Hard to say. Aside from the controls being less fluid the remake is pretty much superior in every way, but at the same time there are a lot of little things that you wouldn't notice/appreciate as much without playing the original game. I'd say for anyone who hasn't played Mario 64 the N64 version is the way to go, but anyone who has and wants to replay it should check out the DS version.

I'd say for anyone who hasn't played Mario 64 the N64 version is the way to go, but anyone who has and wants to replay it should check out the DS version.
I think "bad" is way overstating the case. The lack of analog vs. digital movement hardly ever was an issue, and the few times it was, I just buckled down and used the touchscreen. 80-90% of the game controls very well with the D-pad instead of the touchscreen.
(Still have the thumb attachment from the OG DS to simulate stick control. :lol)

I played it using touchscreen controls and it was a bit awkward at first but then I got the hang of it and loved it. I'm a righty so I would hold the DS on my knee using the right hand with the thumb on the button and use the stylus with my left hand. It probably took me a couple of hours to get comfortable. Very much loved the DS version.

Interestingly, it was mentioned that if Gurumin 3D does well on the eShop, they'll offer the Japanese audio as DLC (no word on if it'd be free or paid).
I'm debating if I want to try the game again. I played it on PSP as a teen (so like maybe 8 years ago), but it was so........"okay" that I don't remember much. Maybe if it goes on sale for $10 or so. Probably didn't help some stuff like attacking to the beat of the music was removed in the PSP version, which the eShop version is based on.

From what I played of it on Vita (probably about 1/4th or so) it was really reminiscent of Solatorobo - charming and quirky, but really shallow in the gameplay department. Unlike that game though I actually liked the art style and find the simple gameplay to be mildly relaxing instead of just monotonous, so I'm eager to actually finish it on 3DS.
Oh yeah, I wouldn't call it a "bad" game by any means, but I think it just didn't stand out compared to all the other games I was playing around the time. I THINK I finished it, but again, it was so average that I honestly can't remember much. Which is a shame because I remember seeing it and having a factor in wanting a PSP since I figured it was up my alley.
I think the only other thing I recall about it was it kind of chugged a bit on PSP, & hearing that this is based on that version, I don't think it'll run much better even on New 3DS (though making use of the nub is a nice addition). So when I finished Mario 64 on the VC a few months ago, or was it like a year ago? I can't remember. Anyway, when I finished it, got all 120 stars, I said to myself "Good. Now I dont have to touch Mario 64 again for another 10 years. Unless the DS version comes out on the VC, then I'll just have to 100% that one too."
So here it is. It's out now. I bought it. I have 30 stars now. I'm stuck.
However, the controls and tightness are completely lost in this version. The lack of precision with the control stick is a downer. The inability to move the camera with the stick too sucks. You have to use the tiny buttons on the touch screen. And you can't even remap any controls so I keep trying to crouch or long jump with the menu button. And since you have to run manually (Couldn't they make an exception where the stick will walk normally when less than halfway tilted and act as if the run button is pressed when all the way tilted? It's not that hard! And it wouldn't need any recoding of the game.) it's hard to also use Yoshi's tongue move. And I keep forgetting which button is for punching with Mario. Oh, and that stupid feature where the character keeps walking in one direction even after I switch directions and walks off cliffs and shit when I don't want him to.
This is gonna be more frustrating than the 64 version was which had a tiny delay that was enough to throw me and my 20 year old muscle memory off.

Other than that, I'm having fun. I don't remember a lot from this version. So there's a lot to discover again. All the changes are nice to see and it makes it feel like a different game in many ways. But those quirks really can be problems sometimes.
After I finish this, I might buy Mario Kart DS.

For the Capcom sale, which 3DS Monster Hunter game would be best for someone who's never played one, 3 or 4? Is 4 worth the extra 10 bucks?
