Nintendo Downloads - June 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

I know this sounds kind of random, but what is up with Amazon's price gouging on Nintendo Points? They're selling a 2,000 point card for 23 dollars! Even Gamestop is selling them for the proper $20.00.

I honestly don't know why they even bothered putting that up. It's obvious that they have zero interest in putting games on it. Oh sure plenty of stuff out and on the way in Japan but none of that matters. Japan's up to 18 games now and we're still screwing around with what? 4?

And word has gotten out that 8-4 has already localized all those that appeared on that long list for Japan. I mean, somebody has already paid for all the new menus to be translated, for crying out loud. NoA needs to open the faucet a little more.

Just dl Mario VS DK. There are some new parts. The most important is sharing levels with OUT friend codes!

You can search for a random level, top rated, newest, template, or friends.

:O :O :D

You also apparantly cant control mini mario after activating him. Which is also new.

Maybe I'll just stick to visiting these threads once a month and trick my mind into thinking: "four games a month? That's pretty good!" instead of "One game a week? That's bullshit!"
I've got little time and too many games as it is. I usually check once in awhile to see what's available just as you say and I'm always pleasantly surprised by how much I could purchase.

Srsly. 2 and a half years and we still don't have this classic... I can't get the awesome music out of my head!

So a good amount of different single player content then for Mario vs DK?
Yea. 4 rooms each with 8 levels each.

All of the levels are different because of the new "Can't stop Minis" feature. (Which makes it alot more interestig)

Swords and Soldiers has been really fun so far, and the amount of modes available for a downloadable game (for WiiWare to boot) are pretty surprising.

I've never been one to be too into the RTS-scene, but it's takes on the genre like this and Pikmin that have always interested me. The UI is really well done, making snap decisions very easy to pull off.

Some may be put off by the lack of any direct control of your attacking units. In the bit I've played so far, there's no way to stop them from advancing. You just birth them onto the battlefield, and they fight. But the low cost of spawning new recruits makes this less than a hassle.

Very cute and charming game. Hell, the developers logo is more creative than some full games.

140 This includes your and others levels.

Thats right. 140 ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY LEVELS!

Oh and you can download levels from others without friend codes. :D

Edit: You can only upload 20 levels at a time tho. Which is still alot better than before.

Updated the OP and cleaned up the ratings lists a bit. Any feedback would be great!

I think if you bolded the new releases each week it would be easier to glance at whats new. That's just personal preference though. :lol

Other than that, still an awesome thread. Much easier to find what's new compared to the old one. :D

i agree with using the boldface.

So how did you guys like The AFter Years? Was it really 800 points for one chapter of the cellphone game or was it at least a couple chapters combined?

From what I've read, the first, 800-point download is a few of the cellphone game's chapters combined, but I can't say if that's true or not because I've never played the cellphone version.

I *have* played through the first chapter/download of the WiiWare version, though, and it took me about 5 or 6 hours. Haven't played through the challenge dungeon for Ceodore yet, though, so I imagine that will add a few hours more. Keep in mind, though, that I like grinding - the chapter probably could be finished in 3-4 hours if you go right through.

Regardless, I've found the game to be well worth the points so far. I think it comes down to how you feel about FF games, and the SNES FF games in particular. Really, if you liked/loved FF IV, you can't go wrong with The After Years...

Are there any SuperFX chip games on the service yet?
There aren't any DSP games on the service yet either, guess that means Super Mario Kart is never coming! Oh that's right, it's coming out tomorrow in Japan.
Captain N said:
Mario RPG used it, right? I know it at least used some sort of chip not found in other games.
That used a different chipset (SA-1)

Your name is fitting. It's just worth noting whether any are available yet or not. When one gets announced, we'll know that they've completed their software implementation of that chip.

If they did the work to emulate other chipsets, it seems reasonable to assume that they'll eventually get around to adding SuperFX support, doesn't it? Then again, this IS Nintendo that we're talking about.

They'll add it at some point. Everyone who's been around VC notices that they tend to get most of the non-chipped games out first then went to work on getting emulation for the rest.

