Looks like my expectations were exactly on the dot, though Nintendo certainly did the bare minimum to clear the bar of what I said I'd be happy to hear and disappointed not to hear (one of the following: AC, Metroid, Platinum, Retro).
To be honest, though, this was a decently strong presentation, especially given its abbreviated running time.
- After seeing that English voices and localized text are in, I've swung all the way from extreme doubt that Xenoblade 2 will make 2017 to high confidence that it will. Placing Mario in October (rather than the usual late November slot Nintendo likes so much) clears plenty of room for it.
- Odyssey's core ability is exceptionally promising. Love that Pauline is back; love the song.
- Rocket League has been one of the top third-party requests for the Switch ever since it was announced. This was one of the biggest ports they could have landed (outside of games like Overwatch that clearly weren't going to happen).
- I felt that first-party side-scrollers were conspicuously missing from the Switch, especially as 2D Mario was unlikely to hit anytime soon. So Kirby was nice to have—but a second Good-Feel Yoshi (I assume it's theirs) was the best plausible item to fill this slot. This is definitely at the top of my shopping list for 2018 (seeing as how Prime 4 remains undated).
- Given how nothing was shown of Prime 4—this reminds me of the way SMTxFE (later Tokyo Mirage Sessions) was teased—I doubt we'll even hear about it again until E3 2018. This now joins main-line Pokémon and main-line FE in an unusually large category of minimal reassurances from Nintendo that something indeterminate exists.
