller, so it looks less healthy. Still, not bad, especially the price-drop related sales pick up after a very low second quarter.

Between Mario Kart, M3D Land and Monster Hunter they should be able to pick up this Christmas. Sonic and Inazuma should help software sales, too.

Glad to hear the losses weren't quite as huge as predicted.

...Also, the 3DS sold MORE units in the same length of time than the DS at that stage in its life, even without the critical October-December block. Why is it a doomed failure of a system again?

Nintendo is doomed unless they move to the future of gaming: iOS.

DS didn't have the brand recognition of a 149 million unit seller behind it. That being said, the 3DS is certainly not as unhealthy as it is made out to be, but it's definitely doing less well than even Nintendo expected, especially at first.

I didn't have a clue how bad the overall sales really were till that chart. August was a good move on their behalf, and well for everyone really.

Winter will be interesting.

Heh, DS is really going down after 3DS price cut.
So much that they almost cut half of their DS forecast.
They cut also 3DS software forecast, due to its lower than expected performance in Q2.

And didn't the DS then start going gangbusters about a year or so after release, when titles started coming out that really took advantage of the touch and the new things it offered? I don't see 3DS being able to do that to that level because it's nothing "new" as such. Just 3D which doesn't really add a lot to what you can do gameplay-wise.

Therefore I expect the figures to look way out of whack in the old DS' favour next year. Hope not, but I don't have much hope.

And notice that their forecast for 3DS hardware is staying the same. Sad thing for us owners is that the software sales forecast has dropped about 20% :(

did DS slash its price by an unprecedented amount to do it?

anyway seems like 107B loss with 95B due to Foreign exchange effects?

I know, but I find it funny and strange how people are so quick to conflate the 3DS failing to meet (admittedly high) expectations with it being an abject failure. Good old fashioned internet hyperbole, I guess.

Reason for variance

Sales of "Nintendo DS" hardware and "Nintendo 3DS" software were weaker than expected. In addition, yen appreciation was beyond expectation level and the exchange losses totaled 52.4 billion yen. These are the main factors of the variance.
What software were they expecting to sell? >_>

hopefully this results into more game announcements and localizations.
The yen situation actually gives them less incentive to localize, in a sense. :\

No, and you're absolutely right that the 3DS had a rocky start because of it. Still, not nearly the disaster some make it out be be.

still aiming for 16m 3DS's in 2011/12

with 3.07m sold... so... expecting 13m between now and March but predicting a reduction in software sales ?

#burnnoticeintrowhistle

FY 2011/12 Forecast (Unit:Million)

Code:
NDS Wii 3DS

Hardware Sales 6.0 12.0 16.0

Software Sales 62.0 100.0 50.0
Original Forecast (Unit:Million)

Code:
NDS Wii 3DS

Hardware Sales 11.0 13.0 16.0

Software Sales 67.0 120.0 62.0
so - from this i guess they expect the attractively priced 3DS to replace the NDS in sales and have adjusted accordingly?

Tomorrow, we'll see if they announce something else.
Because they already announced an impressive load of software, both first party and third party.
Maybe, bundles for America, let's see.

it's a bit strange.

First they predicted 156.4m income for fy 2012, and now it is exactly that amount of loss? is it correct or a mistype?
nvm, it actually makes sense. They sustained 273m more loss than what they expected, and reducing that from 154 will amount to -119 loss, and a bit further it'll be like -154 loss. (strange they are exactly the same numbers though!)

So, they are going to barely make even this fy if their forecasts don't change much like it did this time.

I believe the previous forecasts included sales of 3DS at $250, and also they expected DS to sell as well.

Now not only DS doesn't sell due to the high price, but 3DS is selling at a much lower profit margin, if any.