ESRB updates:

Fantasy Zone II

Platform: Wii

Rating: Everyone

Content descriptors: Mild Cartoon Violence

Rating summary: "This is an arcade-style shooter in which players control a small spacecraft through a variety of brightly-colored, whimsical levels. Players shoot tiny laser beams at an assortment of bouncing blobs, flying snowmen, and space creatures that dispense coins when defeated. Players can use the coins to buy a variety of power-ups (e.g., bombs, wide beams, and jet engines) to upgrade their ship."

The Revenge of Shinobi

Platform: Wii

Rating: Everyone 10+

Content descriptors: Fantasy Violence

Rating summary: "This is an arcade-style action game in which players control a ninja who fights to exact revenge on members of a criminal organization. Players traverse through various platform environments (e.g., Japanese forests, an airship, and urban landscapes) and mostly throw shurikens (i.e., ninja stars) at enemies, resulting in a flashing red burst. Players can also attack enemies and bosses by slashing them with a katana sword or performing special moves (i.e., ninja magic). Some enemies can fire machineguns or use flamethrowers to defeat the player. "

So I'm guessing they did something regarding the copyrights?

yeah call me when a decent SNES library is on the service other than that i'm done with it.

Fixed this. Their treatment of the SNES is disgraceful. It's particularly sickening when they release the inferior Genesis version of a game. I'm not knocking the Genesis; it has a great library. But give us the better version when there's a choice.

So upgrading to a DSi this week. the new Mario vs Dk mini worth being the first purchase with the free points or what would you reccomend?

Which game?

Earthworm Jim and Clayfighters.

add Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure to that list as well.

Um it's common knowledge that Earthworm Jim Genesis shits all over the SNES version.

Yes, it is.

Genesis owners are always well versed in which games are better on their system. Luckily for them you can count them on one hand. :D

Hopefully Sword & Soldier will get the same attention like World of Goo and Bit.Trip.Beat did.
Wiiware games are unlike PSN/XBLA games. Those games have huge amount of marketing behind them and game sites like 1UP/Gamespot help advertise them a lot. But Wiiware only rely on word of mouth.

Someone should make a thread for S&S.

Yes. It's a great package for 800 points. Also grab Paper Airplane. Then buy some points and get Picto Bits and Mighty Flip Champs.

I wanted to buy Bubble Bobble Plus, but my younger brother insisted on Swords & Soldiers. Pretty good game once you get into it.

I was planning on picking up Mario vs. Donkey Kong March of the Minis Again!, but I'm trying to save more. I'll buy it eventually, but it seems like I'm buying more games than playing them! This game, though, seems like the best on the service so far. DSiWare. <3

As for Yoshi's Island, I imagine it will coincide with the release of either NSMB Wii or SMG2.

Just played some MvsDK.

Never played this game before either and love it.
Who was making the NES levels?
Let's swap friend codes.

I like how downloading a level is near instant though loading a list of DLC levels takes a bit.
There's a lot on there now, and Nintendo has 5 of their own.

Going through the list of games that got Genesis and SNES ports I can honestly say they're all worthless. Okay maybe an argument could be made for Rock & Roll Racing but the last time I played that was over a decade ago so I doubt it holds up.

At least when Genesis VC is sucking I can just fill in the blanks myself cause Genesis games(and systems) are cheap as hell. SNES? Not so much.

Beaten, but there you are.

Hardly. The SNES version (as with many games) had considerably nicer graphics and sound, particularly due to the color palette. The Genesis version had an extra level and some sound samples that were left out of the SNES version.

I don't think "shits all over" is quite the right phrase. Take a wild guess which of these is which. Here's a hint: the dithered-to-hell crappy one is the "superior" Genesis version.

EWJ.jpg

A case can be made for any version of any game, of course. In the case of SNES/Genesis cross-platform games, I don't see why they don't just put up both and let people buy the one they're nostalgic for. They didn't have any problem putting up Street Fighter II (SNES), Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES), and Street Fighter II Champion Edition (GEN) even though they're very similar--hardly worth double- or triple-dipping on for most people, anyway.

But aside from all that, it's sad that the SNES, which is one of the best supported consoles in history with a huge, high quality game library, has so few games available on VC. Its lineup is only about half the size of my own SNES collection. Basically, it all boils down to the VC having extremely poor support. One game a week spread across, what, 9 systems now, is pathetic.
